“As Nashville reels from school shooting, Tenn. lawmakers consider loosening gun restrictions”

“Tennessee has one of the nation’s highest rates of gun deaths, including murders, suicides and accidental shootings. It also has some of the most permissive gun laws.”

“In 2021, it enacted a law that lets most Tennesseans 21 and older carry handguns without first clearing a background check, obtaining a permit, or getting trained on firearms safety.”

“And state lawmakers in the Republican-controlled legislature are considering numerous pieces of gun legislation to make firearms even more prevalent.”

“One bill would drop that age from 21 to 18. The House version would let people carry rifles and shotguns in public without a permit.”

    https://tn.chalkbeat.org/2023/3/28/2...st-legislature
    https://abcnews.go.com/US/tennessees...ry?id=98156599

Based on facts, more guns equates to more gun violence and deaths, Tenn itself proves that, so why would a State, that just witnessed elementary school kids getting killed, even think of making it even easier to obtain a weapon?

States with stricter gun regulations have less gun violence, and the opposite hold true for those States with less restrictions, so why is the obvious overlooked?

Vermont has the loosest gun laws in the country and one of the lowest murder rates in the country. That destroys the claim that "more guns = more crime".

'cos it's a religion, and logic doesn't apply to religion. It's how you're brought up, how your parents/peers think, and impossible to change. That's why gun ownership goes along with fundamental religion, it's just the same. It's too embedded now in the American psyche, so you'd better just get those coffins ready.

Yeah, because banning guns is literally the ONLY solution.

There's absolutely no point in trying anything else, because there's only ONE solution and that's to ban guns.

No it doesn’t, Vermont is an anomaly, which you would quickly learn if you had been there, keep in mind they elected Bernie Sanders multiple times, the overwhelming majority of other States prove the fact, more guns, less restrictions, equates to more gun violence and death

Doesn’t have to be, and wasn’t always, the Brady Bill and ban on semiautomatic weapons proves it, it is part of the American psyche cause the gun manufacturers have imbedded there, at some point, common sense will prevail

Not true, it is not an either or answer, you don’t have to ban guns, you can regulate access to guns, which is the problem today, too many guns out there and way to easy access to too many guns

Access to guns is regulated. In places like California, it's very regulated. In California, those regulations haven't been affective. In 2020 California had a 30% increase in homicides.

And have any of the proposed changes actually been shown to increase shootings? Wasn't the school a "no guns" zone?

We have drug laws? Those laws certainly have shown so helpful over the last five decades, right.

We have prescription medication laws, especially narcotics? Those laws have worked so well for the U.S.

Has anyone even considered this is truly a mental health issue? None of these people are stable. And their actions usually come from hatred, in one form or another.

Do you care to explain why you believe Vermont is an anomaly?

Surely there must be a reason....

Barely regulated, with loopholes and State exceptions make them a joke across the country, California may have regulations but neighboring State’s have few. In addition, if you reviewed the facts I forwarded you’d see California ranks near the bottom of list of State

Keep saying that but it is true, and supported by documentation, more guns equates to more gun violence and death

Sure, as shown, the more guns around the greater the gun violence and death

Yes it was a no gun zone, but everything around it is not

Instead of banning guns, ban the internet!
For those of us who remember life pre-internet, we never had this stuff because the crazies could not talk and compare notes, and create the critical mass of crazy to start shooting.

Vermont has the 2nd lowest population in the country, and it's population density is about half of Tennessee's.

Hate to see what would happen with our drug laws, and we increased traffic safety laws as such as seat belts and it has led to a decrease in accident fatalities

Sure mental health is a variable, however, it is only one of three found in all school/mass shootings: the shooter, the target, and the weapon

We can address mental health but we are still not going to know who the next shooter will be, nor can we protect all the targets, you can militarize schools, but there are always just as easy alternatives. The only variable we can effect is access to what makes it all possible, the gun

Compare the educational level, income level, and attainment level of Vermont against vast majority of States with loose gun laws. As I noted, there is a reason they have reflected Bernie Sanders umpteen times, no other State would do that

Not talking about banning guns, rather regulating access to guns, and good luck with eliminating the Internet
