Yes, but the Germans hated us and wanted to defeat us. The South just wanted to break away and form their own country. Big (*)(*)(*)(*) difference. It was Americans fighting Americans.

They didn't want slaves because they thought they were inferior, although most White did believe that, North and South. They wanted them because one, it was cheaper for big land owners and two they felt they had to have them to keep their economy going. It was unlike the economy of the North.

So instead of making up something new to show off this "southern pride", they use a flag which was used for traitors and bigots?

BTW, is it southern pride when KKK hung it up?

Don't associate the KKK as being an example of all, or most the people in the South. Most Southerners didn't feel that way. There were a lot of bigots in the North and still are.

As for being traitors. The South did what they felt they had to do. The North was getting to much power in Washington and we're trying to hurt the South's main industry.

People want to say slavery was the only reason for the Civil War, but is was more than that. The actions of the North hurt the South's economy a lot. Taking away slavery would almost kill it. The South felt they had to break away to survive.

So, do all neo-confederates believe slavery was ok because they needed "help" with their land? That it was ok to sell and own a human being because of their skin color?

We don't need to protect the world from the sight of unpleasant things--especially when it can create dialog. Kids could have told her how they felt about the dress, that it hurt their feelings, etc.

Even tho I lean left in a lot of social areas, I don't understand thought police. The world is a great big pile of savagery and cruelty, but we'll protect kids from rebel flag dresses so that it doesn't offend someone. What does that do but breed a nation of uptight wussies?

What's wrong with kids sorting it out themselves? Engaging her in dialog and talking it through. That's the tools we're supposed to be learning, how to work through problems as opposed to burying them like cat turds.

The dress is ugly, but that is no reason to get band for prom night.

Now where the news talk about feminist teachers? That is nonsense.

Well, today conservative want a new kind of slaves, employees. They are better because they are cheaper than slaves, to the slaves owners had to give them shelter and food, with employees just a wage, a minimium wage.

Again, you make it sound like it was all about slaves. Northern tariffs also played a big part in it. They wouldn't have needed slaves except most people coming into the US, settled in the North where the weather was cooler, work was easier with the coming of the industrial age and pay was a lot better. The North had a three to one advantage over people than the South. It was hard to get enough people to work the farms and farming was the main industry of the South. Take away the slaves and with the high tariffs, you kill the Southern economy.

"The tariff was retained until 1824 when it was massively increased. In 1828, the so-called Tariff of Abominations was introduced increasing the rate of tariffs significantly to assist Northern manufacturers. This was massively unpopular as it raised the costs of production significantly. Further, as the measure increased the price of cotton goods, British textile manufacturers sold less in the US and reduced their purchases from Southern cotton growers accordingly. This tariff was massively unpopular in the South and opposition was led by Vice-President John Calhoun who broke with President John Quincy Adams over the issue. "

No, it wasn't right, But what I am saying is the South did what they thought they had to do to survive. Just as many would do today. If things had been reversed, I have no doubt the North would have done the same thing. People do what they have to do to survive. It wasn't the South or America that brought those slaves to America.

Instead of making something new, they use the flag their ancestors used. They took a symbol and changed it into something else that has nothing to do with race. The only people that are offended by it are northerners and those who are hyper sensitive about everything. You're claims of associating with bigotry for the majority of modern day people is just false since I have seen blacks,Cubans,Mexicans, and Asians display the flag either in their yard, on their clothes or car. But that probably doesn't mean anything to you since it doesn't fit your preconceived notions.of racism. And as far as the kkk goes, ask them since you both seem to be stuck on race.

I've always been disturbed by the use of the Confederate battle flag as a symbol of the South. The Confederate States of America, like the Nazis, were at war with the United States. The Confederate battle flag represents an enemy of the United States. The South is so much more than what this flag symbolizes. What's embarrassing is that this girl's education in U.S. history was so poor that she would even consider wearing such a symbol.

I really think people are to sensitive today about everything. They find reasons to get mad and condemn things. Most people don't fly or have symbols of the Confederate flag because they hate Blacks or because they agree with slavery. Some do because they think of themselves as a little different than others, a rebel. Some just plain like the looks of it, like on the radiator or mud flaps of a big semi truck but it's almost natural for some people to always look at things and pick out something about it to complain about. Others see it as a power trip, as with separation of church and state law. Lets complain about God being on our money. A cross being on a government cemetery. I have the law on my side, so I'm going to push it. One tried to sue Bush for saying (So help me God) in his swearing in ceremony. There was a guy in California that sued the state because their computer hard drives were called Master and Slave. Another guy threatened to sue a pipe company for calling pipe fittings, male and female. Both said it offended them. People are either to easily offended or just love to try and start something to bring attention to themselves when they couldn't get that attention normally. It's a power trip.

Actually they were being kind and just trying to spare the young girl's feelings for when, in the future, when would look at pictures of that ugly atrocious dress and need to be restrained from committing suicide for making such a fool of herself!

Odd how the issue of the SLAVES "surviving" is NOT part of the South's consciousness EVEN TODAY!

Funny how little people in this country know of their own history. I wouldn't be surprised of how many don't even know who fought in our Civil War, much less what caused it. You can tell by the many posts on here that thought slavery was mainly, or the only reason and didn't even know the reasons for slavery. No one even mentioned what tariffs were doing to the South and how that was a major concern.

You have posted NUMEROUS "reasons" for slavery, ALL of which meant that the WHITE PEOPLE were going to be wealthier, fatter, and happier at the slaves' expense.

It is both pathetic, sick and hilarious how you are BLIND to your CONTINUED lack of consideration of giving even the slightest nod to the HUMANITY of the slaves!

They are not HUMAN to you even now!
