1) Trade means skill. Qualification. Whatever. And yes, there's one suitable for everyone. And sorry, but anyone can do anything. No one is limited by their 'abilities' unless there is a bona fide disability which obviates a certain thing. No idea what 'interests' have to do with. Pick a bunch of things that will keep you fed and housed for life, then chose the one you hate least. It's not rocket science (which won't keep you fed, incidentally). The 'right choice for yourself' is whatever keeps you fed and housed and not a burden on the system. Learn to love what you must do, because you must do it. Of course that doesn't apply if your family is very very wealthy. 2) No, self-discipline is everything. And it only comes in the quantity needed when learned young via parental modelling. Once again, choosing is easy .. just pick the thing you hate least, from those which will feed you adequately. 3) Sure, you can learn self-discipline the hard and slow and imperfect way .. later in life. But it will never come close to that which is learned from birth. No idea what you mean by 'brittle'. 4) SOMETIMES, but that should not be the goal. It's very hit and miss. 5) Of course not. But any parent who fails this simple obligation, has no right to complain when their kid can't feed themselves. 6) Why would you want everyone being a doctor? There's a vast world of high demand trades out there - almost all of which will keep your kid fed and housed. But FTR, yes, anyone can become a doctor. It's entirely a product of hard work and self-discipline (like anything 'difficult') .. it absolutely does not require genius.
~ Yes , true. However remember there is a lot of crap on internet forums . People make false claims to justify their own point of view .
Okay, we have that straightened out. You're flat wrong. Abilities vary a great deal. "Pick a bunch of things" is where one considers his or her abilities and interests. It kept my father-in-law and his family well enough fed. I think your approach is unnecessarily limited. You can consider all you raised and look at your abilities and interests. The most cruel thing we do to young people is tell them they can be anything they want to be. It has to be our goal as teachers if parents can't or won't do the job. We have to at least try. Many people don't have the ability to become a doctor.
