Basically an “autoimmune disease” is one where you can develop an allergy to yourself after a triggering event. The classic case is Guillain Barre Syndrome which CAN be triggered by a vaccine but is far more commonly triggered by a virus. Basically the immune system runs a mock and starts attacking peripheral nerve cells (to be accurate the Schwann cells covering the peripheral nerve cells)

If she had a pre-existing condition that was potentially life-threatening, and she was diagnosed at 15, after 6 years of living with the condition with no backlashes from it, it was "triggered" as @Bowerbird put it. What lifestyle changes could have caused her condition to spiral after 6 years of management? It's no coincidence and it's no assumption.
