I love going to see a new movie in a theatre, on the big screen, but since I go almost every week, I sometime wonder what to pick.

In the last few weeks, my husband and I have seen 3 movies, very different one from the other, but we enjoyed everyone of them for different reasons.

I thought it would be helpful to get individual ratings from people here, in PF, and the reason why they give that rating to the movies they choose.

Well, I'll start: Today, I went to see "12 years a slave." Both my husband and I felt it was an excellent movie in terms of acting and story line, but very hard to watch, and (since we are both White), a little uncomfortable because of the subject matter.

I came out of the movie (which, by the way, was mostly attended by Black people, including Black families with teenage kids) feeling a little embarrassed and depressed by the renewed realization of how evil mankind can be, how men can treat other human being worse than they would animals (today, a person would be arrested for cruelty to animal if he/she treated a dog or a cat the way slaves were treated!), and MOST OF ALL, how too many of those slave owners related to the SCRIPTURES as supportive evidence that they had every right to treat people that way. . .because they were their "property."

This opened (again) an old can of worms. . .how can ANYONE trust the scripture as a guide, if one can so easily "manipulate' the scriptures to say whatever suits their own "economic" need?

Do you go by yourself, or with company?

I don't go to theaters very often, because unless I had company, I'd feel awkward going alone

My husband wanted to see that movie, but I wasn't sure I would like it. Can you tell a little more what you liked about it? I would like to know if I should go see it, or if I should ask my husband to go on his own.

I think it's about a kid designated as "savior of the future world," right?
I'd like to know more if you don't mind.

I usually go with my husband alone, but sometimes with a couple of friends. My husband and I have very different taste in movies, but lately we have agreed on a few (including "Gravity") and LOVED a very entertaining "Last Vegas."

"Last Vegas" was a real winner for both of us. The cast was GREAT (Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline, Michael Douglas, and Robert de Niro), and it was refreshing to see them play a role that matched their age for once (especially Michael Douglas, who tends to play the playboy seducing 25 year old beauties in spite of his age!).

P.S. . . .it helps to be both eligible for the "senior rate!"

I read the book and wanted to see the movie. They did a great job of portraying the book but of course it had to be shortened for the screen so it is mostly about Ender and not his siblings. Almost the whole movie is about Ender's training in space, the mind games, his genius, his antagonists. They did a great job of portraying the training facility. The training is for a final fight against an alien race that attacked and came close to winning. There is a great twist at the end and I don't think you will be disappointed. I knew the ending and still liked it.

Loved Thor and Enders Game. Looking forward to "Alone"- the Robert Redford film.

Also saw Gravity in 3D on Imax. After all of the blather and advertising, I thought it was really good. It is almost like a string of cliffhangers strung together in one movie. It will at times keep you on the edge of your seat. The 3D is OK but there is one scene where her tear floats out into the audience that had me spellbound.

Thanks. . .I might actually go see it with my husband, instead of letting him go by himself!

I get headaches with 3D movies, so we went to see it in a regular showing. I liked it a lot, although I am not a fan of "science fiction" and "space travel!" I thought that the suspense was great, and it did keep me at the edge of my seat for the whole time.
I though Sandra Bullock did a great job, but that the end was a little messy. . . or maybe preparing us for a sequel?

I saw 12 Years a Slave last Sunday. The acting was phenomenal. I thought it was a masterpiece. It was so gripping and emotional that I was exhausted when I left the theatre. I thought Captain Philips was my choice for Best Picture, but now it's 12 Years a Slave.

Never heard of "Alone," but I really like Robert Redford. What is it about?

Also, is anyone planning on seeing the second installment of "the Hunger games" (Catching Fire)? I read all three books, and I like the first movie, but it wasn't as good as the book. So I am a little afraid to be disappointed with "Catching Fire." It's coming out in my area next Friday.

"All is Lost". I saw it. Robert Rebford is alone on a sailboat in the Indian Ocean when a cargo container punches a whole in the hull. It's goes downhill from there. Good movie. It's good to see Robert Redford in top form after all these years.

You know, I agree! I saws Captain Phillips last week, and liked it a lot. And, as usual, Tom Hanks was amazing in the role!

But I think that "12 years a slave" has more meaning and is a more important, more significant movie. One of those I will remember and watch again and again, every couple of years (one of those "for ever" movies is "The Green Mile," in my opinion).

I was introduced to science fiction by my sister. I did not start reading much of anything until I was sixteen when I went on a trip with a friends family to Wisconsin and lost my glasses the first day. I spent the rest of vacation reading (I am nearsighted) of, of all things, Nancy Drew Mysteries. Well, you start out easy and ease into harder reading. I went back and asked my sister to suggest something. She had quite a collection of science fiction and started me on writers like Heinlein. What I liked about science fiction were the possibilities. It is a genre that can explore every aspect of social experimentation outside of rigid social mores.

One book I read, and I can't even remember what it was, actually changed my life and has been the driving force behind my current existence. It was about an after apocalypse scenario where the main character survived because he knew how things worked and could survive because of it. Because of that influence, I have taught myself how to do almost anything, fix anything, build anything which has had a downside because I get asked by people to fix their stuff. LOL Because of that I even created my own position in a Global company by doing things no one else thought of. The main lesson was I learned was to be independent and if you have read any of my posts it is the reason I am not a fan of government dependence which makes you vulnerable to the whims of others. It was formative for me.

Wow! When you started reading, you really took it seriously, didn't you? Good for you!
The only major science fiction book that I really enjoyed as a teenager and that impacted me a lot (in kind of a scary way) was "A Brave New World" by Aldous Haxley (sp?) I believe.

But, when I read it again a few years ago, I didn't think that what used to be "science fiction" was becoming uncomfortably real to today's world!

Then there was "The Handmaid tale" which, as a woman, scared me even more! And I think that this "war on woman" we seem to be having today could lead us to a world not so far from that book! SCARY!

Today I saw 'About Time' with Rachel McAdams. It's about a guy who can travel in time to change events. He wants a girlfriend. It's a heartwarming story. Definitely worth a watch.

"All is Lost" is the Redford movie- he plays a sailor on a small sail boat that has troubles. Reviews are great so far- I think it is a fairly limited release but looks like a perfect role for Redford.

Certainly will see the second Hunger Games movie- I didn't read the books, but my daughter did- and she loved the movie. I thought the movie was very good but that is the danger of reading the book and then seeing the movie- movie's rarely capture the internal vision that the books create for me. The Godfather was one of the few that came close.

    Thor 2....

oddly, despite the rating, Natalie Portman does an extended full frontal nudity scene.

I don't see where a sequel could go. What would it be? Gravity 2: This Time It's Personal.

However I did enjoy the movie. I think it was the best film I've seen this year.
