I actually saw a lefty on here blame a rise in crime on the officers who quit. You can't reason with anybody who believes such ridiculous things.

Oregon is really only a blue state because of Portland. Those officers leaving in mid-career are going to police departments where the citizens appreciate them and support them, even if it's for less money.

The left wants to remove the insurrection act as included in the recent stimulus package. This will keep the national guard from helping police in the event of rioting or looting.

If that law is removed then the Democrats will move to defund the police and after that it will be remove ICE and then the guns of all US citizens.

You can call it fear mongering but they are literally trying to do just that.

There is no mention of the Insurrection Act in the second COVID-19 stimulus bill. There is no connection between the bill or the president's ability to deploy the military inside U.S. borders.

The stimulus bill approved this week is 5,593 pages long. There is no mention of the Insurrection Act. This is false information, apparently being spread online by Trump-supporting accounts with a history of sharing misleading information and conspiracy theories.

There are counties in Oregon, poor red ones, that can’t even afford a sheriff. Taxes from Portland pick up the tab, as well as for their schools and other essential public services.

 

White flight in Portland? Never been to Portland have you? Portland is the Whitest major city in the United States. In fact, there seems to be Black flight as gentrification drives their rents to unbearable levels. There are no ghettos in Portland. The Portland area has been propelling Oregon to the top of the nation economically for years. Half of downtown Portland is the college campus of the state’s largest university. Of major cities, Portland has the greatest amount of parkland per capita. Its climate is such that a greater variety and higher density of vegetation grows in Western Oregon than perhaps any place in the country. Making it a natural wonderland. It is a wonderful place to live.


Portland is nothing like Detroit. Detroit was built upon blue collar, manual labor, factory work. Portland has been built upon the creative and educated classes who have been having a rather oversized influence on the rest of the country. Everything from tennis shoes to microchips. Cancer cures to the latest in video games.

 

Portland's white Democrats have been exorbitantly skilled at running off poor people - most of all black poor people - out of their city. It isn't a racial jungle and is the Joe Biden vision of what the USA should be - rich white communities with them unfortunate black people off in their own poor black ghettos - rather than a multi-racial "racial jungle." (Joe Biden's own word choice.)

As far as the police go, the ones in Portland are probably some of the better ones, as far as being fair and just. They tend to get along well with the community. But there are a few. Going by the rate of news stories of such instances, it seems to me that the worst offenders are more likely to be abusive towards the mentally ill, and the homeless. I’m sure this demographic was well represented at the nightly protests against police brutality.

The contract with the Police Union is coming to an end and a new civilian oversight committee has been approved by the voters by 80% of the vote. Reforms have been coming to the Portland Police department for years, part of it after a ruling by a federal judge. The last few police chiefs have been hired explicitly to reform the department. Every time there is a change, there is a big deal about officers leaving, but it never amounts to anything.

 

What Portland lacks in Blacks, they make up with Asians. Same with Seattle. In Washington Country, just to the west of Portland, there is a rather large Hispanic population. The rural parts of Oregon that always vote Republican are much, much Whiter, with almost no assistance for the poor. I don’t ever recall seeing a non-White person in the whole state of either Idaho or Wyoming. Montana either. Or the Dakotas, except for the Native Americans. Even Nebraska for that matter.

 

Who was talking about Blacks? This is the Portland police that we are talking about. Even though there have been instances of the killing of an unarmed Black man, just like every other large city, the more common complaint is the police treatment of the mentally ill, of which a large number of the homeless are, many of them Black. Many more who are White.
