No it is not, you ask for 57 mm ammo at a gun store, and you will get strange looks, If you ask for 8 mm Mauser, of so many grains bullet weight, and you will get what you ask for. It is like asking for .30 caliber ammo, and again, there is lots of .30 caliber stuff. The K designation in a Mauser 98K is the shorter carbine Mauser as opposed to the longer rifle. .380 at one time was 9mm kurtz or short 9mm

To Answer the original posters question: Why are Assault Weapons so Deadly ? They are not Assault Weapons, they are regular Semiautomatic Firearms in the hands of Criminals. They are not more deadly than any other pump shotgun or lever action rifle.

As a fixed magazine of 10 rounds or less the SKS rifle used in the Dallas shooting is perfectly legal in Austrailia and probably one of the more common rifles owned in your home country. I'm willing to bet you didn't know that.
