Geert Wilders (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈxɪːrt ˈʋɪldərs] or [ˈʝɪːrt ˈβ̞ɪldərs], born 6 September 1963) is a Dutch right wing[1][2][3][4][5] politician and the founder and leader of the Party for Freedom (Partij voor de Vrijheid – PVV), the fourth-largest political party in the Netherlands.[6][7] Wilders is the Parliamentary group leader of his party in the Dutch House of Representatives. In the formation in 2010 of the current Rutte cabinet, a minority cabinet of VVD and CDA, he actively participated in the negotiations, resulting in a "support agreement" (gedoogakkoord) between the PVV and these parties, but withdrew his support in April 2012, citing disagreements with the cabinet on proposed budget cuts.[8] Wilders is best known for his criticism of Islam, summing up his views by saying, "I don't hate Muslims, I hate Islam". Wilders' views regarding Islam have made him a controversial figure in the Netherlands and abroad.

Raised a Roman Catholic, Wilders left the church at his coming of age. His travels to Israel as a young adult, as well as to neighbouring Arab countries, helped form his political views. Wilders worked as a speechwriter for the conservative-liberal People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie – VVD), and later served as parliamentary assistant to party leader Frits Bolkestein from 1990 to 1998. He was elected to the Utrecht city council in 1996, and later to the House of Representatives. Citing irreconcilable differences over the party's position on the accession of Turkey to the European Union, he left the VVD in 2004 to form his own party, the Party for Freedom.

Wilders has campaigned to stop what he views as the "Islamisation of the Netherlands". He compares the Quran with Mein Kampf and has campaigned to have the book banned in the Netherlands.[10][11][12] He advocates ending immigration from Muslim countries,[10][13] and supports banning the construction of new mosques.[14] Wilders was a speaker at the Facing Jihad Conference held in Jerusalem in 2008, which discussed the dangers of jihad, and has called for a hard line against what he called the "street terror" exerted by minorities in Dutch cities.[15] His controversial 2008 film about his views on Islam, Fitna, received international attention. He has been described in the media as populist[16][17][18] and labeled far-right,[19][20] though this is disputed by other observers.[16][21][22] Wilders, who has refused to align himself with other European far-right leaders such as Jean-Marie Le Pen and Jörg Haider, views himself as a right-wing liberal and has expressed concern of being "linked with the wrong rightist fascist groups."[23]

Wilders was banned from entering the United Kingdom between 12 February 2009 and 13 October 2009 by the Labour government, the Home Office saying his presence would be a "threat to one of the fundamental interests of society".[24] The ban was overturned after Wilders appealed[25] and he visited the UK in October 2009,[26] and again in March 2010 to show his film. In January 2009, the Amsterdam Court of Appeal ordered Wilders' prosecution for "incitement to hatred and discrimination".[27] Wilders was acquitted of these charges on 23 June 2011.[28]

This man could tell Australia about Islam, Muslims in general...will he be permitted a visa.....

Can't see why not. I don't see a difference between him and the Imams that are let in to preach the same hatred only in the name of Islam.

Some of us in our society need to take heed of the old saying.... Can't have your cake and eat it too !

I think maybe the approach will be to stop public unrest and risk to person. I do see your point but I think, maybe, they will attempt to stop him anyway.

How very Australian that would be. Imams preach their hatred, but we won't let a differing point of view in. I say Imams, but let me say not all of them, well not publicly anyway. I personally would like to see none of these hatred spewing fools come into this country.

However if he is denied it will stink of hypocrisy at its highest level. The bleeding hearts rejoice .

Oh I agree, the only problem is, that yes I am cynical of the government from both sides. I guess it will be all academic, until the action occurs.

Do you need Wilders to tell you first hand about muslims?

Hell we have enough in oz that we should now know about them from experience, dont you think.

Most muslims i have met especially through work are honest hard working people, i haven't got a problem with them.

That there are fanatics amoungst them doesn't seem that strange to me, i think you will find fanatics in most groups, religious or otherwise.

Prosecute the trouble makers like any other matter concerning violence, there are bad eggs in every basket.

We don't need some Dutch idiot to "enlighten" us about Islam, we've had Muslims in this country for decades.

But it would be ridiculous not to allow him into Australia just because some people might be offended by his views.

All this nonsense has already drawn far too much attention to him.

Would anyone even have known or cared about him coming here if they hadn't seen his face plastered across the media because of this visa nonsense? I doubt it.

Let him in, just don't listen to his nonsense.

Same for the stupid religious crazies.

So long as they're not terrorists or promoting violence or whatnot, obviously.

Probably not we have denied entry to holocaust deniers and radical Imams before today so why should this guy be privileged - free speech does not give you the right to spew hate

In an attempt to understand muslims and Islam, I have been studying via the internet various aspects of Islam, and I for one, would be interested to hear what Gilders has to say, first hand. If he breaks any of our laws, then he can be
arrested and charged, and held in custody and given a fair trial. I would find it odd if the Government of Australia
refuses him entry, as this would be seen by many to be "pandering" to the muslim community. If muslims have to
obey their Imams and if any muslim wants to protest, then they have to seek the approval of their Imam. Therefore Imams are obviously granting the right to protest all over the world. If Imams are doing this, then surely, we as Australian citizens, have the right to listen to what Gilders has to say. Innocent til proven guilty I would think....

Well we have blocked Imams before so I guess your attempt to justify putting "whites" in the victim role is a FAIL

Australia generally follows British precedents and Wilders was allowed entry to the UK after he won an appeal and the asylum and immigration tribunal overturned the ruling to deny him entry in 2009 on the condition that he would not promote his film. Wilders' party is losing ground in the Netherlands and it lost a half of its parliamentary seats in recent national elections and his entry to Australia would make no difference in the nation's race relations.

I think that the entire world has a serious problem with the Islamic Militia...notice I didnt say muslims...
I dont think there is an issue with normal muslims, they are just like normal catholics and normal Jehovahs
Witnesses...leave them alone and you wouldnt know they existed.
However, having said that, unless muslim leaders are prepared to sit down and discuss ways and
means of combatting the Islamic Militia, then the IM will continue with its violence and mayhem worldwide.
The core to this problem is the violence in the Koran, which the Islamic Militia use as a reason to hate
everyone. They interpret this violence deliberately as a reason to be violent.
I saw some muslims playing Aussie Rules on tv the other nite...terrific...
Interpretation is a strange thing...eg the JW say that Adam and Eve were married...they were not...
no-where in the Bible does it say they were married...but thats another story...
