I dont know why anyone would want to "re-fight" WWII, just as I come across Americans who keep re-fighting the Civil War. Having been to Germany 3 times in my life: 1st time a couple of years after the end of WWII as a little kid where my father was in the Occupational Forces and involved with the Berlin Airlift, 2nd time in the 50's as a 12 yo, and last time as a young GI. I had many opportunities to sit & drink in the gasthaus' with German men who had fought in WWII, most claiming to have fought on the Eastern front (so as not to admit killing Americans), but I met 1 guy who admitted to fighting on the Western front...he had a good opinion of we American GI's and told us many war stories over the months I knew him. I also met many young German men my age (1st generation Baby Boomers following the war) and could never see therm as being the fierce fighting force of Nazi Germany. They were 'tamed' and actually somewhat of a disappointment to what I expected, including some in their Luftwaffe (German Air Force). I really loved the Germany that I spent time in over the years as the ppl were jovial, fun loving, and accepted us GI's as we were in a low-military population area of Germany. And when I was over there 20 yrs after WWII, there was still an "anti-Nazi" mentality among the German ppl and Neo-Nazis were an extreme minority. But as time has gone by, I can see why there would be an uprising just as after WWI when the German ppl were humiliated, and now the great Germany of Uber Alles is not so now as a military power, altho an economic power in the EU. But warfare is hell and ppl change during the stress of life threatening, family killed, situations...saw it also during Viet Nam when the civilian population was looked at as sub-human as women & children had bombs strapped to them and killed/maimed American soldiers when the soldiers often offered kindness originally! I can believe the horror and inhuman actions of both the WWII Germans as well as the Russians who justified it from the German atrocities in their country. But the ugliness of sub-animalistic behavior during war is scary that ppl could be that cruel! So dont glorify war, as the ONLY glory in war is winning and maintaining your country's way of life..nothing more.
Hi OverDrive, That's because at the end of the war, most of the original Weapon SS had died. At the end, the army was nothing the likes it had been when it was at start of the war: a highly professional and extremely disciplined army: However, the US and UK thought it was going to be a cakewalk to Germany, but got shocked when they stumbled upon the battle-hardened "SS Leibstandarte AH" (Hitler's Praetorian Guard) divisions during the battle of the Bulge. Outnumbered and outgunned, they put a hell of a fight on there and blazed through the lines, without any airforce covering them (which the US and UK did have) as the Luftwaffe was grounded since fuel was scarce. The Germans only lost on the Western front against the US and UK because the full of their tanks ran out and came to a stand still, as the Soviets had taken the oilfields in the East. If the Germans would have won on the Western front, they would have secured Antwerp harbor and it could have turned the war around.
I must admit that as a 11-12 yo boy in Germany, finding WWII souvenirs including digging up a tripod machine gun (which Army Ordinance disabled & plugged and let us keep for our army games we played in the Black Forest) was a main part of our lives..there were still areas marked Off Limits due to not being yet de-mined. Lost a couple of friends to being blown up by discovering an old ammo dump as well as mines. But we all had much respect for the WWII German Wehrmacht, as you said their discipline and skills as a force of war. Was impressive to boys of our age and unlike the American Cowboys & Indians game where no one wanted to be a losing Indian, many of us chose to be Germans in replays of WWII. It's amazing what they did with technology and even building machines of war while fighting on 2 fronts!
I can see a new nationalism occurring in Germany with the large influx of immigrants who will never assimilate into German culture, which is very unique and based around drinking 'beer,' a no-no to Muslims! It is also occurring in the US to an extent!
Yes, the Germans were about 50 - 75 years ahead of time on the rest of the world... check it out: ============================== ============================== ============================== ============================== ======= The Germans had the first jet-fighters, the ME-262. The Americans were quite surprised when Germany was conquered and they entered the airfields where they encountered the planes and asked "how does this plane fly, where are the propellors??" "What was that? What the hell was that?" ============================== ============================== ============================== ============================== ======= They were the first to have rockets in the world, which of course was an amazing technological achievement. After WW II, the US took dozens of V-2's and shipped them back including German scientists for their own military. ============================== ============================== ============================== ============================== ======= The Germans even had the first prototype stealth-bomber, the Horten-Ho 229: Which after the war, would become the B-2 bomber: ============================== ============================== ============================== ============================== ======= And....
What caused their advancement in technology? It wasnt fear of the Fuhrer! Altho Germany was known for having great universities. And it couldnt have just been $$$ thrown at the efforts. What prompted that great leap in technology??
The Germans also designed the MP44 Sturmgewehr (Storm-rifle) which also was way ahead of it's time: Which after the war would become the.... "Russian" AK-47 Basically, all the ideas and designs were stolen from the Germans after war....
Upon the launch of Operation Barbarossa, 3 million Christian German soldiers wore a belt-buckle reading "Gott mit Uns" (God with Us), while taking on the godless communists in the East...
