Alas, I am about to be operated on by an American dentist who somehow got past immigration.

What should I do? Should I take an interpreter?

Ballarat is a lovely country town. Heaps of Australian history pertaining to the gold rush.

You just finished telling someone if they cant leave a big enough "gratuity" then they cant afford to eat out. So, is this "gratuity" actually required or not?

Let's assume that my answer is "yes". What does that have to do with slavery?

Now, let's assume that my answer is "no". What does that have to do with slavery?

So your answer is yes and no? How can you argue a point you dont know your own answer to?

You're the one trying to prove a point, namely that gratuity is akin to slavery. I merely gave my opinion that one shouldn't go to a full service restaurant unless one has enough money to leave a tip for the waitstaff.

Now, please elaborate on your assertion regarding tips and slavery. I am amused.

    Amusement is good.

I also do not tip for service I have already paid for.

Just answer the question. Is a gratuity required or not? Simple question. Are you scared to answer it?

Are waiters so enslaved that they have to beg for tips?

I have never felt it necessary to tip my plumber.

Waitstaff in American restaurants are nothing more than slaves to their masters,, terrible wages and conditions.

It's about tme they get off their collective arses and do something about it.

It depends. Some restaurants add gratuity automatically to the bill and some do not.

    So...................

Let's assume that my answer is "yes". What does that have to do with slavery?

Now, let's assume that my answer is "no". What does that have to do with slavery?

...so, it is acceptable to not pay the automatic gratuity?

Bein' as it would be a goodwill gesture you might not want to make.

A goodwill gesture is just that, a goodwill gesture.

    It shouldn't be compulsory.

    I would have thought so.

And the idea of tipping a waiter who asks me how my meal (not cooked by a waiter) is, escapes me.

LOL! You boys need to get out more. The waitstaff in American restaurants are usually the best paid people in the building. Of course, in Australese that is the same as slavery...

I can see why you guys don't tip. Every meal would end with the gnashing of teeth and some drama queen trying to "free" the waitstaff.

Who cares if the waitstaff are enslaved? As long as we don't have to pay to free them from their bondage.

That would be a matter for Amnesty International.

...Which would imply that they are capable of doing "something about it"...which would mean that they aren't "slaves" at all. Hmmm....

So jealousy is the source of your ire? Look, you have to work your way up like everyone else. You'll get there one day, don't lose heart.

Which means dish monkeys, sh!thouse cleaners and shoeshine boys are even further down the ladder of the enslaved.

Don't talk about it, be about it. Go get a better job if you aren't happy with your current circumstances.
