Richard North Patterson, best selling novelist, attorney, political commentator, and member of the Council on Foreign Relations asked the question, “Why are Republicans like this?”

There are many different opinions of what caused the lunacy gripping the GOP. Most people realize it did not happen overnight, and while most conservatives and neoconservatives have always been distrustful of non-whites, when the voters overwhelmingly elected an African-American Democrat for President, the right-wingers completely lost their minds.

Yes, they always bitterly hate any Democrat elected to the Presidency. FDR, Harry Truman, JFK, LBJ, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton are all loathed by conservatives and neoconservatives to this day. But when it comes to President Obama, their hatred for a black President runs so deep it is impossible to measure.

Obama is foreign born. He’s a Muslim. He hates America, He’s a terrorist sympathizer. He’s a (insert crazy accusation(s) here). The right wing's mania never ends.

The last time a Republican had anything nice to say about Barrack Obama was John McCain during his 2008 campaign. When his supporters would go off the deep end, McCain, fearing their ignorance would damage his image as a serious candidate, would correct their foolishness.

During one speaking engagement when the crowd verbally attacked Obama, "I have to tell you. Sen. Obama is a decent person and a person you don’t have to be scared of as President of the United States," McCain told a supporter at a town hall meeting in Minnesota who said he was “scared” of the prospect of an Obama Presidency and of who the Democrat would appoint to the Supreme Court.

“Come on, John!” one audience member then yelled out as the Republican crowd expressed dismay at their nominee. Others yelled "liar," and "terrorist," referring to Obama.

As the event continued, McCain passed his wireless microphone to one woman who said, "I can't trust Obama. I have read about him and he's not, he's not uh — he's an Arab. He's not — " before she could finish her idiotic statement, McCain retook the microphone and replied: "No, ma'am. He's a decent family man [and] citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues and that's what this campaign's all about. He's not [an Arab]."

From the moment the 2008 election did not return the GOP to the White House by voting a landslide for McCain and Palin, Republican leaders vowed to “Make Obama fail.” Conservatives and neoconservatives cheered at the idea, and continue to cheer every time any Republican politician or right wing pundit repeated that sentiment.

The right wing’s joy as they hoped the Congressional Republicans could make it impossible for the Democrats to reverse the Great Republican Recession of 2008. Placing party over country proved the conservatives and neoconservatives have a total lack of empathy for the millions of their fellow citizens suffering financial tragedy. Average Americans were losing their jobs, their life savings, their homes, and many would never recover, but the Republicans, the conservatives, and the neoconservatives did not care. Neither did they care that their useless Middle East wars were killing and maiming thousands of U.S. troops.

The Congressional Republicans instead used the 2008 economic disaster they caused as a political tool, and focused on prolonging the economic struggle of those most damaged. As the G"NO"P, this was their way of hurting the new President (and perhaps punishing the rebellious voters). Again, the rank-and-file conservatives and neoconservatives cheered. The G"NO"P caused a tremendous amount of needless misery to average citizens, and this made conservatives and neoconservatives happy, believing no one noticed it was the G”NO”P to blame.

This period was the infancy of the Republican Party’s lunacy.

In 2009 John McCain returned to the Senate, and his running mate Sarah Palin, became the right wing’s cheerleader to make Obama a “one term President". The years following were rough for many Americans as the Congressional Republicans opposed everything, even issues they had supported in the past. It was the G"NO"P's only policy to just say, “NO”.

Though the conservatives and neoconservatives claim the Republican Party is the “Party of Lincoln”, Abraham Lincoln was a progressive. This was true of Republican Theodore Roosevelt as well. After Roosevelt left office, conservatives took control of the Republican Party.

That was a century ago, and since then, the GOP went from the Party of Lincoln, to the Party of Goldwater, to the Party of Reagan, to the Party of Palin. Palin!

The vast majority of U.S. voters have considered Sarah Palin a laughingstock since she first came to national attention in 2008. This alone was a major factor in destroying McCain’s hopes of being elected President.

Mitt Romney’s 2012 campaign proved him to be the only rational candidate among his fellow hopefuls. But his rapid metamorphosis from moderate to ultra-conservative helped Obama do what the G"NO"P spent four years trying to stop, be reelected to a second term.

We are now entering another Presidential election cycle, and the cast of the GOP’s Clown Show for 2016 has doubled-down on the hysteria of 2012. Unfortunately, this increased level of craziness is everything the conservatives and neoconservatives want. When one of the 2016 GOP hopefuls shows even a hint of rational thought, their poll numbers bottom out.

Presently, the demented ramblings of Ben Carson have become the most appealing to the right wing. Part of that appeal is because Carson is what some minorities call a “coconut”, brown on the outside, white on the inside. Given this, his ultra-right wing nuttiness is really the only aspect of his candidacy keeping him popular. At any sign of sanity (which seems doubtful), he will be out on his ear faster than any of his white opponents.

Given the popularity of the current GOP front-runners, the madness of the Republican Party's devoted voter base has been solidified. Understanding this, it won’t matter if Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, or Martin O'Malley wins the White House, the G”NO”P will continue hurting average Americans to “Make the new President fail.”

To the right wing, the billionaires and Big Business will remain their gods, while they brand liberals, minorities, and the poor as tools of Satan trying to steal America’s “soul”.