Didn't catch that post, but I hope he is right, because otherwise Germany won't last that long. The problem nowadays is that Germany is still occupied since WW II, and has over 100 US military bases on it's soil with 30.000 - 40.000 troops stationed there, which I think won't let them rise up again. Besides that, laws have been put in place to find out the truth there regarding WW II. Have you watched the documentary yet? You can also find it here in high-def.
The reasoning for the American troops is not because of the worry of another German uprising w/feckless Merkel and the pacifist German ppl's and also being embedded in the EU, but to support NATO. When I was over there in the late 60's, the radar site I was stationed at was NATO support and was turned over to the Luftwaffe after I left around 1972.
Have a read.. http://www.veteranstoday.com/2011/06/05/germany-still-under-the-control-of-foreign-powers/ Those bases and soldiers aren't there for nothing. Not only to support NATO, but also to keep the Germans in check. Besides that, all media and schooling there is under US control till 2099.
Sounds like the 1949 German constitution has checks in there and for sure following WWI and WWII there was a fear and took years for NATO to relax their hold and include Germany. Now, the US is picking up much of Germany's defense freight while they spend their $$$ on social programs!
There's more to the story than that... scroll down a bit on the page and you can see the episodes, which tells the story of WW II from German perspective and why they fought.
Mihail Kalashnikov Admits German "Help" To Create The AK-47 Rifle Mihail Kalasnikov is admitting he was "helped" by the German inventor and arms maker Hugo Schmeisser to create the AK-47 assault rifle http://transsylvaniaphoenix.blogspot.nl/2009/02/michail-kalashnikov-admits-german-help.html
It may well be so. If so, then -Danke schon, Herr Schmeisser. ==== = = = = But perhaps the principle idea may be of Kalashnikov/. It may well be - " Schmeisser helped solve the problem of cold stamping parts."
Tell me please, Is there anything said about Mein Kampf? ....and about this in particular: You seen this movie. You should know that.
We already discussed that; no need to bring it up again because you just found out mr. Kalashnikov copied his rifle from the MP44 Sturmgewehr.
Weapons Wehrmacht was the best. Perhaps Schmeisser invented the AK-47. But do not turn up your nose too high. The world's first machine has been invented Russian gunsmith in 1916. I noticed a lot of hate mongers were angry over history. We forget who tells history. If you tell my history to others, you will include your personal bias. If you happen to like me, you will be fun to read and kind. If you hate my guts, you will lash out to to try to get others to hate me. I saw in Germany both the good done by Hitler and the bad. I do not excuse him for the war. He created a war machine. There is no way to claim he got attacked by Poland. Hitler loved to tell other countries what to do. If some Germans lived in Poland, he wanted the place back in German hands. I can see his point of view. But not when you send dive bombers and tanks to try to take an area back. Too many died at the hands of his military. And by engaging in war, he forced other countries with treaties to also get involved. War is not easy. I personally enjoyed the history told by General Remer. But I like to read all sides trying to find out how each side felt. I went to Germany expecting to find the people disgusting. But I came to enjoy their company. This trip by me was some years past the end of WW2. People who get angry over the history of the Nazis should perhaps stop reading history of any area. It is also interesting to read history from the Russians side. They also know a story and want their story told.
I suggest to the Nazi lovers, you will not get a warm welcome. We have some people like me who as a child had family fighting Hitler. We recall the destruction of too many cities. Paris was saved by the French not defending it. But had they defended it, it would have been in ruins.
Not only the weapons, but basically whole Germany was the better back in the day, because the Russian people were held down by communism. Communism = not Russian; it is a foreign 'entity' which had taken over Russia in the form of Bolshevik Jews. However, it seemed the Soviet soldiers were quite surprised once they entered Germany and saw all the beautiful and ancient architecture, castles, wonderful housing and stuff... I've seen a former Soviet soldier tell in some vid about WW II when they crossed the border, saw it all and realised "we are now fighting in the gardens of Germany..." It must have looked like Asgard to them compared to what the Soviets had back in the day. And indeed, check out how Germany looked like, before all their cities were bombed to bits: You can't say that doesn't look amazing.
Exactly. The Germans only attacked a city which was defended by a military force, which is legitimate according to international rules of war. (because otherwise every military would hide itself in every city during wartime of course) Furthermore, the Germans sought out military targets as much as possible. This in contrary to the British, who preferred to bomb as much civilian targets (61 cities!) as possible during raids in the night. Raids in the night because they couldn't get into German airspace during daytime.. The US army didn't agree with British at all at first for doing that and saw it as useless also to bomb civilians, but later also took part in the so called "Saturation bombings" with their "Mighty 8th" bomber squadrons. These were warcrimes of unimaginable proportions of which the Allies have never been held accountable for, neither have they ever apologized for it.
