What kind of (*)(*)(*)(*)ing retard would give a 5 year old kid a rifle as a gift?
We need to realize that too many people have no business owning or using guns and that we need to create much more strict gun laws and treat owning or using a gun with the sort of regulations that apply to being able to drive a car.
Rigorous training in use and safety. No one under age may use or own guns. Having to pass a series of practical and psychological tests on a periodic basis to be licensed to use a gun. Requiring different levels of licensing for different types of guns, with some gun types completely banned. Gun show sales eliminated or highly regulated.
Very strict penalties for circumventing or breaking the laws.
What we have now is a jury-rigged abomination of laws, largely written by nra lobbyists, that allow an endless, irresponsible abuse of guns by incompetent people.

    What's wrong with giving a gun as a gift to a 5 year-old? I got a rifle when I was 7. Of course, I didn't have access to it until I was a bit older- 10 perhaps.

Agreed Mac, more progressive drivel. Punish society as a whole and never the person responsible....or for progressive utopia, both.

Me, the Adults should be in jail and let the law abiding citizens move on with life.

Disturbing, on so many different levels.

I don't even know how to comment. Other than to say the adults/parents in this household should be held criminally responsible (personal opinion, obviously).

    Godspeed the little girl.

Wayne LaPierre will be along shortly to tell us that the only way to stop 5 year olds with guns is to arm 2 year olds as well.

I started out my daughter shooting a BB at age 5.

At age 6, she was shooting a Ruger 10/22 rifle.

By age 7 or 8, she was shooting a 22LR handgun and a 410 shotgun.

By age 13 she was shooting all by handguns, rifles and shotguns in my collection.

She is 18 now and knows how to handle a firearm properly and has great respect for them.

All my guns are locked up and as a child, she only had access to my guns while at the range under my supervision.

I'm a responsible parent and gun owner.

Prove it. Show me how Lapierre has made any such statement in the past to justify your ignorance with this 5 year old or any 5 year old.

So then what control would have prevented this?

We already do, significantly more than guns as a matter of fact.

Doubtfully any. I still support background checks, but this is not a good example of why.

Well one could argue that a law against irresponsible parents having guns in the house would have prevented this, but good luck enforcing that.

Background checks don't prevent bad parenting and lack of common sense.

Another day, another progressive pretending to care about a kid he doesn't know in order to further a left-wing goal of disarming the country. Yawn.

OH RLY? I wonder why car fatalities including drunk driving fatalities have dramatically decreased since the laws were considerably strengthened in the 70's.

Yep, I 100% believe the mom should be charged with negligent homicide. And at the very least she should lose custody of the 5 year old.

We don't live in a bubble and our kids are not our property. Every decision we make with them affects others. Those who make bad decisions need to start being penalized for such.

This has exactly ZERO to do with guns and everything to do with parenting, or lack thereof.

Significantly MORE? can a 16 year old kid legally buy a gun? Can a released murderer legally buy a car?

Besides....what "law" would have PREVENTED this drunken moron from having his 9 year old kid chauffeur him to the store?

    Actually yes they can.

Laws don't prevent, they discourage. By your logic we shouldn't have laws against murder or theft because they still happen regardless.

Are you able to give the keys to a five your old and then they could go start your car? Not are "you" allowed to, but can it happen even with a drivers test and training. Yes, "you" can and only idiots would and do. But you have no right to own a car or be allowed to drive, you do have a right to protect yourself, and the best way to do so is with firearms.

    you are right, and wrong.

We don't need more laws, we just simply need to enforce the laws we have now.

And in this case, the law which should have been more strictly enforced has to do with negligent parenting, not gun control.

Stop screaming "gun" for a moment and listen to a rational argument.

If this mom had left her two children in the backyard where there was a pool and the 5 year old pushed the 2 year old and she drowned ; would you be calling for a ban on swimming pools, or background checks or anything of the sort?

I'm not interested in arguing with you about guns, so if you won't engage in a rational discussion, don't bother responding.
