Why don't men want the Covid vaccines? How should we reach them?

Women are accepting the Covid-19 vaccines at a rate 10% higher than men, despite the fact that women have had more side effects to the vaccines than men, and men have died of Covid-19 2.4 times more often than women.

So men risk more when they catch Covid-19, and they risk fewer side effects (for example, the infamous CVST blood clots associated with the J&J shot have been found in America only in women aged 18 to 50; no men). Still, they don't want the vaccine.

In Los Angeles County, for example, 44% of women got their shots while only 30% of men did. Latino and black men are particularly reluctant in Los Angeles County, while white and Asian men are accepting the vaccine twice as frequently than their black and Latino counterparts.

Part of the disparity comes from the way the vaccines were prioritized: first for the elderly (there are more elderly women than elderly men) and for healthcare workers (75% of the healthcare workforce is made of women) and teachers (again, 75% are women).

But even accounting for these priority drives, still, men when polled are less likely to accept the vaccines.

The attempt to get 80% of the US adult population vaccinated by the summer, will certainly fail if men continue to be hesitant about the vaccines. Men seem to be traditionally less inclined to get vaccines than women, as shown in the flu vaccination rates for the United States: 63% for women, 53% for men.

What do you all think are the cultural impediments for more men to accept the vaccines, and what should be done to reach out to them?

From what I hear, It’s mostly older white Republican men that are resisting the vaccine. I think a big reason many of them are resisting is they still think Covid was either a hoax or at least blown out of proportion, in order to defeat Trump. Sounds crazy but I believe it falls right in line with many other things that many Trump supporters are willing to believe.

Or it could be something more practical and not partisanely motivated at all could be something as simple as every time you turn around you hear there's a new variant of the vaccine or the virus that the vaccine you just got is completely worthless for what are you supposed to do go get a vaccine two or three times a month

Agreed, with all the minimizing of the pandemic, but it's still a bit hard to understand why Republican men are particularly reticent. Just today Trump gave an interview to the NY Post highly praising and recommending the vaccines. He claims credit for them. Why won't his followers take them?

Who is saying that the vaccine is completely worthless for variants? Specific quotes please, with links, to reliable scientific sources. And do understand that it's not just antibodies, but also cell immunity.

And who is saying you're supposed to get a vaccine two or three times a month??? Pfizer is talking about annual boosters. So is Moderna. Much like for the flu shot that requires annual boosters. Please stop spreading misinformation. NOBODY is recommending vaccines two or three times a month.

I think it might be tied in to the anti masker “You can’t tell ME what to” movement. If I was REALLY cynical I would suggest these are often the same men who are happy to dictate reproductive rights to women - but I can only take cynicism so far.......

I'm just telling you what I've heard are you telling us that the two or three most common vaccines cover all the variants out there and that they're expected to cover the ones it'll be coming in the near future as well

These vaccines have different efficacy rates to prevent an INFECTION with some of the variants... but all three we have here, the J&J, the Moderna, and the Pfizer, have demonstrated high efficacy rates against hospitalizations and deaths INCLUDING from the variants. From this to conclude like you did that they are COMPLETELY WORTHLESS is a HUGELY mistaken idea. So, yes, you can catch the variants more often despite the vaccines but you remain unlikely to be hospitalized or to die if you got the vaccine, including from the variants, which is what counts, no? By the way, the efficacy of the vaccines against the B.1.1.7 (the U.K. Kent variant) is just as good in all regards as their efficacy against the ancestral strains, and that's the most prevalent variant in the United States. Sure, they are less efficacious against the B.1.351 (South African) and P.1 (Brazilian) but still, they avoid death.

Sure, you've heard it... but you've heard wrong. There is a lot of misinformation out there, either just naïve and misguided, or actually malicious and intentional.

And you haven't explained yet who said we need the vaccines two to three times per month. There is no scientific source saying so. None.

I never said a scientific source said so I simply refer to the fact that you hear about all these new variants it seems like two or three times a month I'm posting on my cell phone at work so I don't really have access to my laptop but I'll take this subject up with you more in-depth later I'm sure there's more information out there cuz I have heard the vaccines can be useless

Again, you've heard wrong. Not useless. Just less efficacious but still quite efficacious. If you want correct sources, just look at my two threads on the subject, State of the Vaccines, and SARS-CoV-2 Variants. You'll learn a lot of what needs to be learned about vaccine efficacy and variants.

    http://www.politicalforum.com/index.php?threads/the-state-of-the-vaccines.576983/

    http://www.politicalforum.com/index.php?threads/sars-cov-2-variants.584511/

Now, can the current vaccines in the future become useless? Truly useless, unlikely, but yes, in the future maybe newer variants will evade the vaccines more efficiently... at which point, though, we'll just modify the vaccines to include the new mutations. That's the beauty of the mRNA vaccines: they can be updated in a matter of 6 weeks, much more easily than the older technology for vaccines.

Sure, sure, it's much more intelligent to catch a potentially deadly virus, one that doesn't kill a large percentage of people infected (kills 1% to 2%) but does maim a lot of survivors (at least 20% of major organ damage in survivors, likely more) rather than taking a vaccine that has 0.0008% of serious complications. Yes, very intelligent. The Darwin Award Committee thanks you for your help.

Sure, but it's interesting to see that black men and Latino men who in majority are not subscribers to this movement, are also hesitant. The black community has historical precedent that makes them afraid of being experimented on. I do not know what prevents Latino men from accepting the vaccines. Maybe some sort of macho culture, "I'm strong, I don't need it"?

Maybe a way to reach men would be to appeal to their protective instincts, with an ad campaign highlighting that by accepting the vaccines, men will be protecting their loved ones - wives, children, parents, grandparents.

I think all the elites need to be injected with AstraZeneca....they should take one for the over population team...imagine the wealth that will be re-distributed
