Last evening there was an edgy post that had a lot of off-beat participation. It was kinda fun, if even at one members expense.

Could there ever be a sub-forum that has little to zero moderation? Insults and all are kosher type thing?

Some MBs have them with a disclaimer to stay out if you can't take the heat.

As much as I disagree with wopper on most things, this sounds like a good idea.

(who is that guy in the wopper avatar?)

I participated in a forum that had a "basement" sub forum. Nasty was permitted, and quite fun and useful for honing smackdown skills....but the (*)(*)(*)(*) and vinager leaked north into the regular discussions.

I think it was removed a while back.

Maybe we should have a sub forum like that just to see what it's like.

Some sites have "pressure valves" like that. They call them "the basement". The site doesn't index them in the search and it's a violation of rules to quote anything from the subforum.

I belong to several forums with 'Basements' but I won't say if they work or not. ;)

There IS Moderation, but the Mods tend to be very lenient and let members work out their issues themselves.

I have never posted in one, though. Never felt the need to.

Great idea, as long as we can have one for polite discussions only as well.

Wait the forum said ,"A beautiful woman thread" was not something that Political Forum wanted to support.
Now we are talking about a place where we can openly insult each other and being rude is expected and encouraged as well as being sanctioned by the forum? Nah ( we already do that in the threads) I got a better idea lets just do this-

The creation of a Basement will be a descent into Hell. It will get out of hand, and long term enmity among members will arise.

This sounds like a pretty good idea to me, like a political /b/
I also think that a good way to make sure that it'd work or at least to vaguely moderate it is if there was some way to ban people from the sub forum specifically but there would be no post moderation (except in extreme cases) or anything

Agree with this. There's no practical way to contain the animosity to one forum - the hard feelings would migrate to the rest of the place and show up on every thread eventually.

THat is the truth of it right there. If you value civility, then civility must be the standard. There is enough problems enforcing it without giving into a free for all.

I have seen it used on other forums, and the only thing it suceeded in creating was strife. Certain posters hung out in that section, lie bullies on a corner, and when someone dared challenge them - it was all over the forum.

If you create a free for all, you attract the people who want a free for all. That does not create solid debate - far from it.

I don't care if they do it or not but I think it's a bad idea. The basement at my last forum infected the normal forums and got lots of good people banned.

    We need a "Rowdy Room."

A place where "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas."

It would be a nice release valve for steam.
