But he/she/they did not chose the words that you suggest that he/she/they might have used. The words were used that were used. If you realized the many facets that a word can have, then you should have been more curious as to what meaning was the intended meaning. To arbitrarily assume one definition above the others without even considering the context of its use or the context of the remaining passages within that chapter of Deuteronomy, is plain and simply error of indifference.

Would the use of 'awe' make a difference? I don't think so:
    "awe (ô)
    n.
    1. A mixed emotion of reverence, respect, dread, and wonder inspired by authority, genius, great beauty, sublimity, or might: We felt awe when contemplating the works of Bach. The observers were in awe of the destructive power of the new weapon.
    2. Archaic
    a. The power to inspire dread.
    b. Dread.
    tr.v. awed, aw·ing, awes
    To inspire with awe."

How about 'reverence'? Possibly it could have given a different feeling, however, as you will see, it still contains the word 'awe':
    "rev·er·ence (rvr-ns)
    n.
    1. A feeling of profound awe and respect and often love; veneration. See Synonyms at honor.
    2. An act showing respect, especially a bow or curtsy.
    3. The state of being revered.
    4. Reverence Used as a form of address for certain members of the Christian clergy: Your Reverence.
    tr.v. rev·er·enced, rev·er·enc·ing, rev·er·enc·es
To consider or treat with profound awe and respect; venerate."

Now, what was the intended meaning by the authors when they used the word "fear"?

The cartoon makes no reference to the flood or of children being killed. So, exactly where did you obtain that point of reference that you use to describe what the nature of the cartoon is all about other than what is the obvious obvious smear campaign? Are you misrepresenting again?

The hurt person that you are has turned you into what you supposedly hate---an evangelist of the doctrine of man! You words are no better than those of whom you hate and you have fallen into the trap of 'being like them.' Your avatar gives you away as 'another' false Messiah with another Anti-Christ message.

Using the OT, which is a reference for NT Christians, but not the Gospel of the New Covenant is but a cop out on your part. Show me the hate in the NT scriptures and words of Christ that you disagree with. It is YOU who are fearful and have spoken words that you will eventually have to eat as a lost soul...how much sadness you evoke among us Christians but not hatred toward your spiritual condition...you spend all your time daily on here trying to justify your confused spiritual condition, crying out for help, but rebellious toward those who would alleviate your misery with words that soothe..your pain is obvious but only YOU can redirect it.

I am sorry that a simple image offends you so. As for doctrine, why is my doctrine? What is it based off of? Can you point to the particular book that it is derived from? I am interested.

    Riiiiggghhhhhttttt. Please see this thread concerning the silly argument you just made;

You are the only one whinning brother.

Clearly you see yourself as a victim. No ones fault but yours.

Good luck in the employment field with that attitude BTW, managers LOVE it when nothing is ever the employees fault ... including the utter inability to get anything done.

Amusing bit is, I am a manager who answers to state mandated board as well as state and federal agencies.

Not once have you demonstrated my supposed feeling of being a victim, it would be hard to feel such a thing when I am I not the one blindly following a single book or hearing voices in my head. However if you like, you can certainly take this opportunity to cite such posts.

Hmmm .... you just presented yourself as being beaten over the head with a cross.

Now, when people laugh at you for such rediculous victimization, you have never presented yourself as a victim, just a person you is beaten over the head when people, people who actually practice the faith, disagree with your assesment of the faith and point you in valid directions that undermine your assessment.

Agh well, good luck moving beyond unpaid intern status.

Um, no I didn't. The purpose of the cartoon was rather obvious, it is usually the Christian right who cry victimization. Most notable yourself. Most of the atheists on this forum attack the beliefs, not the person, you on the other hand choose to spew your vile insults from your mouth on a predictable basis. You style lacks both honestly and integrity due to its often incoherent and paranoid nature.

We are not attacking the believers, we are attacking the silly, ridiculous, and downright bigoted beliefs. You may live a happier life if you could bring yourself to drawing a distinction between the two. How about you make up a religion and post it here? A religion free from hate, bigotry, and violence and see how many atheists you get to actually oppose it. Not many.

