Europes far right still loves Putin

Marine Le Pen, the leader of France's anti-immigrant National Front, is a politician on the rise. According to a recent survey, the far-right Le Pen would come out on top if polls for France's 2017 presidential election were held today.

Her popularity is a mark both of increasing French frustration with the political status quo as well as of Le Pen's own efforts to bring her notoriously xenophobic (some would say neo-fascist) party closer to the French mainstream. Yet there are many contexts where Le Pen remains at odds with Europe's liberal consensus. One glaring case in point has to do with the continent's current bogeyman: Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Relations between Moscow and the West are at a post-Cold War low, frayed by Putin's power play in Ukraine, where thousands have died during a year of clashes between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian government forces. But Putin has vocal allies in the West, particularly among Europe's resurgent far right.

Speaking to a Polish radio station this week, Le Pen took Putin's side in the conflict, hailing Russia as "a natural ally of Europe." She said Moscow's annexation of Crimea last March ought to be recognized by European governments, stressing that the interim government in Kiev at the time "was illegal." She trotted out the Kremlin's talking points on the nature of the revolt that ousted Ukraine's pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych last year, branding the movement as one organized by "Neo-Nazi militants."

Never mind the irony of a far-right European politician warning against neo-Nazism. Le Pen repeated claims she has made for almost a year now that Europe, when it comes to Ukraine, is behaving "like American lackeys." Le Pen sounded the gong again earlier this month: "The aim of the Americans is to start a war in Europe to push NATO to the Russian border," she said.

As WorldViews noted last year, Le Pen is hardly alone in her admiration for Russia under Putin. A whole range of right-wing and ultra-nationalist European politicians share her affection for the Russian leader, whose religious nationalism, conservative values and stated discomfort with the U.S.-authored geopolitical order all appeal to their own brand of politics.

To be sure, Putin has his backers among Europe's hard left as well, including within the government of newly elected Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. As an article in the Guardian noted this week, the Euroskeptic far right and hard left in effect give Putin a sizable bloc of support in Brussels -- roughly more than a quarter of the seats in the European parliament.

Part of this is down to political affinity -- Putin is, for many critics of the European establishment, an appealing counterpoint to the piety and dogmas of Western liberal democracy. Elsewhere, populists and wannabe strongmen all look up to the example set by the Russian president. But, as the Guardian reports, it also has to do with money.

Le Pen's National Front admitted it received a $10 million loan last year from a Russian bank. A web of far-right politicians in Europe have received some form or the other of patronage from figures within Putin's camp, including a wealthy oligarch. In former eastern bloc countries like Hungary, Russian largess is playing an increasingly prominent role in shaping both the nation's economy and its politics.

"Its beyond irony," a senior figure in the European commission in Brussels tells the Guardian. "You can hear Putin say he had to act in Ukraine to stop fascism, while hes financing fascists right, left, and centre all over Europe."

Litwin, stop to generate false information about Russian economics. This is not true that people lost 50% of what they had in 2014.
The inflation in Russia for the last year was below 20%. In fact, even Norway currency dropped 12% because of the drop of the oil prices. There is no doubt that Putin is a strong leader. You always compare him with Stalin. This comparison is itself the proof that he is a strong leader, as Stalin was one.

As business shrivels across the country, Moscow remains an economic beacon.

Alexandra Vasilieva, the cashier at Arina’s Hangout, is from the province of Smolensk in western Russia, where work had dried up so completely that her husband, a window installer, was making just a small fraction of his previous salary. So they came to Ramenskoye and now he commutes more than two hours each way to Moscow for mediocre money. Her son, an auto service worker in Smolensk, lost almost a third of his salary because fewer cars were being brought in for repairs and servicing.

“In the provinces, the wages are too small to live on,” she said. Her monthly salary in Ramenskoye — 20,000 rubles — is sinking in value, worth just $305, down from $416 in May.

As for Crimea, if she thinks about it at all, it is through the lens of economics.

“I’m sick of Crimea,” Ms. Vasilieva said. “I’m sad for people,” she said, referring to Ukrainian refugees, “but why are they getting all this government assistance?”

Further pinching Russians’ pocketbooks are trims the government is making to benefits doled out when times were flush. Pensioners in the Moscow region can no longer ride free on the Moscow Metro, a change that affects more than a million people in one of the most densely populated regions in the country. Apartment owners across Russia must now pay a repairs fee every month, which has prompted protests in some regions.

