A large boat carrying 150 asylum seekers has been intercepted north of Australia's Christmas Island.

.People smugglers working within Australia .The night before, a boat with 88 passengers and crew was intercepted.

Last month 1,176 asylum seekers arrived, the highest since 2001.

It has been nine months since the Australian High Court struck down the government's plans to send 800 asylum seekers to Malaysia.

Both the government and opposition predicted the High Court's decision would lead to an increase in boat arrivals.

On Monday night, however the Australian current affairs program, Four Corners, will provide another reason for the recent surge.

"Smuggler's paradise" picks up from the Four Corners expose of people smuggling in Indonesia two years ago, to reveal smuggling networks are now operating from within Australia.

Considering the incompetence of all things Government run, there is no reason to believe our immigration / assylum seeker screening system to be any better than any of their other blithering bungles. PC doesn`t work with hard bitten people from regions where "dog eat dog" is the norm, these people hold Australia in contempt, to them, we are a country of naive softheads.

 

These illegal criminals (boat people) are no more legitimate refugees than I am a Nigerian housewife. I watched a programme just recently on TV that showed these financial opportunistic refugees cueing up to pay their $10,000 per ticket, and if they don’t make it here the first time they have heaps of money to spare to purchase another ticket for a second, and third attempt.

Its time we had politicians with a backbone who will take a stand against these criminals entering our country through the backdoor. Time to tell the Un Australia is accepting NO MORE refugees arriving here by boat or plane, and every single one of them will be returned to their destination of departure regardless of circumstance, and that Australia is spending no more money processing these criminals, and it WILL ONLY be accepting refugees from refugee camps.

These financial opportunistic scum are taking the places from legitimate refugees who have been waiting years in camps for the opportunity to start a new safe life in Australia, and it time something was done about it.

You'll find only around 1% of asylum seekers arrive by boat,, illegally. These people often don't have their documents in place or are persona non gratis. These are the ones which have to be investigated and vetted.

Those who arrive by commercial airliner are genuine refugees with documnets in place.

 

The media is fanning anti-immigration hysteria in Australia by reporting this kind of news stories very frequently and the Australian navy must make sure to intercept those boat people from Indonesia before reaching Australian territories to calm public fears. The high court rejected the government's plan to transfer illegal immigrants to detention camps in Malaysia and Australia may need a Plan B.

 

Almost all boat people are found to be legit refugees and granted permission to stay.

Almost all people who illegally stay in Australia arrive by plane. They're called tourists who then don't leave when their visas expire. I guess that's ok because most of them are white.

 

I saw that, and can`t believe that members of the same species that invented chewing gum could be so dumb.

 

I guess that it`s beacuse they come in the front door, and because they`re not drowning at sea, but you go with your racist angle if it helps your agenda.

 

...if people are so desperate to put their and their family's life on risk in getting on one of those boats, they will seek a better life.

On a personal basis, I agree whole heartedly. We would need to be inhuman to not sympathise with the plights of billions of people on this planet. My main issues with the people smuggling trade are the impracticality and unsustainability of this method of assylum seeking, and the potential for this problem to very quickly grow into a massive humanitarian disaster. There are hoards of unfortunate people who we have no hope of helping, the sad fact is that the numbers are simply too massive.

 

Of course it's racism. Legit refugees = bad, rich, white tourists who overstay and steal our jobs = good.

 

A few thousand people is massive? Try what happens elsewhere on the planet. They get hundreds of thousands to millions.

 

People like that are not interested in the rest of the world, so long as "I'm alright mate!", the rest of the world can go suck a lemon to them.

To me, we are ALL ILLEGAL REFUGEES here except for those indigenous nations who had been here as custodians of this land for 10's of thousands of years. The rest of us, just should be thankful we have such a wonderful freedom and welcome those less fortunate.

Maybe those who don't like it can move over there to Afghanistan for a while, see if they want to move back to Australia?

Alleged people smuggling network boss Captain Emad...works as a trolley collector in Canberra.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says claims people smugglers are operating in Canberra are an extraordinary indictment of government incompetence.

Mr Abbott's comments follow an ABC Four Corners investigation which found at least six people-smuggling agents came to Australia on a boat in 2010 posing as genuine asylum seekers and that all were granted residency.

He says he's concerned people smugglers have arrived undetected and have been living in taxpayer-funded housing while going about their criminal activities.

A people trafficking kingpin allegedly smuggled himself, his family and colleagues into Australia posing as asylum seekers before brazenly working under the nose of the government as a shopping trolley collector in Canberra.

In damaging claims against immigration authorities, Iraqi people smuggler Emad Abdul Razak Tharmir al Absi was allegedly fast-tracked through Australian visa processing and granted residence, along with at least six smuggling agents, two years ago.

His audacious swindle has reportedly allowed himself and his family to first reside in Brisbane and then the nation's capital, with some living in taxpayer-funded public housing across Canberra.

