Well, there's no wonder what the outcome was likely to be of this feral child; these people have warped minds. According to the school, if anyway was going to do this, it would be him. My thoughts are with the families and the victims.
So...Richard The Last would rather see 12,979 innocent children, brutally gunned down then re-examine the 2'nd Amendment. Good to know. Have a nice day. <as I slowly back towards the door>
I feel like saying we'd be sacrificing the 2nd Amendment is what President Obama called a 'false choice'. We can absolutely have reforms that make it more difficult to access guns for the crazies while respecting law-abiding hunters, etc.
Not exactly accurate. You need to read back through the posts. If you want to make statements about me at least make them correct.
Just remember the Second Amendment has nothing to do with hunting. I do agree there needs to be some way to keep those with mental health issues from getting guns.
Right, it has to do with the right to bare arms. That being said, while the 2nd Amendment guarantees a right to bare arms, it does not infringe on the government's ability to regulate firearms. I've long been a proponent of the Swiss approach to gun laws, with a slight alteration with respect to mandatory military service. Instead of that, I'd have mandatory firearms training and screening say, every 2-4 years.
How many other societies have these mass shootings? How many other societies have easy access to firearms? Yes, the kid was probably mentally unbalanced and yes, that occurs all around the world. But the mass shootings are happening HERE in America and they are happening on an evermore FREQUENT basis. So the combination is what is DEADLY. Mentally unbalanced people WITHOUT access to proper healthcare COMBINED with a society that GLORIFIES guns and gun violence. If you want to address this issue then it means RAISING TAXES to provide better mental health care AND it means shutting down the NRA Gun Culture of Death and Hollywood's addiction of movies that glorify gun violence because those of the sources of the societal problem. We do NEED a NATIONAL GUN REGISTRY and it needs to be able to connect with a Pharma Registry of EVERYONE on medications for serious mental health conditions. The mentally unbalanced do NOT have a "right" to put the lives of everyone else in danger. They are a danger to themselves and to society and as such their individual rights to own firearms and privacy are superceded by everyone else's right to life. Time for us all to grow up and deal with this like adults. The NRA is going to DEMAND that there must be "more guns" and "armed teachers" at schools. That is the same load of bovine feces that they spout after every school shooting. It has never worked and it will never work either. Let's stop pretending that "guns are the answer" when they clearly are part of the problem and not the solution. A National Gun Registry with a link to a Pharma registry of Rx's for mental health meds is the way to make sure that We the People can identify and keep track of the threats to ourselves. We do it with sex offenders. Why can't we do the same thing with those who are a danger to the lives of our children and ourselves?
not sure you could, it's hard to prove yourself crazy to get the not guilty by inanity verdict, but it's also hard to prove yourself sane as no one wants to risk one not being sane when it comes to guns...
"The mentally unbalanced do NOT have a "right" to put the lives of everyone else in danger. They are a danger to themselves and to society and as such their individual rights to own firearms and privacy are superceded by everyone else's right to life." you want the government to have access like that to your medical records? I don't think that is a good move either the best we could do is ban certain guns, and tax ammo if we did this to one constitutional right, then they could do the same with freedom of religion and speech and even go after the press besides, this would just keep people that need help from seeking help
We do this all the time. Men who beat their wives have to forfeit their guns. Pedophiles who prey on children forfeit their privacy. We passed these laws to protect the innocent. We can and must do the same to protect the innocent from the mentally unstable. And no, their privacy right is not violated because it is not a "public" database. It is a Law Enforcement tool that is used to ensure that guns are not in the hands of the mentally unstable just like they are not in the hands of wife beaters.
we didn't have these frequent mass shootings 40 years ago and access to guns was just the same then as it is now probably easier so something is going on in society in our population you figure that out and you solve the problem without violating constitutional rights but that takes effort that takes soul searching that takes social change easier to blame the gun
That is the latest figure I have for annual firearms murders in the U.S. It is from the CDC 2015 stats.
While you offer up good suggestions, which is more than many do, I have to disagree with "does not infringe on the government's ability to regulate firearms". I believe the Second Amendment is very specific that "the right of the people... shall not be infringed". So the government has no right to regulate firearms. Any change to that would have to come with a Constitutional amendment. I like your idea of firearms training but don't feel it should be mandatory. I think gun owners are coming around to the idea that we need to police ourselves. Just as many years ago when hunters started pushing states' fish and game to impose hunter safety requirements in order to buy a hunting license. Now, I think, is the time for gun owners to require training of themselves. With the story of this thread I am not sure what good mandatory training would have done anyone.
Shouldn't have been so flippant with my reply and taken the time to clarify myself. Didn't mean to say that they weren't out there, I was certain he was talking about the pic I had posted from a book I have, and the rest of my statement should have included "I showed it to you..." I may have spoken too soon however.
I grew up in MD where it was illegal to hunt deer with any .22 cal, I agree with that law. I heard a long time ago that one reason the US choose the 5.56 was because it tended to wound instead of kill and a wounded enemy would cause one or two of his buddy's to help him thereby taking another one or two out of battle. An AR in .300 Blackout would be much better for deer hunting. I also haven't hunted much in years, although I'm going to try to take the grandson squirrel hunting maybe next year. A couple years ago I also helped chipmunks in the same way when they would dig up all my corn plants. Now, mostly starlings are my only live targets.
Just a symptom of the same CANCER (affecting American Society) that allowed Trump to be elected. It is what it is.
There is a common denominator with most of these mass shootings. http://www.cchrflorida.org/antidepressants-are-a-prescription-for-mass-shootings/ http://markets.businessinsider.com/...tially-Linked-to-Psychiatric-Drugs-1002085657 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2017/07/25/antidepressants-linked-murders-murderous-thoughts/
Whoa that's a hard one....let me think...hmmm...I know... ban the guns altogether then you don't have to worry about the loonies getting their little mad mits on them.
