I know Russia has certain stakes in Syria, and i know that the Russians would rather not see U.N soldiers marching around in their backdoor, but the humanitarian crisis there cannot continue, people die there everyday, i think therefore that Russia should take its responsibility in restoring the order in Syria. I am not so fond of Assad, he's a liar, and i see no reason why the Russians couldn't replace him with someone better.
They would have to find someone acceptable to other parties as well as loyal to Moscow . Not easy to find , and over the long haul Assad has been good to Russia . And vice versa . Probably Putin and Lavrov are waiting to get something extra ----- not in the public domain . Could be about Georgia , Finland , Ukraine , Estonia or Abhazia .And that's without giving it thought .
Theres no doubt that Assads a dictator like Kaddafi, Mubarak etc. And i see no reason why Russia should stand for Assad as well. There are many reasons for fighting against Assads regime, but not only progressive democrats and peace lovers fight against Assad. I think it's far simpler than that, Russia has a market for selling weapons, and it doesn't want to lose it. If we "make peace" in Syria the entire country drops into chaos and can't buy weapons.
