We are approaching half of the US population collecting benefits for not working and feel the other half that work are not doing enough to help them . Almost 65 percent of welfare recipients report that they are not actively seeking work .The federal government funds 126 separate programs targeted towards low-income people, 72 of which provide either cash or in-kind benefits to individuals

We are at the tipping point were the working half begin to realize they are on that treadmill, unable to gain any ground. Workers are putting in 45 hours, then 50 hours, and up 80 hours and trying to put something away for that rainy day but increased taxes evaporate the nest egg. And have to ask WHY work.

Welfare family of two children in Connecticut, where benefits are worth $38,761; a person leaving welfare for work would have to earn $21.33 per hour to be better off. And in New Jersey, a worker would have to make $20.89 to beat welfare.
Nationwide, a study found that the wage-equivalent value of benefits for a mother and two children in Hawaii was $60,590. WHY work.

I think your wage equivalents are low, considering that the wage earner has to find a way to be insured under O care.

Well not quite true. We do have 47% of the population not paying any Federal taxes, but not all of them aren't working. A good percent of them are making below the poverty line and there for don't pay Federal taxes and are eligible for some assistance.

I have a question for you. You can answer it or not.

For all of those people out there that are receiving government benefits of any kind, can you proove we have enough qualified jobs to cover them with equivalent pay?

Are you willing to pay for relocation/training of those people to where the jobs are?

Are you willing to pay for the increased crime/poverty effects that would occur if we simply cut government assistance w/o helping these people learn and get ahead?

A couple of days ago the Huffington Post reported on the AOL news that there are 8 states that welfare pays above $20.00 per hour.

i don't know any numbers, but the idea that half of the US isn't working seems ridiculous to me...collecting benefits doesn't necessarily mean u don't work...why don't u provide some links that prove that half of the US isn't working if u base your argument on that assumption

Just more of the simplistic and disengenuous talking points you hear on every rightwing radio show.

Lumping ALL Government largesse into "welfare"....which means including Social Security and Medicare.

Yet they don't say that...because the GOP needs the votes of the elderly who don't think of themselves on "welfare".

Plus the bullsh** "Half the country doesn't pay taxes"....excluding FICA or state and local taxes, of course.

Same crap you hear Sean Hannity say 150X a week on his show...over and over and over and over and over and over.

So stop working, start collecting welfare, and let us know how that works out for you.

There is no incentive for a lazy person to work, that's why Obama is still in the White House. A large majority of the population has found that entitlements beat work any day. And illegals milk the system at a rate of $2,000 per every US household per year.

Families of welfare freeloaders know their unmarried teen daughters can get about $40,000 a year for dropping out of high school and having a baby. They run scams where if the Welfare Queens allow their kids to be neglected---then their friends or relatives can take the kids over and get more benefit money.

There is no incentive for the lazy poor to work.

Wow... so many unsubstantiated claims in one post. Where does one start?

Where are you getting this information? It appears to assume that EVERYONE who is receiving welfare receives every benefit that is offered. That's simply not true and taints everything you've said with the stink of deliberate disinformation. It also seems to assume that ALL welfare recipients don't work. That's not true either.

So please provide the source of those ludicrous claims. I'm assuming it's some boilerplate talking point list from some right-wing aligned "organization" that is making the rounds on the far right's inbred information circle.

This is the biggest weakness to Socialism and communism.

I'd much rather have a job and making more money so I can get other things I like such as DVDs, computer games, computers, cars, motorcycles, MP3 players, travel places. good books.

You really can't do that on the government's dime because they give you only a small amount of money, just to survive. You really can't afford other things that I mentioned on the government's dime.

Plus I'd feel much better about myself if I could take care of myself and be able to make my own choices. When you are on the government's dime, they have to investigate everything and you need to ask them permission to do anything.

And I'm sick and tired of that.

In short, work gives you a certain amount of freedom to do things when you have more money. Government only gives you a bare minimum amount of money and you really don't have any real freedom.

That's why I'd much rather work.

Why do so many people think there need to be ready-made jobs to be filled by little human cogs? People who can't get a regular job can find constructive ways of supporting themselves (self-employment) rather than becoming welfare sponges.

Yep, the government does not exist to provide people with jobs, that is up to the individuals to work out for themselves.

Liberals believe that everyone should be handed everything, kind of like communism where you were simply placed in your job when you were ready.

Conservatives do not want that at all. They want people to improve their skillsets, join the real workforce, and continue to get better paying jobs and careers, not work for minimum wage for the rest of their lives. When you take pride in your job and become skilled at what you do it has a high probability of carrying over into other aspects of your life such as how morals, values, and ethics.

That is what conservatives want. We believe that anyone has it in them to make whatever they want out of their lives whereas liberals think that the poor people are completely helpless and cannot do anything unless the democrats do it for them.

Now who do you think actually has more respect for people?

Most of these benefits are paid for through debt, once the "developing" world presents real economic alternatives to western bonds and corporations, the tax increases and resultant flight of wealth will make people realize just how bad the welfare to work ratio has gotten and then (finally) we will probably see something give because the Cadillac supply will be threatened.
