I'm a libertarian leaning conservative on most issues but I do believe that American society is by and large a tragedy. We're expected to spend over 50% of our waking lives (over the range of years that matter most) working. Over half... My father, now in his late 60's, continues to work because his SS + AF retirement is not enough to comfortably survive. I'm no economist and I don't know how we can feasibly change any of this but it does suck. Aleksander makes a great point that we shouldn't need to put in early 19th century hours of work with today's technology.

I care as much as I care about that business that gets wiped out by a hurricane or tornado. Or fire. Or drought. Or economic changes. Its the f***ing risk you take as a business owner. It sucks and at times is tragic. If only there were a way to minimize risk.

As for your comments about jamming up the stores, If I go to Walmart and I am free to buy a fishing lure, paint, bug spray, grass seed, jelly, and tuna fish, I am a hell of a lot safer than if I, along with dozens of other people, are all shoved into the grocery aisles.

 

No, the entire goal of the lock down was supposed to be about "flattening the curve" so the number of hospitalized didn't outrace our hospital beds. We've done that. Beds are empty.

Well your question was stupid. But since you really want a response to it, here goes: Eventually, the entire country is going to be a hot spot because there is no vaccine. You may think we can shut down for 18 months or so but I don't see that as in any way possible. We'll be starving by that point. Hot spots are a problem when they overrun the local medical capability. Which was my entire point. Broad areas of the country are not hotspots and are not going to immediately turn into one because people are allowed to work. We're not trying to prevent anyone ever from getting this virus. I'm not sure how you can think that.

What is wrong with suggesting that is people want to stay home beyond the opening that they should. No one will force anyone to get out and do business. As for the rest of society that must work for incomes to support families, we will do that.

The only way your incredibly naive and selfish proposal could possibly work would be for the elderly, sick, and compromised citizens to completely shut themselves off from society. No visits from kids or grand kids, neighbors, friends. All so you can leech your pound of flesh at the expense of the medical workers and the stupid.

I know you think we can stay shut down for a year, it's not possible. We will find a way to open back up and do it as safely as possible. You can lock yourself inside for the next year, but the rest of us need to work and open our businesses back up.
