We need Universal Background Checks for all gun purchases.

    why?

because today in most states, convicted criminals, illegal aliens and severally mentally ill can buy guns through private sales.

if you don't perform a background check, you have no idea if you are about to sell a gun to a nice guy or someone wanted for murder or raping a child.

No one, who cares about their country or the safety of our people, would sell a gun without doing a background check on the person they may sell a gun to.

I propose the following Universal Background Check system:

-all gun sales will require a background check.

-NICS checks will keep a record of the serial # of the gun, the name of the seller, and the date of the transaction.

ATF will perform random stings across the country, upon internet, newspaper, magazine private gun sellers.

this info will be accessable to police with a warrant, ordered by a judge whenever a gun is found used in a crime. If there is no record of a NICS check being performed for that gun, and the seller did not report the gun stolen, the seller will face jail time and a fine.

ATF will also perform random stings across the country, upon internet, newspaper, magazine private gun sellers.

The buyer will also face extra jail time and a fine, for having purchased a gun without getting a NICS check.

What is wrong with such a proposal?

The left will have a bigger problem than the right with this. This proposal doesn't accomplish what the anti gunners want, which is registration disguised as UBCs. No politician is going to use their political clout to come up short on their real goal. There will be no financial backing for this.
The right only wants solutions that guarantee the gun violence stats will significantly drop. This ain't it.

Yep, a criminal stealing a gun or getting one off a friend will run right down to the local LGS and get a background check.

I would like to see fewer innocent victims of all violence including gun violence. I am not willing to restrict ones ability to defend their families by any means though. Any registration is a pathway to restricting firearms if future politics leads that way.

Here's the biggest problem with your antigun proposals. You change them every two hours. Just like politicians. That's why no one will ever take you seriously. Or politicians.

Not really, but anyone who supports the 2nd should see that an amendment is the only way forward. You people will not stop.

You still haven't read my semi serious proposal in the last thread have you? I'd be willing to wager more NRA types would support that than anything else. I am the NRA.

Let's call that some wriggle room;) It's an idea I had many years ago for UBC that IMO addresses the concerns of both sides. Well,,, the stated concerns anyway. Keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and insane without trampling the rights of gun owners. As I stated in the last thread the left would never go along with it even though it addresses thier stated concerns.
The wriggle room is desired because I haven't articulated it in years. Could be flaws in what I wrote. I'm open minded enough to allow dissent and more educated opinions to persuade change in my own. So yes, it's only semi serious because I'm a gun owner, not a tyrant.

Or we could put mandatory minimums on violent crime and see gun violence go down 70% in a few years.

But no let's keep going after the guns themselves, making more people criminals, and hire a few million extra ATF agents for these "random stings".

So how will that make criminals run down to their local LGS to get a background check?

Also they must serve their entire sentence with no time off for anyrhing. If they cause trouble you add time.

Heres whats wrong. Wtf good is a background check when liberals let criminals go if they say they are sorry. These mother(*)(*)(*)(*)ing scumbag liberals here in ma let the scum go who supplied the gun to the boston marathon bombers who used that gun to kill a police officer...so ...WTF good are your useless gun control ideas if the same leftists who want gun control are yhe very people letting the worst offenders back out into society? So far none of you leftists have answered this.

Is it your goal to restrict firearms, or is it your goal to reduce gun violence?

Then you might want to go to the states that already have background checks and registration and see what the stats are on legal firearms being used for crime.

If there was a way to reduce gun crime without new gun control laws, would you give up on your gun control ideas?