Lyudmila, 68, a retired accountant who declined to give her surname, said it was no longer worth it for her husband, an artist who works as a designer on housing projects, to commute into the city to supplement his pension — $153 a month.

“If all you have is a pension, you can’t afford to buy shoes,” she said, sitting on a park bench next to her grandson, who was eating a tall white puff of cotton candy.

Still, the discontent seems to bypass Mr. Putin.

“Honestly, we are so proud he is our president,” said Vyacheslav, 75, a retired factory manager, who also refused to give his surname, as he steered a mostly empty grocery cart through a Kopeika supermarket here last week. “Thanks to him, we have all of this,” he said, gesturing toward a glass display case of beet and potato salads, fried eggplant and pieces of chicken.

I totally agree Putin has panicked over low world oil prices a scheme implemented by the Obama regime to defeat him. I personally think that is a Zbigniew Brezinski foreign policy initiative Obama is carrying out and not the one the EEC envisioned. as taking down Putin

I think Merkel would have preferred offering Putin nice fat money for oil if he did not invade Ukraine, and Obama prevented that from comingabout preferring instead a direct economic war with Putin and I do not think Obama gives a damn about Ukraine. I think this is all about Obama's ego and
seeking revenge against Putin for the Syria humiliation.

I also found it very unusual Putin panicked and reacted as he has by engaging himself in a useless air war in Syria. I think he sensed this would frighten Obama, the EEC and especially NATO.

I personally think Obama could care less who blows up in the ME-and at this point this is blinded by a need to salvage his reputation and ego before he leaves office trying to get the last word in with Putin and bring him down with fallen oil prices.

A world crisis punishes all Obama's foes whether It be Israel, Saudi Arabia, Russia, China, Europe on and on. To me Obama is just as dangerous right now as Putin. Either could make a misstep because of their bruised egos.

Putin for some reason is committed to Syrian and Iraqi oil imports. On that one I just do not understand him. He has overplayed his hand on this one. He's as paralyzed in Syria as the US. There is a limit to how many villages either can blow up. All the continued bombing does us is incite even more millions to flee to Europe continuing to flood the West with Sunni Muslims and the recipe for future Christian-Muslim civil war in Europe.

The more Obama and Putin blow up Syria the less likely Putin's bum boy Assad can survive. Therein lies the irony. Putin's puppet can't reside over a non existent infrastructure-the more his country goes kaboom the more likely one of his military officers kills him.

I believe Litwin that both Obama and Putin are disruptive, rigid, ego maniacs, thin skinned, dishonest, and both equally as brutal-but I also believe Putin is the bigger danger and will pull back when he realizes his show of force in Syria is being wasted and is not distracting from his losses in Ukraine.

I also believe his air war is costly, something he did no plan for. Good luck absorbing the cost of it with his economy that is barely existent at this point. I see him making some boom booms for now then slowly easing up arguing he does not want to hurt civilians. (right like he really cares)

Putin has burned his bridges in Europe but I believe a new Republican American President would allow him to safe face and try a new approach to get his butt out of Syria but keep his naval port there with a new regime and continued access to Iranian and Iraqi oil travelling through Syria to China and Russia.

Putin is in big trouble. There's a huge oil deposit half way between Cyprus and Israel which both will be empowered by and Greece as well. This will then trigger I believe the other huge oil deposit off Gaza to be accessed-either way BP OIL and the Chinese federal oil monopoly have lined up ti get their hands on it and this flow will keep oil prices lower than Putin would like just when he thinks he can get it back up in 2-3 years if he lasts that long.

I predict a civil war in Russia within 3 years from lack of food-each winter brings Russia closer to this war. Ukraine is the least of their problems-food in her peoples' stomachs is the issue. Russia can barely feed its armed forces. If it thinks it can be another North Korea where only the military ets they must think again. Its people are too hard to control now that everyone has access to a cell phone. Russia can try take down all the internet networks it wants, it can't stop the coming revolution by cell phone. KInd of ironic what with Snowden sitting there in Russia tweeting everyone with disinformation.

For 50% or maybe 70% citizens before sanctions the pension was 8000/30 = 177.77 euros. After sanctions 8500/75 = 113.33 euros.
