Since it has existed everywhere throughout history, its existence in any one set of laws demonstrates nothing. You need something else to support your point.
the bible is full of fiction written by bronze age goat herders, who stole most of their material from previous religions.
Support my point that Jesus said murder is wrong? Seriously? - - - Updated - - - They were apparantly very good writers to create the best selling book of all time. Not bad for goat herders. What have you done with your life?
It helps when you take over the largest power in Europe in the 5th Century ...that proselytizes by force of conquest....first in Europe and later in Africa and North and South America.
All these 'commandments' were in operation in civilisations earlier than the Hebrews. They simply copied them. The Hebrews took many things, like the health regulations and family relationships, again from earlier and contemporary. The early part of the Bible is made up of earlier stories, adapted by themselves. You really should do more reading and study.
Not bad for goat herders huh? - - - Updated - - - Well why don't you appeal to popularity and write the best selling book of all time. Certainly you are smarter than some goat herders aren't you?
why? I'm not a writer. of course I am. I know that burning bushes and snakes can't talk. I know that the world has never flooded. I know that zombies only exist in the movies.
where did I admit that? I don't credit the authors. I shake my head at the readers. not where you think
You said: And, I'M saying that picking a law that exists everywhere throughout history does NOT support your idea.
I have studied plenty. Most major religions share similar components but does that automatically make them false? What proof are you basing that on? Did you ever stop to consider the possibility that all religions are basically the same because it's all the same God? People with your limited vision are frustrating. - - - Updated - - - Not my idea. I said the NT condemns the action of murder. That is a simple true or false statement. It is irrelevant if everyone else condemns the action also because I never claimed they didn't.
OK - I thought you were defending some notion about consistency between the OT and the NT. If not, fine.
One might notice that the religions of the world throughout history are NOT alike - and not alike in some fundamental ways. The Greek and Roman pantheon certainly does not match Christianity. Plus, the Near East had numerous religions involving pantheons of various characteristics. One can see numerous other ideas through Africa, Asia, South America, etc. You can not possibly pitch these as "basically the same". In fact, that matches something very different - the different societies of mankind who created these religions and instigated change in them as they evolved over time.
Most major religions share the same components. 1. A divine creator 2. A heaven and earth 3. An afterlife
Who said that makes them false? What it does do is show that the Bible is simply a book which is not inspired by any god. Much is simply taking ideas that are already in operation and adapting them for their own purpose. They are very similar because they all come from the original source and have been 'localised' over millenia. Religion started because man could not understand what we understand today. Man devised a superior being because he had no answer. We know far more now and no-one has ever produced evidence of a superior being. As for having a limited view? That's hilarious, coming from you. Have you actually studied the OT? Do you know that Israel is often called God's servant (singular - NATION)? Isaiah refers to Israel as the 'Suffering Servant' - Not Jesus. Israel suffered for being Jahweh's people and still do. The Jews believe that when their Messiah comes the whole world will accept him, and will recognise the suffering of the Jewish nation down the centuries. 600 years before the Rabbi was born the Jews knew this. Then Christianity came along and decided to adjust the OT to suit their beliefs. And Islam came along and did the same. If John had a vision, why not Mohammed? Even the Book of Revelation is basically Jewish - except the first 3 chapters.. Christianity has taken images from the OT and added Jesus to these images.
Creation myths as strange as the bible: http://listverse.com/2014/01/11/10-creation-myths-as-strange-as-the-bible/
Well when science can come up with a realistic theory for creation let us know. - - - Updated - - - And why would God create things man cannot envision?
But you're saying it was a meteor crash that caused the flood, not God and rain. So God didn't inspire the story or them to write it, they made it up then. Using a god to fill in the gap of what they didn't know. And if the flood occurred that quickly, no ark was built and no animals came 2x2 to get on board.
"Envision"? No, that's not the issue. The argument I get is in the form of objecting to the findings of science. The argument goes that science is wrong, and god just diddled what we see in order to make it look like what's in the bible. So, if the argument is "young earth", the "answer" to millions of years old photons from other galaxies is that god made them in flight. If the argument is creationism, the "answer" is that god made the fossils and put them in the ground to fool nonbelievers. etc. And, none of these arguments is backed by evidence - the very basis of logical investigation of our physical universe.
