Again, you don't know the pain he caused and the millions he made off of some of them getting death threats.

But a jury of his peers made the decision.

And what damages did his speech cause them?

See post 96. SCOTUS holds that ruining the reputation of private citizens is a no no. Jones targeted them. He called them out by name.

I would say it stands to reason that he does. I’m sure he received all the same hate and social discrimination these people did and maybe even more. MSM not some nobody smeared him. I think this ruling can just as easily hurt the freedom of the press as it does speech.

SCOTUS ruled on this 50 or so years ago. You can’t just lie about private citizens. I believe Rittenhouse is suing CNN, but I never really followed the case. I don’t have an informed opinion on that.

You are still unable to define or show the harm Jones supposedly caused. That does not contribute to your credibility.

Are you an activist to correct the harm caused by the clot shots? Do you advocate that Pharma personnel be punished for the visible harm they've called? Do you advocate for the Nuremberg Principles to be applied in this case?

    I didn't think so.

It's good that you acknowledge that you don't have an informed opinion on the Rittenhouse case.

Sadly, uninformed opinions are passed off these days as factual statements. You are rare.

The case of Sandy Hook is an example of uninformed opinions ruling. There have been at least two very detailed studies of the facts surrounding Sandy Hook, and the very obvious conclusions were that the official narrative was contradicted by the facts. Wolfgang Halbich is an expert in school security systems, and he was just one who shined light. Both those detailed studies were soon removed from the internet in accordance with government censorship of stories showing government lies, just as Julian Assange has been imprisoned for 12 years or more for revealing the crimes and falsehoods of government.

The simple truth is that Alex Jones was right in observing the official narrative is a hoax, but just as people rave about The Emperor's New Clothes, they rave about the emotional appeal that is the official narrative.

does alex jones have free speech?

Of course. Nobody stopped him from saying what he said. But what he said was illegal and there were consequences.

The post above mine is not specific to this case. I am not asking for a legal definition as to what constitutes slander. I am asking your explanation as to why it applies in this case. Obviously you have not looked at it to that degree yet you were convinced regardless. That has been my point all along. Our covil justice system has run amok and this is but one more example of such. Billion dollar verdicts are nonsensical. For one, that will never ever even come close to holding up on appeal. For that reason alone, this is an abuse of the system by that judge.

When someone is unjustly hurt in a car accident and receives life long injuries such as being paralyzed, they will be awarded a few million dollars to pay for their medical bills and compensate for lost wages. That type of verdict is proportional to the harm done and that award makes perfect sense in an attempt to make someone as whole as possible. It is not a license to get rich quick it is simply a logical verdict

You are asking why $1 billion is excessive? So $10 million is not enough? $50 million.....$100 million.......$500 million. Nope, it took $1 billion. That is such a nonsensical figure that will never in a million years hold up on appeal. It literally has zero chance. For this reason alone this is an example of the justice system run amok. In comparison to the paralyzed driver, how can you legitimately conclude that these people have been harmed 100 fold over and above what a paralyzed driver might receive? I realize this guy is a major league a**hole and his words are extremely hurtful to people that have already been through unimaginable pain. But put what Jones did to them in perspective of what a careless driver that paralyzes another does to their victim. Does the Jones victims deserve a 100 fold judgment versus the paralyzed driver? Cmon. When put that way, this is OBVIOUSLY silly. The worst thing that ever happened to that paralyzed driver in their life is that accident caused by the person that is paying their verdict. The worst thing that ever happened to these Sandy Hook parents is their kid being killed. Alex Jones insulting them on top of that is despicable, but in the grand scheme of things is NOTHING in comparison to what happened to their child. Alex Jones words are an annoyance, NOT a life changing event. To pretend like that is a billion dollar event is bereft of logic.

Jones damaged the reputation of private citizens. This isn’t hard to understand. It’s a no no, per SCOTUS.

Jones isn’t in trouble because he called Sandy Hook a hoax. It’s due to his directly calling out these parents by name, calling them liars/actors and editing video to make it seem like he was right. This is just one example.

I can’t believe you condone slandering of private citizens.

Additionally.....This was not a jury of his peers as you claimed above. Regardless, the problem with our civil justice system is far more related to juries then it is to judges. You have amateurs that no nothing about product liability etc making these types of judgments based on feelings rather than knowledge or logic.

You already said this. I’m not discussing the amount right now. It’s utterly ridiculous and Jones will never pay even close to that.

The verdict is good, the award is not. I condemned the amount pretty early in this thread

I am discussing the amount. It is silly. When you consider the harm done to a paralyzed driver versus the harm done by a person with some extremely hurtful words, there is not a comparison, yet these people are getting a hundredfold increase over a paralyzed drvier.

The notion that their reputations have been harmed is a stretch at best. The only thing Jones saying those things did is to make people think that Jones is an a**hole. To me, he is like a 911 truther. Nuts yes. Does that mean that the people afflicted desrve a billion dollars? Cmon.

I said the award was too high.

The threshold for private citizens is a lot lower than for public figures. This is SCOTUS saying this, it’s not my opinion. Jones gave the judge no choice, by refusing to show up. If you don’t show, you get found guilty by default. Would it make sense to find a no show plaintiff not guilty? Lol. No.

My whole point is that this is an example of the civil justice system run amok. If you agree, then there is nothing left to discuss. Of course it is too high. If this was a 25k per plaintiff type verdict, we would not be discussing this.

Of course you could have looked up the definition of slander. I guess I need to spoon feed you. Slander is a spoken false statement that damages a persons reputation. His claiming that the parents of the children who were murdered by the killer were involved in staging the murder of their children using actors so the Obama would have a reason for the Gubmint to “ be taking our guns”.
The slander is that these parents had their reputation smeared.
Their reputation as parents Thiago is.
I do not agree with you that this case is fundamental to the issue of excessive jury awards. I see that you are speculating that this jury award will be lowered by legal appeal. Maybe so. Excessive jury awards are a problem. With nearly 40 years in the insurance industry I am concerned with excessive jury awards because we all end up paying for them in our premium dollars.
Just curious do you by any chance believe that Jones is right that this murder of 20 first graders was staged?

How many times do I have to say that Jones is obviously a major league a**hole before you stop pretending like I am supporting the man and his despicable actions? Sincerely, this is getting tiring. This has nothing to do with Jones. I could not care less about the man. My concern is the civil justice system run amok. If you too believe that excessive awards are a problem then you are in agreement with me.

He made many millions. He should have to pay something that hurts a bit. He isn’t allowed to do what he did. He did it for profit. The profits from these lies are the target.
