You say that as if we're a prudish country that has made sex illegal for pay.

it's a good thing that you have a progressive national health care system to pay for the explosion of treatment resistant STDs in your sex slave class cited earlier.

This move makes strategic sense on behalf of the US and it's allies to counter the growing influence of china in the region. China has been shadowing US, Japanese and Korean naval vesals more and more frequently. This is an obvious sign that the Chinese are trying to project their power. They have also submerined into and out of Japanese, Korean and Philippine waters quite frequently to test their neighbors ability to detect them. With marines being moved off Okinawa soon, we need another strategic location to act as a deterent against the aggression and military buildup in assistance. If we were not here, this area of the world would be quite a bit more unstable than the ME.

    not necessarily.

for Australia, it may have negative consequences.

the US's history in the region is not highly regarded, and for us to be too closely aligned with you is not a good thing.

I also wonder what we are going to do about cluster bombs.

maybe we can force you to give them up?

if so - that would be at least one positive thing to come out of this sycophantic arrangement.

Okinawa hasn't been a very safe place for little girls while the Marines have been there.

LOL, to quote Shakespeare - "Thou whoreson zed; thou unnecessary letter!" :-D

But you are right - the only entry I could find on Google was for chemicalize. It's not in my dictionary. :)

This is geo-politically all about China in case people haven't grasped that yet. Cold War redux. I guess Aussies give a free pass to China's human rights record...yep America's always the bad guy.

unfortunately, the US has a record of adopting a confrontationist approach with everyone - just like most of the american posters on this forum.

they will basically start a new cold war.

we need international cooperation at this point in time - not conflict.

Exactly what kind of negative consequences are there for Australia? There is no threat of AQ or Taliban attacking because we are there. And I'm sure most Aussies would agree that peace must be maintained in Asia. The US is the sole reason Asia has enjoyed peace since WW2. Other than Vietnam and the Korean war, it has been relatively peacefully. We have acted as the 3rd party negotiator and deterent to keep the three big Asian countries (Japan, Korea and China) from going at each other again.

It was an unfortunate incident, but in no way defines us as a people. Is it fair to judge all Australians by the act of one of you... or perhaps a small handfuls of bad Australians?

I would prefer to get on well with the neighbours, than become thick as thieves with someone who provokes them

peace is not maintained by military posturing.

I'd say that prize belongs to the Aussie dimwit who claimed that Aussie troops were 10x better then any other forces in the world.

10 times is a lot less than basically claiming that 2 500 Marines can defeat China.

    me....sort of. :D

as usual, our Aussie friends read what they want to. i said 2,500 was all they needed.

2,500 isn't enough to repel an invasion, but it's enough to demonstrate a commitment to our cousins down-under.

U.S. continued friendship with Australia and now the positioning of Marines there enhances our ability to dispatch carriers quickly to areas targeted by those Marines. I doubt seriously we'd need Aussie permission with our troops stationed there.

This move is more likely the result of intelligence that only the White House and selected military components of the U.S. and Australia are privy too.

It's people like you who have made me hostile to Australians. As ye sow, so shall ye reap.

Sure it is. Peace has been maintained in Asia for quite awhile by this specific method. You believe that after WW 2, no one in Asia would have retaliated against japan after they nearly occupied all of Asia? You believe the US has not acted as a counterbalance to possible instability in Asia since WW2? Do you believe Japan, Korea and China's economy would have thrived as well without the stability having us there has given them? This deployment of troops is just a message to china that we are watching and keeping them honest.

Do you think we have been sitting on our arses doing nothing all this time? Do you think America is the only country in the world with influence? Do you think that you are welcomed in places like Laos?

There is still a LOT of anti-American sentiment across many areas of South East Asia
