Abolish the age of consent

I think the age of consent should be abolished, because the government should't decide at what age you can have sex and how old the people you have sex with have to be. People mature at different ages, so it is't fair that the government just sets an arbitary age of consent, since many are mature enough to have sex before that age. The argument that children are too uninformed to have sex is flawed, whatever or not they are informed about it is not determined by age, but by whatever or not they have been educated about sex.

 

I have just one question. If you abolished the age of consent, would you be okay with a 10 year old child consenting to have sex with a 20 year old?

Wanting to have sex with children makes one a pedo. It's not an insult, it's a fact. The same that if a poster said they wanted to have sex with someone of the same sex it would make them a homosexual. Does the thread starter want to be allowed to have sex with children? Is that what this is about? I'm interested to know.


Teaching a child what a loan is doesn't mean that a 7 year old should be allowed to come home with a loan from the bank.

 

Children are neither physically or mentally prepared for sexual relationships. They are not mentally prepared to say no, and they're not physically prepared to fight off unwanted advances. If there were no age of consent, children would be exploited in an epic fashion.

Nobody denies that children mature at different rates and different ages, physically and psychologically and a fixed age of consent can't account for that (indeed, many jurisdictions recognise that where the ages are close). Never-the-less, children do need legal protection from sexual predators and an age of consent is one aspect of that. It's far from perfect but I've yet to hear a better alternative proposed. Feel free to change that.

No, this is rather about allowing children/teens to have sex with people who are older than them without the older person being thrown in jail.

 

Children are not mentally prepared to say no? When i was a child (3-5 years old) i said to my parents if they was something i did't want to, like they taking me to an activity i did't want to, or telling me i could't watch TV anymore etc.

Nope, but it should stop those above the age of 18 to realize they shouldn't be doing what they are doing. That is the point of being the adult, taking responsiblity for your actions.
