No rush. Someone just told the Good Idea Faery to shut the **** up and stop letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.
The A1s are more than ****ing sufficient to take out T55 and 54 soviet era crap.
We don't need to spend money building A1 1/2's or whatever someone called them, we can just give them our leftovers which are perfectly overpowered for taking out orks.

We might as well let the A10s go over there for their last real hurrah.

The rush now is to support offensive action by Ukraine.
Export-model A2's do not have classified armor.

You asked what's new/changed in Ukraine, and a general offensive in the Spring would be new. However, as far as the Abrams tanks are concerned, I think it would be better to ask what is new or what changed in Washington, not Ukraine. The arrangement that was originally negotiated or requested - acquiring M1A2s - is not near as practical for both the U.S. and Ukraine as providing them with M1A1s that are already built and can be shipped and their crews trained in a matter of months. Time is of the essence, and we're replacing our M1A1s with M1A2s, so the old M1A1s are eventually going to be "excess inventory" (for lack of a better term) thus it makes sense to send them to Ukraine where they will be best put to use.

Yep, those are the exact planes Poland will be sending to Ukraine.

Ukrainian troops using 19th-сentury arms to defend key city – Telegraph
With modern weapons and ammo in short supply, Kiev’s forces are reportedly dusting off old Maxim guns

Ukrainian forces defending the Donbass town of Artyomovsk, also known as Bakhmut, are relying on Victorian-era Maxim guns, the Telegraph reported on Friday. Despite receiving tens of billions of dollars worth of US and NATO aid, Kiev is reportedly struggling with shortages of arms and ammunition.

There is nothing new about Russia waiting for hard ground to start their offensive. Winter time when the ground is frozen and after the spring rain when the ground dries up. Typical seasons. So no that isn't what changed for the Pentagon. I'm sure Ukraine would have been happy to receive the A1 tanks as they would have them by now but the Pentagon decided new tanks would be better for them. Just without the A2 classified armor. So why has the Pentagon changed their minds on the decision to now send them the older A1 tanks? No one seems to have answer any answers. I have my theory.

The A1's are old and will require a ton of maintenance. The A1 is a jet engine powered tank which I'm sure Ukrainians do not have maintenance experience on. I'm guessing the maintenance will be done by a US contractor until the Ukrainians get up to speed. But this will put Americans in harms way and risk starting WW3. The Pentagon initially stated the Abrams was too heavy for Ukraine's soft ground so why has that changed now?

I wasn't talking about a Russian offensive - I was talking about a Ukrainian general offensive.

I'd be interested in hearing your theory but I thought I already answered your question. The M1A1s are more readily available to the Ukrainians and more expendable to us. A couple of years ago the Marine Corps decided to ditch its armored forces and equipment and the Army wound up with a bunch of M1A1s it was phasing out. Why not get those tanks in Ukraine's hands ASAP when they are needed there ASAP? Sure, it might not be the tank they were hoping for, but it's still a major upgrade from the unreliable Soviet-era T-64s they are trying to fight with now.

The low I.Q. wrongly think they some how have something to do with nuclear weapons when they are just using a dense naturally occurring metal as part of an armor piercing shell.

Wow its not like we can find or teach anyone how to maintain an engine. That's just eldritch sorcery of the 4th order and not something that you can learn from a book and some hands on training.

Putin invading a nation we're obligated to defend does tend to have that effect. Maybe he should stop aggressing against a sovereign nation so we don't all get together and push his **** in for him.

As with the lets build them their own tank: Stop letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Yeah .. this is not really a tank battle .. other than just a piece of equipment hurling artillery .. so is just another piece of artillery which just sits there and fires .. When any equipment can sit and fire 155 mm shells.

Trench warfare USV -- "Ground and Pound" two sides facing off .. out of visual range hurling artillery at each other .. is an artillery battle .. in which Ukraine is expected to run out of Ammo and bodies by end of summer at current rate .. heavy casualties much higher than Russian Side ..almost all ukrainian fighters now green as all the veterans dead life expectency in the Ukrainian trench 4 hours .

So enough of this gloryboy fan fare trying to put lipstick on the meat-grinder .. like some happy hollywood movie where there is a happy ending .. sorry mate .. this is the sad movie .. no happy ending .. "Hamburger Hill" the name of this saga..

Who voted to obligate the US to defending Ukraine? If your life depended on a sophisticated piece of equipment like the Abrams I think you would be rethinking your casual attitude towards properly training mechanics.
