I'm not a Saudi man.. I am an American female which always allowed me to talk with either gender over a period of a couple of decades.

Saudi men love their wives, mothers, sisters, daughters just as Americans do..Some mistreat women and so do some American men.

You are such an ignorant hater, Litwin... Why is that? What happened to you that makes you so bitter and dishonest?

I don't think you can deny that a female would have many more freedoms and rights, in Iran, by far, than in Saudi.

But, that said, I don't think that is our battle to fight. Change has to be organic, in that situation.

Don't forget, the freedoms females enjoy in Europe and N America today, are relatively recent, and yes, time was a wife simply had no real outlet to report abuse. And rapes were rarely reported, esp as the rapist could conduct his own defence.

And we had hanging here, and they still have the DP in the US, plus all those they murder with drones and wars.

So. Even if some of the Saudi culture seems alien to me, and perhaps in need of reform, I don't think the US can take the moral high ground, until it stops supporting global terrorism.

Most of the Saudis I have known were friendly and very kind.. and cheerful in overlooking Western gaffes.

But, like most people.. if you treat them with suspicion and mock their culture.. instead of loosening up, they go retrograde.

That is true of other people as well. You can (*)(*)(*)(*) off an Irishman, Italian, Englishman, Swede etc if you cop an attitude..

Saudi Arabia is like a Salafist dystopia.

The House of al-Saud needs to be kicked out, but they won't because they derive all their legitimacy from having Mecca and Medina.

One of my fiance's relatives is Muslim and she talked at length about how the Saudi government changes the beginning of Ramadan from what the Moonsighters say. They're not really interested in keeping Islam pure, they're interested in their total power trips.

No actually it doesn't make sense for the most but perhaps you can expand on what you mean by such things as historic preservation. Is historic preservation for example opposed to the destruction of historic architecture in Mecca and Medina, or traditional practices like polygyny? Does modernity mean Westernisation? What is meant by pseudo American, are Europeans such?

Cairo is far away from the Red sea so...summary from my trip - your county is a badly overpopulated, that's way you move back. Egypt can give work and provide dissent life for 30 millions people not for 90

How do you change Ramadan? Maybe your finacee's reltive doesn't understand time zones.

I know many of the senior Al Saud.. They derive their power from reinvesting oil income in healthcare, education, power, clean water, roads, recharge dams, being responsible for the helth and safety of the millions of pilgrims and so forth.I'd bet your fiancee's relative has never met a "Salafist" and has a poor education.

Historic preservation means saving old Jeddah, old Riyadh, Diraya, Tarut etc.Polygamy is contractual..Modernity means they want to have better lives and maintain their culture and traditions.

Interesting. So why aren't they interested in saving old Mecca and Medina or is it too late? Modernity and wanting to live better lives means not maintaining culture and traditions but changing them for example womens education! How are Saudi women any different from their manfolk in their concern for preservation of history, potsmoking kids, kids charities etc.?

Mecca hosts 4 million people a year for Hajj.. and those numbers are expected to increase.. They must be fed, have a place to sleep, have access to healthcare and sanitation facilities. That is the practical obligation of the SAG.

There are MORE women in Saudi universities than men.... and Saudi women take out more business licenses than Saudi men.

    he is right

    That happens

There are times Saudi starts one day earlier or later than others.

In Egypt we do not really get cloud or rain so we see clear skies mostly and we see the crescent moon. Because Saudi has sometimes cloud they dont see it and dont believe us so they dont start it till next day. I think last time was either 2010 or 2009 when Egypt started and Saudi refused and they started a day later because they had cloud and could not see it.

I see so they're not interested in saving old Mecca because it cannot or couldn't be done without compromising the practical obligation towards pilgrims. So really they're more interested in fulfilling these obligations which is not "fairly normal".

Whether or not there are more women attending Saudi universities has no bearing at all on the point I was making which is that it is not maintaining culture and traditions but changing them! However since you say this it is apparent that women are more interested in educating themselves than maintaining culture and traditions.

Apparent? Saudi women among the merchant class have been in the import-export business for many generations.

And, yes.. the health and safety of pilgrims is vital.. Can't have them dying in the streets of hungar, thirst and disease. People are more important than buildings.
