what was the context of my post?

if a lack of empathy allows you to believe that it is OK to carpet bomb people then you shouldn't have to ask what is wrong with it.

Thank YOU for sharing your thoughts.

You sound like the heroes of my childhood. men who went to war because they HAD to, not because of populist politics.

The part I quoted about us distancing ourselves from the enemy.

There is a reason why I am good at my job and why I can handle combat. I have no sympathy and am most certainly not empathetic with our enemies. I have no problem "carpet bombing" (I honestly do not know if civilians understand what that is) people that are trying to kill my brothers and sisters in arms. Whether we are there for the right reasons or not is on the back burner because there are people I care about in trouble.

so you regard civilans as the enemy?

your government is responsible for the deaths of your fellow soldiers. you were sent to fight a war for the business interests they are in bed with, not for the sake of the american people.

Which means that the UK, Germany and France combined, give more than the US although they have a smaller population. I'd hate for you to realise how much the entire EU is giving compared to you.

    2008 stats:

In terms of foreign aid as a percentage of GDP, the US is a midget. A stingy midget. Even Greece was more generous in 2008.

Phew,,I'm glad someone cleared this up.

As an Australian, I very disappointed at Australia's contribution per GDP to foreign aid.

This is exactly why certain people could never survive in the armed forces. They do not, and will never, understand this underlying concept. You sir are the epitome of what it means to be a great pilot. I am truly grateful that us ground pounders have guys like you as our guardian angels in the sky.

You are on par with NZ. But if we look at private donations from citizens only, I believe Australians and New Zealanders are amongst the most generous people on Earth. Awryly has posted this info in another thread somewhere, showing that Kiwis with their angel wings can actually fly:floating:

Also it's good to note that a substantial part of US aid goes to war-torn countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan - war-torn mostly by US troops of course ...

Whatever reason the government sent us to war is irrelevant. The bottom line is that we are there and our troops are the most important thing in the world to each other when in combat. In war your brothers in arms are all you have and we will do anything to ensure the safety of each other. This is something that those who have not been to war have a hard time understanding.

If you believe war is wrong, or if these particular wars are wrong then petition to get our troops home. But as long as our troops are there expect them to put the safety of each other over everything else, and expect them to ensure the safety of each other by any means necessary.

If you have a problem with that then fight to get them home, but do not fight them nor blame them for doing this.

    agree.

I hope things have improved since this graph was constructed, because we are one nation who is travelling well in difficult economic times, and there is no excuse for us being mean when there is so much real poverty in the world.

well actually ... looks like most of it goes to Israel, followed by Egypt ... although Egypt's order of priority may change now ..... dictators in your pocket are preferable to uncertain democracies.

I think it's because they include military aid, probably to boost their numbers.

I don't think the OECD does that:

Actually everyone is a hypocrite. The ones who claim they aren't are liars. You'll have to be more specific though.

I do not have to be more specific. I have already been. You brag about giving the most. And when shown that you actually give the least in terms of GDP. You say you do not care. Perhaps you only lack empathy?

Maybe you guys should take the money you spend on charity and invest in your military. Maybe then you won't have to call for the US disguised as NATO for help invading Libya for oil.

I've noticed this also. War isn't something great or something we should celebrate. My position right now is that it is morally justified, but only in certain circumstances. But people do not think about all the of dying that will be result of a war. Husbands, sons, daughters, wives, cousins, grandsons, granddaughters, nephews, and nieces will all die, hopefully with the end resulting being the world is a better place, but sadly that is not always the case (Vietnam). So when I say I support a war, I do so with great hesitation.
