Are you suggesting having no religion is a religion?

That's the cool thing about freedom: you can act to influence the the society to your liking--whatever God you follow, or the absence thereof.

There are clearly defined "sources" in plenty of early American documents to figure out what the basic moral standards are. Besides, if you know anything at all about world religions, there is a LOT of overlap of moral belief.

Ridiculous. Move to a Communist country if you want to live in a state where rights are based on human discernment. Have fun. Apparently America is not for you.

That is true, however if there are "defined sources", then your argument is contradiction.

It is not any god, it is a particular god. The Jude-Christian god is your position.

So either the god argument can be free floating without a tether, making your ingenuousness argument moot. Or claim a particular god, and render it moot by the separation of church and state.

Either way, the argument is invalid.

Religious concepts of the product of man. As is the concept of stoning homosexuals, murdering unbelievers, and killing unruly children. Hardly worth subscribing to, however it is simply a product of the time. People barely out of the stone age described the world as they saw it. What made sense then, what was moral then, simply is not so any more.

Philosophies of love and compassion are of the human mind as well, however, far less violent and ruthless. Subscribing to such beliefs would benefit mankind.

You fail to realize that all rights, morals, and ethics are derived from the minds of man. Religion is not excluded from this.

It's God--no god is specified, but there are many religions that combine to influence the legal organization of our nation.

Really? Where did I say that?

God and religion are not the same thing. There are several religious views of God that underpin the US government.

Only to your closed and assuming mind.

    I don't see how.

Just pointing out an faulty, self-contradicting, argument.

Not at all. Perhaps I worded some of my previous post incorrectly...

Basically, I am saying that if "freedom from religion" was not a part of "freedom of religion", one's views would not be protected unless one was a member of some religion. But that's not freedom at all then, is it?

I didnt read through every post. But I am a proud Atheist. I am a very spiritual person however. I meditate, I have studied religion vigorously and I dont claim to have all the answers to life, I simply have the personal belief that all of our known religions are mostly mythology.

With that said...I LOVE Christmas lol. Nothing makes me happier than spending that day with my wife and kids and aside from the presents its just fun for me to have a nice relaxing day with the family and see everyone so happy. I dont want to take the Christ out of Christmas at all. Clearly it is a meaningful day for millions of people and I respect that.

My 9 year old (my other is only 2) knows that I dont believe in God. She is a very bright girl and she has asked me about it and I am honest with her about why I feel the way I do. HOWEVER....she is currently reading the Bible and I encourage it. I ask her about it, ask how she feels about what she has read etc. She has also asked me about Islam and Buddhism as well and I explain those faiths to her as well. I want her to form her own opinion, and I will do the same with my 2 year old. If they ever decide they want to go to church I will gladly take them.

We discuss politics as well and we discuss what both sides believe in. We have even taken the online political quizzes lol. My daughter leans to the left but she is much more socially Conservative than her far left daddy hahaha. I support that because I like that she is making up her own mind about things.

Last election I brought her with me to vote and showed her the process. That was a lot of fun as well.

Sorry to get a bit off topic, but I think the point im trying to make, if any is that as Atheists its not our job to try and change peoples minds about their faith. Sure ill debate it, and when people try to bring religion into politics or policy making it is something I speak out on because I dont personally believe that religion should have anything to do with our Government or our policies.

But as Atheists we need to stop griping about dumb things like the dollar bill saying in god we trust, or Christmas or any of that stuff. Now if a politician says lets get rid of FEMA and instead lets pray away the hurricanes....Well thats a different story and we SHOULD stand up and be heard at that point.

And rational religious people would agree with your right to do all of the above. YOU (unlike some others on this forum) appear to be the sort of atheist described in the OP.

But just as there are rational and reasonable Christians, and rational and reasonable atheists, there are also dip(*)(*)(*)(*)s on both sides.

This article doesn't debunk these "myths." There are some atheists who are "out to destroy Christmas" and "angry with God." What's the percentage of these people out of the total number of atheists? Who knows? There are militant atheists just as their are militant theists.

Yes there are definitely idiots on both sides lol. That is every walk of life though. If it wasnt for the irrational people we would probably have peace on this planet.

The internet is the only place I've ever felt comfortable expressing my atheism. I keep it under wraps in real life, and pretend to be Christian.

I guess that's okay, but if you were a Christian and pretended to be an Atheist because you felt uncomfortable expressing your Christianity you would burn in HELL for all of ETERNITY!!!!

Why would anyone pretend to be atheist? There's no money in it.

Christians need to stop acting like everyone is against them when they have so much clout in the media pratically everything is centered about them

She was born into money. My family had nothing and I am only now earning about the median income in the poorest state in the U.S.

Rest assured, when I have acquired enough to begin making sizeable investments, I will have no reason to continue my charade.

Where are you getting this information?

Her father was a successful business owner of a construction business that went under after the Crash of 29. Nevertheless, he continued to find success as a rum-runner during Prohibition.

They also lived in a two-story house.

    From astro.com

By contrast, I grew up in a trailer and my parents are and always have been useless government mooches.

To whoever said you are afraid to admit you are atheist. I dont know if its for family reasons or what not but you really should just stand up for who you are and what you believe. I live in San Diego, and yes everyone is a little more open minded about those sorts of things out here on the left coast, but I used to live in Utah and you know how they are about religion there im sure. Even then, if someone talked to me about religion I would tell them I didn't believe in religion and they were usually fine with it.

Dont get me wrong, it would always become a debate of sorts but a friendly one. As long as I was kind in my responses then the Mormons would usually be kind back. The only time I ever pretended to be religious as an adult was in the Marines during basic training because time in church means relaxation time lol. I did that simply to slack off and ill fully admit that.

If its family thats another story though and I understand what you are saying. If not though be yourself and be proud of who you are!!

When I hear them complain about the "War on Christmas" (an imaginary "war" for the sake of feeling persecuted) this image always comes to mind:

There is no reason to believe that the majority of the people in the US, the voting majority, are being oppressed, the so called War on Christmas doesn't exist. When does exist though, are companies wishing to make the holiday season more inclusive. There are people in the US who are not Christmas.

The biggest thing is the word atheist, it has a cold war stigma attached to it.

Most people don't even understand what it means.