He and his fellow agents, all who received refugee status, have allegedly continued to operate their illegal trade from Sydney and Melbourne.

Four Corners alleged Capt Emad's network was still working from Australia, including lying to the families of 97 asylum seekers who disappeared on a boat in November 2010 while pocketing hundreds of thousands of dollars from them.

Capt Emad - allegedly processed in Australia under the name Ali al Abassi - was recently found working as a trolley supervisor at Gungahlin shopping centre in Canberra.

"No, no, please. I have work to do, don't disturb me," he told Four Corners.

In a statement last night, the Australian Federal Police said it did not comment on its operations but 14 alleged people smuggling organisers had been arrested since 2008.

"The AFP does not confirm or deny who it does or does not investigate," the AFP said.

The ABC show said the main players in the people smuggling network met in early 2010 at a Jakarta restaurant, where Capt Emad joined smugglers named Abu Ali al Kuwaiti, Mohammed Basrawi and his brother Watheq, and Abdullah al Sharifi. The group discussed how to avoid authorities, including the Immigration Department, Border Protection and the Federal Police.

An Iraqi refugee helping Four Corners as a whistleblower, Hussain Nasir, claimed there were many smugglers now living in Australia and described Capt Emad as "head of the smugglers".

"He's the head of the snake," Nasir told the show.

The show said Capt Emad was chosen to lead the trip, which left a North Java port on January 10, 2010.

He and his team had kept away from other passengers, while an Indonesian initially drove the boat. On the second night the Indonesian pilot put on a life jacket, threw a drum in the water, took his radio and jumped into the sea. A boat was waiting to pick him up.

Capt Emad, a trained ship's captain, allegedly took over the boat and the food and equipment. One of those on board, Mustapha, said: "He had a map and a compass and he was studying (them) to plot the right course."

But, as the group approached Christmas Island, Capt Emad allegedly stopped the boat and threw his equipment, including a satellite phone, into the sea. He then let off flares to summon the Royal Australian Navy. Another person on board, Rahim, said: "When Australian officials came after Emad fired the flares, he left the wheel house and went to the back of the boat. He was trying to (hide) he was in charge."

The boat was listed by the government as having 43 passengers and no crew.

Four Corners said Capt Emad had sent his wife, adult children and dependants by boat ahead of him in 2009, with all granted refugee status, while the adults were provided with government housing.

On the boat that arrived in January 2010, Capt Emad also allegedly brought his daughter-in-law and her child.

In April 2010, Immigration allegedly gave Capt Emad a protection visa and Australian residency, while at least six agents on Capt Emad's boat received refugee status and were released from detention to cities across Australia.

Enter Australia with No documentation or No visa, and you get returned to your place of departure on the next plane regardless of whether you are claiming refugee status or not - time to put a stop to scum entering this country under false pretenses. It time to tell the UN if they want to financially support this scum, then they can create a country of their own and use their own bloody money for a change, instead of dictating terms and using everyone's else's money just to make themselves look good. Its time Australia removed its signature from this stupid incompetent UN refugee convention, and started doing things on our own.
Surely Australians have the mental ability to be able to bring into their own country genuine refugees waiting in refugee camps all over the world without having to be dictated too by the UN? Time for Australia to make its own policy on "what" they determine is a genuine refugee, and not the UN. Surely Australia can think for itself, or does it always have to have its nappy changed and be bruped by the demands and dictates of the UN?

 

It's time to find some island in the middle of the Pacific and put you clowns on it.

 

You condoning people smugglers accessing Australia through pretending they are innocent refugees doesn't surprise me. Maybe you would be better off sparing some of your sympathy for the tens of thousands of "genuine" refugees in camps all over the world who don't have $10,000 to pay for a backdoor ticket into Australia under false pretenses, or who don't engage in criminal activity by engaging criminal people smugglers to bring into Australia in the first place.

But the real question is: do these white people who over stay their visa's turn out to be people smugglers pretending to be refugees?

 

Does any significant amount of boat people do the same? Finding a half dozen out of thousands is statistically small as to be ignored as an outlier.

 

The security checks done on Captain Emad were really thorough by an incompetent department; so how many more 1000’s of illegal pretend “boatie” criminals have they let in through the backdoor.

Just show me one instance where ONE white person overstaying their visa has turned out to be an illegal people smuggler?

You can pretend roses and magical light shines form these peoples arses, but they will always be scum trying to enter this country through the backdoor by paying money, and if you had a brain in your skull you would also see that. Surely the tens of thousands of genuine people waiting in refugee camp deserve you compassion more than these scum-bag boaties.

 

I think you miss the point here. The issue is not the boat people themselves, it is the parasitic people that fuel the industry. If you had watched the story, you would have seen that the very first point raised was 90 people have vanished of the face of the earth without a trace from these nasty parasites and they where never reported or seen again. It is also that there is big security issues with the checking of refugee status that needs to be addressed.

I know you support this type of industry as you have stated so emphatically previously, but don't you think the waste of life should stop?
