What you are either missing or are you purposely ignoring is the fact that Jones lies have inspired people to harass, threaten to shoot and kill the parents, shoot at the homes of the parents whose children were murdered , urinate on the graves of murdered children, etc etc. Jones claimed that Obama let up the scene to support a plan to “confiscate our guns”. A civil suit is the only legal way to punish the POS Jones. Sadly a slow death by torture would be illegal but I would not recommend that for revenge even though I live 17 minutes from Newtown CT and that is by far the worst murder to ever occur in my state.
There but one way to describe Alex Jones and that is a turd that needs flushing down the toilet.

Except, you generally cannot state "I believe" in something. If you are under oath, you have to tell the truth. YOu can say I know it or I don't know or I plead the 5th if the question is involving a legal citation. But any good attorney will have that remark stricken from the record as non-responsive. Hence why I said it does not hold exactly true in civil court under testimony.

Sure you can. You tell what you believe to be the truth.

When one can't be criminally charged for lying.
But can be sued for lying.

Then that qualifies as an opinion. Not 'the' truth.

There are 12" in a foot as a unit of measurement.

    Why?

The jury is saying it perfectly clear, this is an intolerable misuse of speech. Period. Let Jones appeal, if he can afford it.

    Jones was free to speak.
He just wasn't free of consequences of said speech.
    Is what it is.

I imagine the parents feel that Jones got off lightly - Jones just has to pay money, he can make more. The parents lost their child
AND their right to grieve and privacy to do it. Some of the families have had to move multiple times to try and get away from Jones' followers.

Try that some time and get back to us.

Your opinion. And not a completely accurate opinion at that.

Somewhere, there is something which defines that foot such as piece of metal at precisely the correct temperature and atmospheric pressure. Likewise, somewhere there is something which defines an inch. Those items are called standards. All measuring instruments are calibrated against those objects or objects similar to those. It is impossible for either of those to be precisely accurate so that there are precisely twelve inches in that foot.

Seriously? That’s one hell of a cop out way to say there exist no facts, which is not, in fact, a fact.

Not a cop out at all. I took a measurement class in engineering school. One of the points was that nothing is one hundred percent accurate. One other interesting point was that, frequently, the measurement itself changes the object to be measured..

When you state something, it is just your opinion. Unless, of course, you can make the outrageous claim that you are never wrong even in those cases where you believe you are right.

Why don't you show us then?
I've never been aware of temperature and pressure involved in measuring a distance.

But you did give your opinion. And not much else.

Here's a link you can use to prove my factual statement wrong.
    https://www.conversion-metric.org/length/feet-to-inch

But, you are absolutely wrong, because that statement was NOT my opinion.

That’s one way to go through life, I guess. Do you go tell your kid’s teachers that they are lying to the kids when they teach them that 2+2 doesn’t always equal4, and there aren’t four quarts in a gallon?

What do you think defines that one foot? Somewhere there is a standard, most likely in the Bureau of Measurements and Standards. That object is most likely made out of metal. The size of a metal object is affected by temperature. It is also affected by atmospheric pressure, but to a much lesser extent.

Not at all. However, whatever, your teacher tells the kids is an opinion. In most cases, the opinion is likely 100% correct, but it is still an opinion.

2+ 2 = 4 only if the numbers are rounded off to the nearest whole number.

    I didn’t say 2.00003 + 2.00000000007 = 4, did I?
It’s hard to have a conversation with someone who acknowledges that zero facts exist.

First of all, you're talking about the 1st Amendment, not the 2nd amendment.

Furthermore, it has been established that the 1st Amendment does not universally protect false statement of fact. You may not be legally protected if you falsely yell fire in a crowded theater. You may not be legally protected if you sell a product and falsely claim that it cures cancer. Finally, if you make a false statement of fact against someone, you may very well risk being sued by that individual (or individuals) for defamation, depending on the circumstances and consequences of said false statement of fact. It is a case by case basis determined by a due process in the court of law. Unlike fraud cases, defamation cases are strictly civil cases, and not criminal cases. In other words, if you lose the case, you do not go to prison, nor are you hit with criminal charges, but you may be made to pay compensation to someone else who was harmed by your actions

He has free speech, he can say whatever he wants, and that is what makes America great.

However, he has to take responsibility for the awful things he says. That is why he owes over a billion dollars and will be broke for the rest of his life.

I don't think he crossed any lines. I'm with Bill Maher on this- free speech absolutism (it'll be interesting to find out if Bill Maher is still sticking to that after this or not...)

It would be a lot harder for me to think Jones has simply been railroaded for politics if the 'guilty' verdict had been handed him by a jury instead of by the judge for extremely vague 'default' offense based on the claim that he failed to provide 'financial documents' during discovery. Given the ad nauseum (and wildly various) corporate media reports of Jones' net worth supposedly based on 'financial documents obtained in discovery', it seems rather odd he would be defaulted (and thus deprived of a jury trial) based on the failure to provide 'financial documents' during discovery. I would very much like to know what 'financial documents' Jones' 'failed to provide', and also I would very much like to know whether or not the awards trials juries are aware that Jones' was not found guilty in the defamation trial by a jury.

I guess you haven’t read the link I provided. He sent NO discovery documents and answered NO subpoenas. The judge isn’t required to sit around forever awaiting His Lordship’s presence. We have rules for a reason. He broke them. He suffered the deserved consequences.

I dare you to ignore subpoenas. You will not be treated as Jones is. It will be much worse.

Personally, I look forward to the billions that will start to be awarded to all the future crybabies that are "hurt" by every pontificator on Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, etc. The lawyers are going to have a field day.
