I know very little about Russia or the Russian economy. There is a great show on PBS called "Putin's Way" which is worth watching. In the glory years when oil was hitting $100 a barrel Russia was laundering a lot of money in London and Frankfurt.. Not any more.. My overall impression is that Putin is simply another Russian thug not unlike the Brighton Beach Mafia.

One of my Russian friends who lives just East of Moscow and who was a member of the Soviet Military and then became a Consultant and is now retired has told me he is having trouble getting his Pension checks.

At first they used to mail them out and then they made him and everyone else set up a Direct Deposit system and the Bank was telling him that the Russian Government was not sending his Pension money.

When he called the Russian Pension Bureau or whatever agency handles his Pension they told him they had electronically deposited his pension money into his account.

He told me this back and forth went on for close to 3 months and then he got a single payment and then it stopped again for some time.

I have not talked to him since that last conversation so I don't know what's going on with him right now.

No way. All retired people, especially in Moscow and especially former military people get high pensions without delays.

 

I think this is an issue with the bank rather than with pension funds itself. My parents get pension without any problems. By the way, all the former military people have very high pensions compared to other people and they will be the last who will have problems with pension payments.

This is half year old article. I think that social allowances have no relation to pensions. Pension money come from different source. But I think anyhow this is bad.
