Its interesting to see threads, started by whites, that put forward the notion that interracial dating is the epitome of evil. However, it brings to mind none other than the racist Strom Thurmond, who while he was publicly denouncing any sort of integration between blacks and whites, was privately having sex with a black women. Indeed he fathered a child with his black mistress. Why do you suppose such a staunch racist would be attracted to a woman of the race that he was attempted to build a wall against?

Race mixing is bad because it's ethnocide. It ultimately leads to the disparition of your race. The point is not hating/demeaning others but defending your identity.

Who cares about that one hypocrite? Yes, people can act against their beliefs sometimes, but how is that relevant to the bigger picture?

Perhaps he had to appear to be a racist to get votes from racists in that era? But wasn't a real racist in that he loved black women? Not like we know of many actually honest politicians.

I don't know if it's a case of him preferring black women or simply preferring any woman over going solo.

As George Costanza said, "She's a woman; in the room."

Racism is often a generalized belief while interpersonal relations are specific to certain people.

My grandparents were racist by any reasonable measure. Yet at their 60th wedding anniversary party they had black friends of theirs sitting at their table while many of their children and grandchildren stood outside in the heat.

The entire "but I have black friends" does have an element of truth to it

Well I didn't say he preferred them, but it is a fact that he was sexually attracted to them. And it makes you wonder why someone who was so staunchly opposed to racial integration on the grounds that it would somehow contaminate the white race would feel like that. The only way you could feel like it would contaminate the white race would be that you would have to feel that in some way, blacks were a degrading, contaminating element and thus inferior. So why would such a pure person be TRULY attracted to a contaminated object. I probably need to think about it, but somehow the fact that he was attracted in that way means that the racism was simply a projection of his own self loathing.

I went to college with a white guy who was unrepentantly racist He made no secret of his loathing for black people.

Yet his girlfriend (later his wife) was black. Why he liked her was no mystery to most of us. She was a smoking hot diver on the swim team. He even had a saying to that effect:

"White is white. Black is black. But all ***** is hot and sweet" (pardon my language).

Why she cared anything about him is a mystery.

The last I heard decades later they are still married and he's still a racist.

Though its my understanding that family reunions are awkward.

I always assumed it was part of "Plantation privilege". Typical in so many democrats around these days...

I think that the hostility that Thurmond exhibited towards blacks was due, IN PART, to his sexual attraction towards black women. It is clear that a white person who supports the segregation of whites and blacks views blacks as contaminated. If such a person at the same time has desires in which blacks are the objects of sexual attraction, then they will be forced to permit what they view as a contaminating influence into their mind. In order to wash their mind of this contaminating influence, they must project the contamination that is in their mind onto some external object of what they feel is the contaminated race. Thus blacks become the sacrificial lamb so to speak, that washes the person of their contamination.

I would further put forward that quite a bit of racism can be traced back to some sort of frustrated sexual desire.

It is worth noting that a great deal of Thurmonds racism seemed to have moderated considerably once he got older.

Likely more of a public exhibition due to political expediency. Politicians will be politicians at the end of the day. Its usually hard to teach an old dog new tricks. But, I can't say for sure.

The effects of religious brainwashing and racism tend to diminish with age. I have a distant cousin in Illinois who once wore the white sheet. But he finally came to his senses and even voted for Obama.

It was probably a fetish. That would explain why he spoke out so strongly against the races mixing. He was caught between his religious mumbo jumbo and his inner animal. He couldn't accept his own desires so he turned it into a faux crusade out of guilt.

We see the same crap with gay Republicans who rage against homosexuality, and then get caught having gay sex in a bathroom or whatever.

Yep! That pretty much sums it up. I really like how you put it as "He was caught between his religious mumbo jumbo and his inner animal." What it amounts to is that the racism was a manifestation of his self loathing.

My dad never cared for black people but he voted for President Obama for the following reasons stated by him:

    1) Dad didn't like having professional soldiers in high political office (John McCain).
    2) Obama was a democrat.
    3) He wanted to be part of making history.

Hardly a partisan thing, that scenario plays out everyday with people with no political, religious, ethnic or sex affiliation. Not sure if this was narrow ideology or just poke a party opportunity?

On a related note, there is a TV series called Scandal. Essentially its about some white guys boning a pretty young black girl. Its interesting that its very popular. Just like one time I knew a group of black guys who are essentially racists. They have some sort of notion that the jews spoken about in the Bible are actually black people. Their whole ideology rests on that. Man, they could go one about white people this, white people that. But I remember showing one of them a picture of a pretty white girl. All of that white people crap went out the window! :roflol::roflol::roflol::roflol:

Thurmond would eat oatmeal instead of bacon and eggs for breakfast.

Uhh...just because you are a man who is racist against a particular race doesnt mean you aren't interested in ****ing women who belong to that race.

Men have penises. They like putting them inside females. Melanin content matters a lot less when sex is on the brain.
