Zelda (if I recall correctly) is an action game though - I'm thinking of the turn-based RPGs.

So you don't mind having to kill 10,000 level 1 goblins just to get to a high enough level to fight your first real enemy?

They aren't designed to waste time...they are designed to make profit on their monthly charges. Why else do you think most MMORPG games have the "grind" aspect in it? They know there will be few people that will be able to sit there the whole day leveling their characters. They know most people can only dedicate a few hours a night/day to playing. They want to keep you involved for as long as possible so you continue to make them money.

Very rarely will I play a game with a monthly fee on it for that exact reason. Some games I will just because they look incredible and I want to check it out. Most of the time I will play a FTP game instead....although I haven't had time to play any games lately.

There needs to be some sort of balance. I grew up with video games, played them all the time, but I also played every sport I could and would disappear for hours on my bike to go ride with friends.

I completely agree. I loved PvP in WoW.

I didn't. I actually quite enjoyed completing the quests in WoW when I played and more recently Diablo III.

Yeah...PvP in WoW was pretty funny. It was always fun trying to level and would get the random gank attempt. I remember one time leveling my warrior tank and 2 people tried to gank me. I had half health at the time and beat them both and had about a quarter of life left (had pots and all but was still a tough fight)

Planescape Torment and Fallout 1, best rpg's ever created.

And they're from the previous century.

Just throw in Star Wars Battlefront 2 and call it a day. That was the last pc game I bought back in 2005. Still the best game out there. You can have your CoDs, your Battlefields, your elves and trolls, etc.

Give me a good sports game and star wars. That is all.

I just don't care for all the other stuff out there. If its not baseball or football, it's got to be star wars. Tron is OK too.

Those battlefield games are cool, but to predictable for all the bells and whistles on it. Combat Arms & A.V.A we're good too. There was another game that was made by the guys who brought AVA, it was futuristic, but it like lasted a couple of months and disappeared. I think it was run by Fiji?????

There's an awful lot of RPG's out there and a great deal of them aren't like that.

Were you referring to any one in particular?

Star Wars Battle Front 2 was awesome. I played that game everyday before I had to get ready for school.

I agree, most of the newer RPG's do suck. Although I must say that Skyrim is a shining star... I am over 300 hours into it using 3 different toons.

A lot of RPGs have a strategy element to them. You could always keep your levels low if you want a challenge. In terms of story and characters, and sidequests RPGs are top of the hill.

    Final Fantasy 7 and Xenogears>>>>

The original PlayStation is easily the best system for RPGs. It literally has a couple of dozen classics.

I can't play most of the RPGs after 2001 or so. I haven't played a Final Fantasy since 10.

I agree, Chrono Trigger is to this day one of my all time favorite RPG's. Sadly I am so spoiled by modern graphics that I am not sure I could get into it again.

Skyrim was an excellent game also just like it's predecessor without all the leveling quirks and the fact that it can be modded added a great deal to both the graphics and the content. Probably the most visually stunning game I've ever played.

I agree. I have been playing video games since pong in the 70's and if I were to make a list of my favorite games of all time, Skyrim would be on my short list, and probably right at the top game. There are a lot of looong games out there, that just get repetitive and booring after like 60 hours... or less. But Skyrim just seems to hold my imagination... it keeps me wanting more... what is in the next cave... dungeon...

My favorite build is a stealthy assassin. I kill silently from the shadows with a bow but can quickly switch to sword and shield during melee.

Morrowind was my introduction to the series and I have been a big fan every since.

The best RPG's are more about skills than stats and more about tactics and problem solving than leveling up.

Don't tell that to the general crowd, they think that having different ways to kill things is "role play"

On the other hand if there isn't an evil of sorts to defeat what's the point?

No... not anywhere close - I haven't even played Skyrim yet so maybe it's a huge improvement, but you were talking about the series, and it's basically the "Grand Theft Auto" of fantasy-themed games - it's all graphics/flash and little to know substance, and basically just buys good reviews. I'm not a huge RPG fan either, but even if I was I couldn't see myself enjoying it - there's no depth of plot, all the characters are flat, combat is mediocre and unchallenging, etc - if the highlight of the game is the ability to wear a bunch of different suits of clothes and armor, or decorate your home with tons of different trinkets - well then it's basically just a Facebook "Farmville" style game with really good graphics, so no, please no.

It'll be the best game series in history, when Kirk Cameron's Avatar is the best film in history.

I lol'd. Thanks for confirming why I haven't (and probably will never) bother with it.

Well James Cameron's avatar was the most visibly stunning movie ever made. The game (and whole series for that matter) is entirely commercialized and shallow, and the graphics are really the only thing it has going for it. Hypothetically if it didn't have the graphics that it does, it would be one of the most boring and shallow games of all time, compared at least to a few other RPG games that I've played, or some older 16 bit era games which didn't have the graphics that Elder Scrolls does, but are much better in every other area

Games need to have either very good, skill-based gameplay, or a very deep and intriguing plot and characters to keep it interesting - this "Elder Scrolls" series unfortunately has neither - shallow characters with no real personalities, generic plot, and repetitive and generic gameplay which is more about walking from point A to point B, and fiddling with relatively useless junk in your 'inventory' - than any actual challenge or suspense. Not to mention most of the areas in the game are just recycled and virtually identical.

    1. If you haven't played it then you do not know.
    2. It's James Cameron, not Kirk Cameron that did Avatar, ya doink. :D
