So, here's the story. i was at my friends house last night playing some good old fashioned risj. I won, of course, but I digress. His nine year old boy asks me why I don't shave. I told him it's because shaving is a very uncomfortable thing to me and I'm allergic to some shaving creams. Then he asks us both why people shave. Neither of us could answer that question. So I put this question to you, how would you answer the question? How would you explain why men shave to a ten year old boy?
A man's beard is his pride. It's associated with aggression. When you shave off your beard, you are saying to the world "I will shave off my pride for the machine. There is nothing left to take here, please move on." On a more serious note, people shave off their beards originally to look less aggressive and more refined (since it takes effort to shave). Eventually it just became the norm, but those of us who are real men refuse to shave it off. Also, if your beard doesn't grow out well you have to get creative. I was blessed with a fairly full and even beard but some people grow a beard on half of their face or something and it doesn't look good, so you have to put some effort into it.
First of all at the risk of sounding stupid, what is risj? And second, I shave because my beard irritates my skin. Of course that could be interpreted as my beard doesn't like my face.
I shave because I think beards are gross, and more importantly so do most women. Likewise, if I see pit hair on a girl.
That's why I shave. If I were alone on a deserted Island and had a razor, I wouldn't shave a hair. My "Capture Australian at all Costs" tactic has never failed me. We've been playing Cards Against Humanity lately and it's not bad ... and very un-PC.
For me personally, I hate facial hair. Despite being 21, I like the fact that my body seems to age slowly and without facial hair, I look sixteen or seventeen. I don't want to look like a regular adult, and I'll keep shaving to maintain that.
I shave because I don't use goop in a can and $20 cartridge razors. If you haven't already, I'd suggest trying some proper shaving cream, a double edge or straight razor, a badger hair brush, and a block of alum. Once you get some skill you rarely nick yourself, and it's a very luxurious feeling. I look forward to shaving, it's not a chore anymore. And I have notoriously irritable skin, especially on my neck. To each their own I guess.

I cannot stand facial hair, at least on myself. I shave daily, regardless of what is on the social agenda and even on camping trips will endeavor to bring a mobile electric shaver. Maybe once or twice I've grown a moustache, but never a beard. Why shave? Well for one thing, statistically men who shave daily live longer on average. The scientific basis being, those who are more inclined to value personal grooming extend this to other aspects of a lifestyle including diet and exercise, etc. For me the only valid reason I can give is that I disdain facial hair on my person.
There are a few reasons to shave: 1) I'm bearded, but I shave my neck--I find neck hair to be itchy. 2) If you are military/fire fighter, you may need to shave so that your breathing equipment seals. 3) If you can't grow a decent beard. 4) Some women don't like beards. 5) Some bosses don't like beards. - - - Updated - - - IMHO, quality women like beards..... but then again, I'm bearded.
Well some women like them no doubt but its been my experience that most of them tell me they think they are gross. Perhaps we should have a poll of only females and see what they say.
Well, I didn't say most women like beards, I said quality women like beards. I don't doubt that most women don't like beards (I had a beard back when I was single). Quality women are a different subset of women. I stand firm with this statement, as my wife likes beards, hence, I believe that quality women like beards.
I was going for a interview to be on a Generals staff and the CSM wanted to talk to me in private. Once I entered his office he asked that I be seated and handed me a cup of coffee. Some small talk went by and after everything said and done he leaned into me and asked in a quite manner.....why grow something on your upper lip that naturally grows on your butt? In return I asked him if he shaves his butt.... Anyways, since retiring I have a trimmed beard but shave my neck. Seems to fit here in Colorado.
