I'm scratching my head over this one.

My wife and I are white evangelicals. Here’s why we chose to give birth to black triplets.

This past Sunday, my gorgeous wife – a white evangelical, like me — gave birth to our beautiful African-American triplet daughters whom we adopted as embryos. These sweet girls will hopefully soon be coming home to meet their 3-year-old African-American brother and 2-year-old biracial sister, both of whom we adopted as infants. The normalcy of this paragraph is something I have come to take for granted. Yet what seems to us to be the logical outcome of being pro-life is still something that to others often needs much explaining.

I'm wondering if this is like celebrities going to Africa to adopt black babies? Some sort of virtual signalling that "hey, I can't be racist. I have black babies?" Because it occurred to me that I've never seen or heard of Black parents raising white kids (other than on the Flash).

I have known several black adults who were adopted by white parents as infants 50 years ago.

What a strange thing to do. Why didn't they just adopt some more black babies, or take in kids in foster care? There are millions of kids waiting for loving homes. IMO--very 'unholy', and a bunch of PC bull(*)(*)(*)(*). Far be it for me to say I know what Jesus would do, but I don't think Jesus would be impressed. It is an abomination that they would have artificial insemination of someone else's egg and sperm when there are so many children living in poverty, and growing up without loving families. The money that procedure cost them, could have probably put food on the table of several foster homes for quite awhile.

IMO: A disgusting attempt to get attention.

My evangelical sister adopted two Filipino children. I thought that was strange because we grew up in a brutal, dysfunctional home. We would have been lucky to have been adopted, or been taken in as foster children. She could have adopted babies from the US. She should have remembered where she came from. To reiterate: There are children just like we were who need loving homes. (Then again: She did nothing but preach to them the whole time they were growing up. I consider that kind of parenting abusive. She probably did some kids a favor).

But to be fair to my sister, there are millions of unwanted Filipino babies born every year--a result of lack of birth control and a Catholic abhorrence to abortion. I read one statistic that said there are 15 orphans every square mile. The women don't believe in abortion, or even birth control, but they will have babies and abandon them.

The adoption thing I can understand if you can't have children naturally or just have enough time, resources, and love in your life that you are able to share that with a kid who otherwise wouldn't get anything like that. But this couple was, per their account, fertile, and actually went out of their way to find embryos that were black. That's not helping a kid who needs help, that's creating a kid who is going to be very embarrassed by his parents in a few years.

Black parents do raise white children. For instance, my (black) brother-in-law adopted a white baby and a black baby. They are both young adults now. He also helped raise his wife's white children from a former marriage and the two adopted babies joined the family.

The kids may be embarrassed down the road or not, but to be used as a political football is pretty creepy IMO.

Religiosity does that to some people.

Did you actually read the article you linked?

I'm certainly no fan of evangelicals but I can't really fault them for much here. They chose to adopt, which is a good thing given the number of children who need homes and they agreed to adopt non-white children because they knew they're more difficult to find homes for. The idea of the "adopting" embryos (that would otherwise be destroyed) is more unconventional but I can't say it's specifically bad. They're logic for requesting black embryos was only that their existing (adopted) children were black which I don't think was necessary but isn't unreasonable.

Given all the bad things done in the name of religion (including sometimes evangelical Christianity) I don't have anything bad to say about this couple who seem to have perfectly good intentions even if their motivations and decisions are quite different to my own.

I wasn't criticizing their choices, but I admit I have a hard time understanding them and I think the logic of adoption breaks down when you are talking about going on an embryo hunt.

I will say, if they specifically requested white embryos the reaction to this story would be totally different. They would be the biggest villains in the country.

In the context of their belief that life begins at conception (not that I share it), it arguably makes more sense to "adopt" embryos, which would otherwise be destroyed.

Quite possibly, but that's a failing of the country, not them.
