Hell, I live in the 4th most populated county in the country and only about 10% of the people here wear mask. My county has nearly 5 million people and only 250 deaths. Maricopa County has one of the largest retiree populations next to FL. Our stores are packed, our parks are full and our hiking and biking trails are constantly busy. Fear is what keeps this country weak. Remind me who said this famous quote.
THE ONLY THING WE HAVE TO FEAR IS FEAR ITSELF

Exactly, it will work it's way through the global population, all we can do is try to manage it. The lockdowns were so hospitals wouldn't be overwhelmed, they aren't, so what's the excuse now? Sweden never did, and they're closer to herd immunity than we are.

This is not controllable right now but the next round that comes may be different. It may begin in a smaller city than NY but whether it's a large or small city, unless it's shut down tight right away and controlled then we we'll be battling this as an entire nation all over again. If it's controlled at the source right away hopefully it can be contained and hopefully disappear until the next flu season. It will be like stomping out little fires constantly. One thing we need to start doing is bringing our manufacturing back here where it belongs. Our economy won't survive unless we do.

A good friend was an engineer in the aerospace industry. Years ago, maybe 20 or so, he was paid $90,000 by his company to go to China for 3 months at a time to train their engineers in jet engine design, etc. He hated it but it made him a wealthy man for his retirement. China has a lot of people to feed, great schools and their give their kids a great free education. Their children are serious learners and very ambitious, they have a lot of competition in China for jobs Years ago, the US market couldn't compete with China because of the high wages paid to US workers, the same workforce in China is going to be much more profitable because their wages are slave wages compare to ours in the US and they're required to work 12 hours a day.

China has become known as "the world's factory" because of its strong business ecosystem, lack of regulatory compliance, low taxes and duties, and competitive currency practices. The US has to figure out how to turn that around and it's going to take a lot of 'giving up' on the part of the workforce in the US. The US government may have to somehow subsidize labor costs just to gain back market shares we lost decades ago.

Like I said before, this country will be changed for a very long time and people aren't going to be able to live as they have been used to. A vaccine will surely come but that's going to present more problems that will be made political. Who will manufacture it, will they have an exclusive patent, what will it cost everyone and will it be available to everyone even those without health insurance?

A wise man who was leading a nation that had 100x more to fear than we do right now.

Yes it will be available to everyone who wants it. The multi trillion bailout is all the proof one would need regarding that.

I do have a problem when an 82 year old with emphysema after 50 years of smoking dies and the cause of death is COVID-19.

Sweden has a population of 10 million people. New York state has a population nearly double that of Sweden, 19.4 million, (Manhattan alone has 8.4 million)

With a country the size and population of Sweden, it was much easier to try to establish a herd immunity to the virus. They did their best to shelter and sequester all of those over 65 and those with serious pre-existing conditions, and let much of the rest of the population circulate and get exposed and become naturally immune. Once about 60 percent of their population has gone through this they'll have herd immunity and the viral transmission will be blocked.

It's not possible to do that in the US but we can certainly do this when the next round of this virus comes in the fall or next winter. Once it's detected, lock down that particular city, lock it down tight even if it takes the national guard to monitor it, it has to be that way to prevent the spread to other states. That's the only way we'll control it.

He summed up the answer nicely. If we can shut down a nation we can protect those most at risk. Much more logical answer than driving the economy into the ground for everyone. :)

I lost both of my uncle to AIDs in the 80s. I recall the same negative outlook on the ability to beat that by some of the "Experts".

I would not recommend dismissing the virus, but it does need to be placed in the the correct context in regards to it's danger. It's been overblown and that has cause many devastating steps to be taken that did not have to be.

I hope it's not going to be like the testing was supposed to be, "Anyone that wants a test will be able to get the test." sound familiar?
Guess who was instrumental in the development of the HIV drugs that has saved millions of lives since the mid 1980's? Dr. Anthony Fauci. And, this virus has similarities to HIV.

This hasn't been overblown and we are all about to see for ourselves in two weeks or less.

    "Experts"

Easily the most abused and overused term in existence today.

For liberals, the "experts" constitute a new priesthood that everyone must revere and obey without question.

And it doesn't matter that these "experts" continue to get important things totally wrong.

They can blame Trump for the virus and Trump can blame them for ruining society in response to the virus.

    See who does better.

By the way, I'm not sure Biden will remember his talking points well enough to make the case that Trump was responsible for the virus. His senility will probably prevent him from that.

We should focus on basic measures that are proven to boost immune function and overall health: Regular exercise, good diet, adequate rest, frequent socializing, and minimizing exposure to toxins.

The medical establishment has no interest in that because there is no profit in it. They just want to sell you something, even if it doesn't work.

That's what Hillary tried to do. She lost. And unlike Biden, she wasn't going senile.

That Democrats have knowingly chosen a senile candidate for president is quite remarkable, even by Democrat's low standards.

SF Chronicle Op Ed: This can’t go on. California has to figure a way out

Willie Brown, [former long time speaker of the California Assembley]
    May 9, 2020 Updated: May 9, 2020 4 a.m.

“When people were asked to shelter in place, they did so in amazing numbers and with no plan.
But nobody envisioned the shelter-in-place would last this long.

Some people who have jobs or retirement checks are fine with staying inside. Those who have lost their jobs, or fear they’re likely to lose their jobs, want the state to reopen. But so far, the authorities who have locked us in have yet to figure out how to get us out. If they don’t figure it out soon, the public is going to find a way to get out on its own. In fact, some counties and some professions are already opening up.

And trying to keep businesses from opening with threats of suspending their liquor licenses or cosmetologist licenses won’t work — not on a mass scale that would be needed if many people start to say: enough.

The goal of the shutdown was to curb the coronavirus and keep the hospitals from being swamped. We kept the hospitals working, but we have yet to curb the virus and a vaccine is probably at least a year away.

In the meantime, we’re headed over the economic cliff and facing unemployment numbers the likes of which we have never seen before.”

There you have it from the man formerly known as the Ayatollah of California, a prominent democrat

They are not going to price people out of a vaccine. Silly comment, proof is right there for all to see if people turn off their silly Trump Rage,

So that means we really will get a vaccine, awesome. Saying we will not get one when the world is focused on it is simple fear mongering.

Has bee overblown. 2 million dead, hospitals over run, bodies in the street, supply chain crashes etc etc etrc….the death count world wide is 10% of what people were saying the death count in the US alone would be. Overblown.

2 weeks huh? More scary timelines established...got it...

If Biden a personality or any charisma Trump might lose with the C19 mess.

But he does not. Amy or Pete....the DNC blew it badly..

In which case you're seeing crazy people. No one in their right mind is out shopping for anything but essentials, nor bringing anything into their home without thoroughly decontaminating it first.
