Excellent points. Most people feel that they're slipping, but the government is spending more on giveaway programs now than every before. However, they're only able to do so by going TRILLIONS into debt. Once the debt bubble bursts, it's all over and then they will feel the pain of letting all these manufacturing jobs go to other countries.

    LOL.

Remind them to bring blacks whenever they make a public demonstration.

We also have more loopholes and foreign tax shelters than ever.

Close those and the problem is solved.

We do need better leaders, perhaps Trump will shake the tree hard enough to get rid of the pests.

    Wow, they sound like Democrats.

Republican back then would never make it in the Republican party today.

In fact, I cannot think of one Republican president or nominee who would be supported by today's Republican party, and that includes Reagan, who raised taxes several times and compromised on immigrants and the evil empire. Even their last few nominees and presidents are shunned by the party.

You're a loser, not an intellectual. Real intellectuals can succeed in capitalist environments (they're the easiest to succeed in)...accept the reality.

Personally I don't think the Confederacy was any better than the Union. They were just as anti-federalist as the Union, as evidenced by the Fugitive Slave Act and their very centralized constitution following independence. They did not create a confederation of states, they centralized power in a unitary government.

They also share massive responsibility in causing the war by not permitting the North an independent policy on slavery. If they had actually been proper federalists as in the days past (men like Patrick Henry, Cato, Brutus, etc), then it's likely that the war never would have happened, and slavery would have eventually dissolved peacefully as it has in every other Western nation. The war was a product of 80 years of economic and political dispute between the North and South.

We'll, that was fifty years ago. Now all they need is a paper shredder. Didn't see much in that document that applied to the Republican party.

Of course you know that few of us will do this. It's dozens of pages in which to look for corners where your veiled point might be hidden.

I also wouldn't read a book to look for another posters point. Just make your point.

You brought up some good points. I would put it more this way though. Both sides were equal. The idea that today we teach that the South was evil treasonist pigs is nonsense.

As you mention, there was the fugitive slave act. This had support by the North since it passed prior to Lincoln showing up. From my impression, the first confederacy was not working well so they changed to the constitution with the central government having more say so. I won't call that wrong to do.

Slavery would have vanished. To aclaim war was good if they can claim it was purely about slavery is bad history.

Some say the South was right. Well, a good case can be made why the South should have worked it out first and see what Abe the outlaw was up to. I don't think he would have emancipated the slaves.

In short, I call what happened a mistake.

As a historical note, he would have been the nominee were it not for an assassin's bullet.

To stick to that part of the world, I studied the Ukrainian constitution as well and it is pretty sound and looks even better than ours is.

Why would the Republican platform from SIXTY years ago have any relevance today?

Durham County neighbors the county I live in. Those bags on the table all have that same t-shirt in them, along with the usual party-specific swag given away at state fairs and other similar public functions. I actually have one of those 'Black Republican Committee' shirts. I could probably get you one if you want it. :D Once again, Mr_Truth, there is no truth to be heard from you.