Even if a Republican does win the Presidency (perish the thought), the derangement of many Congressional Republicans will only make our situation worse, which will further endanger the economic well-being of the entire U.S. population. Their war mentality is, and will continue to be a menace to the entire world.

If the huffpo views the GOP this way then the GOP is heading in the right direction. A liberal rag like that always has the wrong ideas.

I agree with Richard North Patterson's description of the current Republican Party and with his opinion that many Republicans have a hatred toward President Obama and wanted his Presidency to fail since the first day Barack Obama took Office.

When I got to this, I realized the mentality of the author, and knew right away there was nothing further worth reading.

Obama is hated for his incompetence, dishonesty, and narcissistic personality. His divisive tactics have done serious harm to the country that will take years to repair. The tendency on the Left is to play the race card, and label anyone who acknowledges the Obama reality as racist. This author is exhibit #1.

Right-wingers project their feelings on others constantly. But, when a President fails, everyone suffers.

That is why the conservatives' and neoconservatives' thrill at the G"NO"P's ongoing obstructionism of Obama's and the Democrats efforts to stimulate the economy, help all Americans obtain health insurance, end the Middle East wars, avoid starting further wars, slow gun violence, create jobs, lessen income inequality, and everything else to help average Americans is so baffling to rational people.

Republican tax cuts for the super-rich are a proven bust when it comes to putting people to work in jobs that pay a livable wage. Only the obtuse defenders of Reaganomics cannot see this.

You do realize that every positive you attribute to Obama, he did with a republican house. So either you are saying he has done nothing good or you must also give credit to the republicans.

Nope, Reid said records killin republican bills and leaving them in limbo while refusing to discuss or compromise. The few times he did, like the unemployment extension, the republicans quickly settled. Not much they can do when the democrats will not meet them halfway.

To be historically correct aka politically incorrect, there were no "neoconservatives" when FDR, Truman, JFK and LBJ were elected as POTUS because those would become neoconservatives were still the liberal base of the Democrat party.

If JFK would have lived beyond 1963 and his political views would have remained the same, JFK would have become a neoconservative in the mid/late 1970's.

Before 1970 there was little difference between Democrats and Republicans. Both were considered to be nationalist. Any American who wasn't a nationalist was very likely a communist or a member of the CPUSA splinter groups of the 1950's or part of the radical left counter culture movement of the 1960's.

    FYI:
Around 1952 the Republican "right" divided all Democrats into five categories; the criminals, the traitors, the cowards and the incompetents who always blundered into war and the effete who lacked sufficient vigor too invade China and conquer it from falling too the communist.

This would result driving a deep schim between the two parties.

It would also lead to JFK and LBJ getting us into a shooting war in Vietnam fearing if South East Asia fell to communism, the American people would again blame the Democrats like they did when China fell to communism during the late 1940's under the Truman administration.

By 1960 during the Nixon / Kennedy Presidential election it came down to who had bigger cajones of standing up to communist expansion in the world ? Nixon and the Republicans or JFK and the Democrats ? With the kelp of the grave yards in Cook County, Il. the American people went with JFK.

    The rest is history.

When Bush stood at Ground Zero with that megaphone, I supported him. When he sent forces into Afghanistan, I supported him 100%...but when he started talking about Iraq and Saddam and the "Axis of Evil", I knew it was a bait-n-switch.

Republicans haven't given Obama anywhere as near the support as Bush had in the wake of 9/11, even when Obama finally killed Bin Laden. This is the sort of blatant hypocrisy the GOP has become that leads many to think it is the party of bigots. Actions speak louder than words.

Everyone congratulated him for bin laden.

The problem with Obama is there is nothing to support because he has no plan. Can you honestly tell me what his foreign policy in the Middle East is?

The dems wanted an unemployment extension and the republicans wanted an extension on the Bush tax cuts. They compromised and it passed. The house sent Reid hundreds of bills where he refused to allow them to the floor for discussion. Any one of those bills could have been a starting point to work on compromises but Reid refused. What it did was force the republicans to begin using procedural tactics such as the filibuster to force the democrats to the table but then Reid invoked the nuclear option to take that away.

The problem in congress are the democrats. The republicans in there are some of the weakest in our nations history. This is why the conservatives started a civil war in the party to oust them.

The lying from Democrats is getting out of control. They continue to say they support social minority groups, while stifling their growth and opportunities, dividing the country to be elected. No one is more of an opportunist than the Democrats

"Never let a crisis go to waste-Rahm Emmanuel.

    That should be their motto.

We're discussing GOP lies. You know, like how Carly said that PP was dissecting babies, how Trump said he was worth $10 billion, how Obama doubled the deficit, voter fraud is a serious issue, racism doesn't exist, etc.

Then there's Carson's mountain of lies that nobody from the right is challenging him on.

Democrats are the only thing stopping Republican oppression of minorities -- from immigrants to African Americans who can't find a job simply because they're black. While the GOP are ignoring #BlackLivesMatter , Democrats are proudly standing with minorities and calling for equal treatment under the law.

Why are progressives so full of hate? They've had their Savior elected to two terms but they're still consumed with hate. They've been given everything they've asked for but still operate out of hate.
I can't think of a more disgusting ideology than that of a progressive. It becomes rather obvious reading these threads that if given a choice they would murder every conservative minded individual in the country.

I'd rather be ruled by Stalin than these bunch of effeminate school boys defecating in their own sandbox.
