To further the argument, the US and China do have a bigger pool, that is why they both effectively and respectively trounce the other smaller countries in competition. However, the reason why US is better than China who has a bigger pool than us, is because we are more efficient at finding and training world class athletes than our only formidable foe in the olympics.
2 medals apart, China ahead of US ten minutes ago, US ahead of China 5 minutes ago, in 15 minutes China ahead...your post is ludicrous. There is no difference between you and US is certainly not better. In fact without the freak that is Phelps (no offence Michael, I like you personally) US would be trailing. Maybe even trailing other nations and not just China...
almost choked a bit on my morning crumpet with tea after reading that post. China has a bigger pool than the US, but we are holding our own being a smaller nation. most likely we will end with most medals, and certainly most gold medals
we have more middle class parent whos willing to support their child's trainning, $$$, time, and other cost. also we have much longer sport history than china, so our trainning program is evolved.
well, its tough one, last olympic china was ahead. so they could do the same in this one. china always concentrate trainning the athlete in programs with alot medal count. for example basketball involve team of players, but only count as 1 metal. but swiming, diving, gymnastic etc etc has multiple medal count, so china invest in these program instead sports that only has 1 medal to increase their medal count.
China has a larger pool to draw from and funds their athletes 100%. They also intern them at 3 years old and brainwash them into little thoughtless machines.
Great Britain is far more culturally similar to America than China. We share a common language for one, and have historically been allies for going on decades now. Americans risked their lives saving Europe from the tyranny of fascism and Great Britain was part of of the coalition of nations coming to America's aid in fighting Islamic extremism in the Middle East. One of the few nations to support America's invasion of Iraq. Many British lost their lives. We are allies to the core. I'm confused as to why you paint China as a nation that would support Great Britain, or come to their aid...? They are notorious for human rights violations within their own sphere of influence. China, is in it ..for China. Cheer them on all you want...but Olympics aside, metaphorically....please don't complain when you feel the cold hard steel of a Chinese knife imbeded in the back of Great Britain in the coming years ahead as natural resources dwindle combining with population increases. China is for China. We yanks, will always have Great Britain's back...and I promise you, you can't say the same for China.
They don't like Uceny, they keep tripping her up in competitions, it painful from her face that every 4 years she falls down, she will have ptsd from the shame. Whats even more was after they finished the race they jogged around her like she was road kill, this leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of Americans concerning foreigners, they have no sportsmanship. LONDON – When American Morgan Uceny went down, she did not get up. Not until after the race was over and her heart was shattered. The rest of the finalists in the women's 1,500 meters completed the race. Still, Uceny was curled up on the track in grief, maybe 20 meters past the finish line, where she had been for a minute or more. Nobody came to her side. Nobody helped her up. The other women jogged around her as if she were roadkill, someone to be avoided rather than consoled. Finally, Uceny forced herself to her feet, still sobbing. She held her left hand over her face, then both hands. She was the saddest sight of the Olympics for American track fans.
meh drug testing is fine, but its beatable. Ive beaten drug tests in my past and I dont have the backing of one of the most powerful governments in the world. Its silly to think that the vast majority of Olympians at the top of their respective fields don't dope. Regardless of country. I still enjoy the competition, but they are tainted.
This is a link to the VIDEO - click it Women's 4x100m Relay Olympics London 2012. USA New World Record VIDEO ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting This video was produced by Peter Dow from Scotland to say "THANK YOU WOMEN OLYMPIC SPRINTERS. Thanks for a fantastic race and well done to the USA team for your new world record!" & to say "Hi, SEXY LADIES!" Peter Dow is single and looking for a woman
There was some noise here last week when someone realised a very high percentage of GB medal winners went to fee-paying schools and the egalite of sport doesn't seem to be reaching anyone but the affluent, i.e. sport is for the rich.
Good luck finding a "woman" if that's what you consider femininity. On the subject of sexuality, don't tell anyone but I'm not sure about Tom Daley...
They aren't necessarily at such schools because they are rich at all - they could well be there on sports scholarships. Former Wales international Gareth Edwards, for example, went to a to a posh private school (Millfield, which does alot of sporting stuff via scholarships, and I guess is one where some GB medal winners have been educated) on that basis, despite being the son of a coal miner, and not from a background that was remotely wealthy.
This happens in the US all the time. Gifted athletes get scholarships, angels or sponsors to pay for the athletes to get training from the best coaches or at the best schools. You don't have to be rich to be a pro athlete, but you do have to be exceptional.
Usain Bolt, bolts the course and bolts the door on the Relay. Well done Mo Farrah, double gold medalist. Well done Turkey for their first Olympic medal yesterday. I'm sure you're right and the majority of pupils attending fee-paying schools, do not pay fees. I think the issue is government sold off the school sports facilities in the 80s and perhaps no opportunity exists to display potential or anything else. Teachers also will not support extra curricular. I don't know how accurate the headline assertion is anyway, it was disputed and the article I read said it isn't true in Scotland though it may be true of England. US elitism. What a surprise. It happens here too, btw, but not often enough.
Watched the wrestling matches, with the Americans against Azerbaijan. The first match had some bad calls by the judges . The second match was no contest, the kid from Azerbaijan was at the top of his game. Then I watched some field hockey with Germany vs. Netherlands. Looks like the Germans got the gold. Field Hockey seems to have a soccer format. Does anyone know if it's anything like hurling?
The USA men's 4x100 team equalled the World record in their final race tonight. Sadly for them, the Jamaicans ran past them to break it! Michael Johnson as one of the BBC pundits was kidding before the start that he thought the US team needed to pass the baton at least four, or better five, yards up on Usain Bolt to be sure of a win. Yohan Blake blasted the third leg to pass the baton at the same time, and it was a foregone conclusion from there.
Congratulations to the women's basketball team for its fifth straight gold medal. To France for their first in women's basketball and to Australia for a stellar showing as well.
Is anyone a fan of handball? Never watched it before but I was really bored today. Looks like a (*)(*)(*)(*)load of fun to play.
We have David Moorcroft commenting on the Canadian contingent. I am wondering how much he was paid to praise each and every one of them by name. He can now probably afford to retire from commentating too.
