Air marshals onboard planes like 44 special because they can load them lite and then they won't make as big a hole in the jetliner when they have to shoot a terrorist or hijacker.

So there are very good practical uses for a 44 special revolver.

You are infinitely better off with a pistol that holds 10 to 15 rounds rather than a revolver that holds only 5 to 6.

That's precisely why law enforcement finally gave up revolvers.

Some old sheriffs and their deputies out in West Texas still use revolvers, but it's rare these days.

Revolvers were a great idea back when pistols were single shot muzzle loaders.

    But not anymore.

If you really need high power in a handgun then the Desert Eagle 44 magnum is the best.

Otherwise any 9x19 or 45ACP (11.43x23) is ideal.

    From my book of mantra's:

    YAY THOUGH I WALK

Yay though I walk thru the Valley Of The Shadow Of Death,

    I fear no evil –

For there is nothing on this Earth I cannot kill.

Whether in the mountains or the deserts or the forests or the jungles,

    Though it be an elephant or rhino, a hippo or croc;

Though it be a buffalo, bear or lion –

    Human or non-human --

There is nothing on this Earth I cannot kill.

Being taught and trained to kill,

    Being sent out and returned from killing;

Having considered the evil and violence

That is everywhere on this Earth –

Both in the animal kingdom and the world of humans --

There is nothing on this Earth I cannot kill.

The most deadly opponent is another armed man --

    A human trained just exactly like myself, but in a different uniform;

Same weapons and same state of mind –

Trained like an animal to hunt, find, pursue, and kill –

Like a four legged predator hungry for meat.

The most deadly game is another armed man.

And there is none that I cannot kill.

My rifle is my best friend.

My pistol is my second best friend.

    My knife is my third.

These live with me and sleep with me –

They are the protectors of my life.

Blessed be the Lord Who is my Strength –

Who teach-eth my fingers to fight and my hands to war, amen.

@APACHERAT don't you agree, my Brother?

You probably recall the USMC 0311 version from 'Nam:

"Yay though I walk thru the Valley Of The Shadow Of Death,

    I fear no evil –

For I am the most evil mother loving son in the Valley."

Not necessary, if you're lucky enough to own a Winchester Pre-64 Mod. 70 rifle (Mauser action) you can use a stripper clip to quickly reload the magazine.

Longfellow, Winchester's receiver bridges had two different hole spacings for the rear scope base. Those with the standard .860" spacing were used on both early and later versions when no clip guide was milled into the receiver bridge, except for the post-'64 match rifles with .308 Win barrels whose bridge was about half an inch longer and had a clip guide. Match rifle receivers had a clip guide in the bridge for charging the magazine with 5-round stripper clips.

M-14's and Springfield M-1A's all have a clip guide where you can quickly reload or top of the magazine without removing the magazine.

    M-1 Garands, AR's you can't.

Have a Ruger Mini-14, you're in luck, you can attach a clip guide to your Mini-14.

All military bolt action rifles (03-Springfield, Kar-98 Mausers, 7.5 mm Schmidt and Rubins, 303 Enfields, Magnit Mosin's) have a clip guide to quickly reload or top of the magazine.

These old military bolt action rifles can be sporterized and make excellent hunting rifles.

Probably my most accurate and favorite centerfire pistols are the s&w 38 revolver..i have the ubiquitous model 10, and the combat masterpiece, which was my dad's. Great size, reliable as anything, balanced, and easy to shoot. For fun shooting /plinking, they are tough to beat.
I've also reloaded more 38spl than any other caliber, so that tells me what i enjoy shooting the most. Whether in the levergun, the snubbies, or the 4+" barreled revolvers, they get the most fun shooting downrange.

I'm old school, and partial to revolvers, but i see the virtues of 10+1 in a compact doublestack. So i enjoy shooting the revolvers more, but carry the semis.. no wonder I'm so conflicted!! :)

    ..don't know anybody THAT old...

When i was little, i met an old civil war vet.. but he didn't have any arms, so no firearms would work for him. He was very good with his feet, though.

I know you don't have any interest in older guns, and that's fine. But trying to equate single actions to flintlocks? Sorry, that's just silly.

No, you might be, but I'm better off with my single action revolver. Thanks anyway.

Revolvers are natural aim handguns while pistols are not except for some examples like the P-08 Luger.

KILL OR GET KILLED Colonel Rex Applegate Point Shooting Instructional Film

Go to 4:45 in the video. It explains natural aim revolvers.

    Just sayin'.

Really, really, really old school is bow and arrows and/or spear.

I hunt with a bow and arrows during the archery season, and with a spear underwater in the sea.

Ok so John Browning did not think of this back in 1911.

I personally grew up around old U.S. Army WW2 vets like my dad. That's all.

My grandpa was in WW1 (on the German side) but he died before I was born.

Nonsense. All kinds of guys hunt with single action revolvers. Further, having had a pistol jam on me at crunch time along the Song u Bon River, Vietnam, in 1967 I'll never trust one again.

Notice how the recruit is pointing his 45ACP at the Captain's belly button?

What happened to Rule #2 -- never point a gun at anything you don't want to kill ?!

    Everything jams eventually.

    AR's jam the most.

    Then semi auto pistols.

I've even seen Benelli shotguns jam.

Revolvers can also jam if the cylinder gets out of sinc.

That's right. I pulled the pistol because my AR had already jammed.

I actually depend on my pump action Mossberg model 590 8 + 1 and 50 shell bandoleer the most when I am out on patrol.

I would not trust a Benelli against a motorcycle gang.

    But my Mossberg I trust.

When I do practical carry instruction, I spend a good deal of time mixing in dealing with failures and rapidly resolving them as part of the instruction. Having some awareness of what to do, IMO, can mitigate some aspects of dealing with stress. Some people will cave with an unexpected failure occurs rather than dealing with assessing the situation and having options.
A backup can help as well.
