Former Slater & Gordon partner Nick Styant-Browne has challenged the firm's account of the departure of then-junior partner Julia Gillard following an internal inquiry.

In an email statement to AAP, Mr Styant-Browne said the firm's statement issued on Monday about the inquiry in 1995, a subsequent leave of absence and her resignation in 1996 "was stunningly incomplete".

According to The Weekend Australian, Mr Styant-Browne had said Ms Gillard left her job at Slater & Gordon because the firm "took a very serious view" of her conduct.

The attorney, now based in the US, on Wednesday backed the views of another former partner, Peter Gordon, outlined in a working draft statement made public on Tuesday.

"What he says is entirely accurate," Mr Styant-Browne said.

Mr Gordon's draft statement, published by The Australian, referred to the firm's partners being "extremely unhappy" with Ms Gillard and considering her termination.

"How does Slater & Gordon reconcile its own statement with this account," Mr Styant-Browne said.

Slater & Gordon managing partner Andrew Grech said in a statement on Monday Ms Gillard had "co-operated fully with the internal review and denied any wrongdoing".

He said the review had "found nothing which contradicted the information provided by Ms Gillard at the time".

Mr Styant-Browne said he was aware Slater & Gordon was considering such a statement.

"Although I did not contemplate the extent to which it would seek to protect the prime minister," he said.

"I could not support that position, and made public a careful and balanced account of what I could disclose about the investigation, and what Ms Gillard had acknowledged in her interview.

"That account remains unchallenged in every particular."

The issue surrounds Ms Gillard's work to set up a legal entity for then-Australian Workers Union boss Bruce Wilson, who was her partner at the time.

Mr Wilson was later accused of corruption but no charges were ever laid.

Ms Gillard has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

"We are talking about matters 17 years ago which have been dealt with on the public record," she told Sky News. "I did nothing wrong."

Mr Gordon has also said he had found nothing to contradict Ms Gillard's statements about the events.

"I believed at the time that there was no explicit or indirect evidence that she was involved in any wrongdoing", he said through another statement provided by his lawyers on Tuesday.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This needs to be investigated fully and independantly. It`s not good to have a shaddow such as this hanging over the head of the PM.

Did she ever answer the accusation that she did it off the books and without opening a file?

Julia Gillard isn`t known for honest dialogue, there has been ample opportunity for Gillard to put this matter to rest, all she has produced to date, has been dodgy spin, tantrums, and irrelevant accusations of sexism. Doesn`t look good, for someone to be so close to union corruption and not know what`s happening in front of their nose, suggests either overwhealming gullibility, or another Gillard lie.

Yes looks like the ETS isn't going to cause the world to end so they now have to drag the sewers to find something, God help the Libs if they ever have to write some policies, much better to rake up muck. Easier since they live in the sewers means that they can fight the election without getting out of bed.

Despite all Abbott's negativity, people are starting to see they have nothing, naught, zilch.

Your right DV, the current crop of liberals under Abbott has a bad "stench". They gotta get rid of this clown and his front bench cronies who live and breath negativity, which is written over their sad looking and nasty countenances! Surely the liberals have got better than who is currently representing them. They are essentially playing cheap politics with their never ending sieving of feces contaminated water. Like you said, it is time for them to demonstrate they have real policies. But hey, they'll do it at their own demise because I think people are sick and tired of this never cycle of negativity.

Outside your obvious Labor stoogieness TV, you and Dominor are right in one respect.....its time to put the negative away and offer up some insight into their policy. They don't have to give us exact transcript of said policies, as they are not the government, but they do have to indicate the fact that they actually have some.

I alluded some time ago in another thread that if they keep Abbott the Libs may actually lose the unloseable election. This prophecy may still come true as the time has now passed to dump him and I don't think this man can change his ways. Negative is his style and always has been. From where I sit we are (*)(*)(*)(*)ed if we do and (*)(*)(*)(*)ed if we don't.

What topic, oh you mean another of the endless ones trying to discredit the government and hide the fact that the Liberals under Abbott are a lost cause who have nothing, not a thing, constructive to say.

Now there's a topic ... "Constructive Policies of an Abbott led Government"

As much as I come across as a labor stooge I actually ain't. I simply despise BS and that's all we seem to hear from the libs, especially this crew. Abbott is a deceptive liar.....full stop! I'd trust a chronic drug addict over Abbott and his Lemmings.

Are you lot really that stupid? It's Abbott's job to be negative! the Lib/Nat coalition are the OPPOSITION, it is their job to play devils advocate and OPPOSE everything the government does. It is there job to be constantly trying to unseat the government and government members. That's what makes strong governments, having this other group, the OPPOSITION, constantly trying to rubbish everything you do.

If you really believe that, then you deserve Abbott.

The oppositions job is not to oppose everything that the government puts forward. It's job is to look at policy, look at alternatives, weigh up what they believe is the best for the electorate, argue, negotiate and put forward alternatives to policies they see as not good for the electorate.

According to Abbott and Adultmale, the opposition must oppose everything, even if they believe it is in the best interest of the country.
It is not their job to "unseat" the government, it is their job to strive to be a better choice for government.
If the Abbott mob spent as much time reviewing policies, coming up with alternatives, putting something better together and selling it to the electorate, then they may be fit to govern, at the moment they are having problems trying to oppose.
