Attempting to understand Islam

The only reason I placed this thread here was that it seemed an appropriate place, considering all the
protests world wide by "peace-loving" muslims...otherwise, yes, I would have posted it in the Religion section, although many would argue that is inappropriate also, as Islam is not a religion....????

I was always under the impression that muslims worshipped Mohammed more than they worshipped Allah.
Their protests are directed towards their prophet being insulted, not their God. My understanding at the moment
is that Islam is a man made ideology, therefore it becomes a sect...but I could change that opinion as I click my mouse more
often.....

 

Pretty much. The dude heard voices in his head, combined all the Jewish and Christian religion he was bombarded with into one psychosis, molested a girl, killed 6oo for not believing him and viola, Islam.

Just saw some footage of protests in Karachi...if I was an american in the crowd I would have
been killed....this is not religion...this is just a hatred of America portrayed by hatefilled muslims...
Can someone explain this type of protest to me, and why arent muftis, imams etc stopping or
attempting to stop the violence...there is no reason for this violence from a supposed peaceful
religion...but then if you read the Qur'an..not out of context...it approves all the violence....

You have a point .. but why do you think the protests in the muslim world, and among muslims elsewhere, are directed towards american embassies, but not french embassies after the actions of charlie hebdo publishing cartoons of the prophet naked ...

all religions are man made ideologies. All ideologies are strongest when they constantly reinforced by others aound you, and it is the dominant ideology you are exposed to.

In such circumstances, when there may be a perceived threat to your values/group identity, an ideology can be used to motivate a large group to action.

this is true regardless of whether that ideology is based in religion, politics, national or cultural identity or whatever.

the bible approves of violence as well ...after all, Jesus said: "I come not to bring peace, but to bring a sword" (Gospel of Matthew 10:34)

 

Catholocism includes the worshipping of Mary, mother of Jesus...if you want to be technical, Catholicism
therefore is a false religion, as the bible states "Thou shall have no other Gods before me"

But then again, Catholics dont have voilent, hate filled protests if someone upsets them...

well ... its not technically worship. Catholics and eastern christians pray to their saints though (as intercessionists), while muslims do not pray to mohammed.

I think you also have to look at the issue of violent protests in a wider context.

for example, the protests in egypt ... how many are protesting about the film, compared to the number who were involved in arab spring protests?

its a small minority, just as it is a small minority who proested in sydney.

In pakistan ... is it really about that - or is it about america ... and if so, why?

my understanding is that this film has just been used as a catalyst for pakistanis are angry at the US over more practical issues, such as drone strikes which have killed hundreds, possibly thousands, of pakistani citizens.
