While it is true that there is no such thing as free speech in a public school, I have to disagree that they necessarily have the authority to just arbitrarily ban a certain symbol because some might be offended. Of course, some public schools now have school uniforms for just such a purpose.

 

What would she sue for? What damages?

That may be, but the fact is that American society in general had deemed their social institutions outdated and abhorrent and they attempted a treasonous defiance of the obvious will of the People. We may be Republic, but we're still a Democratic Republic and if enough people join a movement against a social institution, the minority must break before that movement, not engage in war to separate themselves from that majority.

 

What heritage is she trying to show off? Is she bragging about coming from a part of the country that owned slaves? Northern States had slaves so that's nothing special.

Is she bragging about being from a part of the country that engaged in armed rebellion and caused the deaths of about 650,000 people in a brutal war? That's something that's shameful.

Or is she boasting about being from a historical backward part of the country?

Not shameful at all, beleiving in and dying for your land is never shameful no matter what the politicians and wealthy of that land are engaged in. This is like saying German WWII vets have no right to be proud of their service.

WTF do you think you are to judge what is "backward" or not? I wasn't aware you are some advanced evolutionary being capable of judging which cultural contexts are inferior or superior to your own.

 

Actually race has nothing to with the majority of people who display the flag. It's just like so many of them claim, it's southern pride. A lot of the north puts down the south,judge and ridicule them for events that took place before any of us were born,and hold an illogical prejudice against them. Because of that, the south doesn't really care for the north to much, hence the southern pride.

 

Of course I can judge who's backward since I am in fact an advanced evolutionary being. The area and people are backward and have been for centuries.

 

Watch the video and she says why she wanted to wear it. She said she wasn't making any type of statement but she thought it looked "cool". The year before she wore a camouflage dress. She's a country girl, that's why...but why does any of that matter? Is there any possible reason for her wearing that dress where you would somehow support her decision? If not, then I have to ask, again, why does it matter?

Edwards should have cleared the issue with the principal beforehand and her teacher had warned Edwards months ago that the dress might be inappropriate and the school’s dress code policy does say that “certain shirts with printed material on them will not be allowed.” It's not clear if the Confederate flag itself was a problem as she claimed that other students were allowed to wear clothes with the Confederate flag.

That being said, it's stupid to have "pride" in the Confederacy and just shows why New Yorkers who move south have so much success. Obviously, the South has a long way to go...

 

What if she had worn a Nazi flag? A confederate flag and a Nazi flag are pretty much the same thing and people gave their lives for both.

teachers and adminstrators tend to be Democrats. It was the Democrats who opposed civil rights and pushed Jim Crow laws. I don't understand why a Democrat would be offended by this if they think it racist????

 

Sid Vicious wore Nazi shirts and he was just a heroin addled punk rocker. Kids wore Che shirts, but I highly doubt most of them could point out Cuba on a map or knew that he was from South America. Most kids know nothing other than something looks cool.

I have a 13th Legion shirt that I wear because I <3 Titus Pullo, and I hardly think the Gauls would appreciate that, either.
