I would have thought a sovereign state becomes one when recognised by a number of nations.

The US has not recognised Palestine as a sovereign state.

I wonder why have they recognised the TNC in Libya as such after a couple of months when they haven't done the same to Palestine after 63 years.

On reflection I suppose it's because Libya has oil and Palestine does not.

A number of nations have recognized Palestine.

Only South American countries as far as I can see. And that's not enough to claim legitimacy.

However, as you seem to feel differently, don't you think that Palestine (as a sovereign state) should also recognise Israel as such?

Russia, China, about 130 States in all so far out of a possible 193. The US bloc still has its collective head up its collective ass.

Why should Palestine recognize the state that's spent the last 50 years oppressing them?

The US is in hock to China for breathtaking sums. Did you say that China ' didn't matter ' ?
Then there's the , not insignificant, matter of the other 129 or so.

He's here all week , folks.

Why should the US recognise the same inhabitants of a country whose government colluded in the downing of a commercial flight over Lockerbie?

Yet of those 129, the most significant player, the US is not one of them. And the Palestinians won't say it doesn't matter - because it does.

The US is not ' the most significant player ' any longer. The US recently shot itself in the foot at the Security Council and now the world is waiting for it to fall on its ass. No country can veto its own policy and retain respect.

But the US has the power of veto at the UN and that's what matters in this circumstance.

No, the US does NOT have a veto in the General Assembly.

So what about the United Kingdom (has a veto but is past it), France (has a veto but is past it), Russia (has a veto but is past it) and China (got a veto and is climbing)? Is the United States a member of the majority of the veto nations or is it like China?

I don't think there is a power of Veto in the general assembly.

    You're right.

Are you aware that the General Assembly can, under circumstances conducive to world peace, overturn a Security Council veto ? Few people seem aware of that.

It doesn't really matter. It needs only one veto to screw something up and if the US says no, the others don't really matter.

Which would be the end of the UN as a body of any significance and there are too many corrupt people within it to let that happen. So, dream on.

Of course, but it is exactly what the US and Israel did to the Palestinians.

Every people can elect whomever they wish to represent them, including terrorists or Iranian stooges. No other people have any obligation to deal with terrorists or Iranian stooges.

The German people elected Hitler. The Palestinian people elected Hamas. That's their business. We have no obligation to recognize Hamas.