This all come from ignoring the obvious and making up lies. You seem to think the denial of a god, any god, is actually a vast conspiracy to suppress a fear of eternal punishment by a hateful and malevolent god. This may have been the reason why you decided to shackle yourself by becoming a Christian, however to suggest that atheists actually fear a gods punishment is ridiculous.

Yet, despite being told otherwise (and flat out avoiding the question in my thread dedicated to the stupidity surrounding the argument) you repeat the same tired thing again again again. Usually in a predictable rant style, a lengthily rant that usually degrades into a vast conspiracy theory. Your comments in the "heterosexual sins" thread is an excellent example, a lengthy rant that had little to do with what I actually posted. Your diatribes simply confirm my belief that the thiests are incredibly closed minded and willing to do anything prevent the questioning of those beliefs.

Despite claiming to have been an atheist, you are truly clueless.

    Try director.

The ancients figured out that inserting a bit of fear of Judgement into religion could be used to control people.

There was an evolution of the use of fear in religion that you can see evolving over time.

The Egyptians had the concept of maat .. similar to karma. At the end of days your deeds would be put on the scales of justice and if you were found too light a monster ate you.

This is bad I suppose but does not care to todays version.

Sheol (Hell) in the Old Testament primarily refers to a shadowy underworld, and abode of departed souls or a Pit.

The idea of "eternal punishment" in the afterlife really took hold with Christianity. Tales of everlasting fire and torment !

The success of Christianity can be largely attributed to this doctrine. Who wants to risk eternal punishment in the after life ?

Mohammad took it to the next level. Eternal punishment and torment is featured on every second page of the Koran.

The success of Islam can be largely attributed to this same doctrine of fear.

Deep inside the mind of every devout Christian and Muslim is the fear of everlasting torment in the afterlife.

For this reason these folks will come up with the most rediculous arguments to justify their beliefs and deny even the most obvious evidence to the contrary.

Denying the faith means risking eternal punishment .. most folks take the safe route.

Did you ever make a determination as to what the authors of the Bible and other religious documents were intending when they used the word "fear"? Was it a 'dread' or was it 'reverence'?

Do sanitation directors answer to state mandated boards then to the state and federal government itself? No? I didn't think so.

The key word being a bit ... as in what you can find with a proximity search or lift off an atheist website.

That does indeed qualify as a bit.

Agh, the world of delusion must be a great place to be.

I too wish I lived in a world where knoweldge and understanding were the result of magic, rather than study and hard work, where plagurism from atheist web sites was all I had to do to present myself as an expert.

Unfortunately, I am no longer an atheist ... can no longer live in this world of magic intellectualism and insitance ofn my own righteousness in definace of all facts .... exactly because I study, learn, and understand.

So I know when I see people who do not. All hard working people know laziness when they see it.

Not much else to add .. The NT talks of fiery torment and over 90% of devout christians believe in hell.

The doctrine of fear is alive and well !

Yep, Hell is real, and the ony one talking about more than simply acknowledging it are atheists. Just like the Bible.

Hell is for atheists just a tool to twist someone else faith, and, as usual, ignore what the NT is actually talking about.

Well, I do believe that in spite of the common belief that hell constitutes a burning, it is my opinion that the burning is the empty, burning, tearing, wrenching, ripping feeling one can experience when he/she has lost their 'soul mate' in this life. After having experienced the love of God which is infinitely more joyful than the love of my soul mate and having lost that soul mate, it is not difficult to visualize the infinitely more agonizing torment and pain if God were to be eternally absent from involvement with my soul.

I would rather view this alleged 'fear' as being a doctrine of longing for the eternalness of Gods love as opposed to the absence of that love. So, in my view, I am pleased that the doctrine of longing for the eternalness of the love of God is alive and well.

Ppl who are hurt respond 2 different ways:

    (1) hurt > anger > bitterness > hatred > retribution > end up with a hard and miserable life

    or

    (2) hurt > anger > acceptance > forgiveness > make peace > move on with living their life

You actions and threads/posts indicate that you have 'chosen' the first way of dealing with your hurt....
