The rationale for Japan was actually to cause them to surrender more quickly with fewer conditions to avoid the Soviets gaining influence or territory. Japan's surrender would not have required the nukes, but it's not as big of a deal as people make it out to be. Conventional strategic bombing had already destroyed cities, killed millions in general but 100k in a single raid in Japan before the nukes. Strategic bombing in general, total disregard for civilian casualties and total war, that's the dark legacy of WWII for both sides.

No but specifically who is suicidal and capable of nuking Russia over nuking Syria?

oh i dont know.... I suppose it depends, if you think Russia should be allowed to just Nuke anyone they want with no expectation of retaliation.

It might also be important to remember, Russia thought they could bomb Turkish terrorists in Syria, and the Russian plane got shot down.

Can't be too sure. Look at trumps support despite the anti trump media campaign.

There will not be enough fallout to cause this. Accept it.

Low yield tactical nuclear warhead will not cause enough fallout for this to happen.

He said that he hopes that he doesn't need to.

That means that if he needs to he will. Not saying that he will need to. But who knows what ISIS will come up with next.

Ive heard about them making chemical weapons.

He's grandstanding but a nuke on Raqqa coordinated with an Arab ground offensive (in both Iraq and Syria) against other major IS strongholds (who would now be leaderless and without orders) would end the issue. The war at large would still rage of course but the IS would be knocked out of the fight at least. A vary limited (all nuke powers agreeing) strike is something that needs to be seriously considered if the West isn't willing to outright invade.

When ISIS ends its usefulness, rest assured, obama and pals will smite them, but not a second before.....

oh I dont know, you wanna destroy the city of raqqa right?

    how big is raqqa?

    Al-Raqqah
    City in Syria
Al-Raqqah, also called Rakka, Raqqa and Ar-Raqqah, is a city in Syria located on the north bank of the Euphrates River, about 160 kilometres east of Aleppo. It is located 40 kilometres east of the Tabqa Dam, Syria's largest dam. Wikipedia
    Area: 758 mi²
    Population: 220,268 (2012)
    Weather: 43°F (6°C), Wind E at 6 mph (10 km/h), 68% Humidity
    Local time: Wednesday 10:53 PM
    Area code: 22

Its gonna have to be something rather large to blow up an area 28 miles by 28 miles square

    Oh. AL-Raqqah.

Just the part with the terrorists. Especially if they have chemical weapons

I see what you're getting at, but the risk of mutual nuclear annihilation, should matters escalate, would be far too risky to consider. Then again, when did politicians ever stop to think?

Yeh your right. They do have the vacuum bomb. I'd really, really like to see that one being used.

No he didn't. He said "We will carpet bomb them into oblivion. I don’t know if sand can glow in the dark, but we’re going to find out." You don't generally carpet bomb with nukes.

Except its 3 times lighter and 4 times more powerful. That's where russia got the idea from.

I would have to agree from the explosion.

Vacuum Bomb is a thermobaric bomb, unlike the MOAB

So it more effective for killing people and demolishing things

The GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast, (commonly known as the Mother of All Bombs) is a large-yield conventional (non-nuclear) bomb
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/GBU-43/B_Massive_Ordnance_Air_Blast

MOAB is just a really big conventional bomb

The thermobaric device yields the equivalent of 44 tons of TNT using about seven tons of a new type of high explosive. Because of this, the bomb's blast and pressure wave have a similar effect to a small tactical nuclear weapon, although on a smaller scale. The bomb works by detonating in mid-air. Most damage is inflicted by a supersonic shockwave and extremely high temperatures. Thermobaric weapons differ from conventional explosive weapons in that they generate a longer, more sustained blast wave with greater temperatures. In doing so, they produce more damage over a larger area than a conventional weapon of similar mass.
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Father_of_All_Bombs

Anyway, you can see a clear diffrence in the explosion. That's proof in on itself.

You have to forgive Draco. He thinks that anyone who questions US foreign policy is from Russia. He cannot conceive of the existence of Americans who have a balanced view of foreign policy that isn't characterized by mindless jingoism.

Everything I hear Obama say "exceptional" I get annoyed.

That mindset is a divisive force in foriegn policy.

That's actually an insult to dogs. They have much more integrity than the western media does.
