I think you've worded it perfectly we fought fighting those wars. There were stupid rules of engagement, we put ridiculous geographical boundaries on our troops while the enemy escaped to places where we couldn't peruse them. We tied one or both hands behind our backs while the enemy engaged in TOTAL war. And, NO, they weren't poorly armed, read an account of Dien Bien Phu to get an idea of the arms the Chinese and Russians were supplying the Vietcong. And that was very early on against the French, it only accelerated and became more sophisticated as the war went on. I'm certainly not as familiar with the Afghan war but it appears to me we fought under rules that limited our troops while the Taliban, again, fought total war.

i am a relatively wealthy man and i pay a number of taxes that are specifically designed to protect me. i don't want to own an f-16 and i don't expect to ever have to worry about being attacked by one. that the president of the united states would make such a statement leads me to worry about the aims of the federal government. what such a statement shows us is that the executive branch of our government sees a different sort of america than i was raised to understand, that there are "the people" and there is "the government". this is a frightening revelation.

i do know of several groups who could easily bring down an f-16, but none of them hope to ever be put in such a situation. we live in an age where even secession should be dealt with in a civilized manner. the arms that we carry are meant to protect us from civil unrest or even localized governmental violence. that the president would even consider using military aircraft against the civilian population can only lead one to believe that the stockpiling of weapons is entirely justified.
