I am curious to know if any of you from Europe, especially Eastern Europe, were to move to America, what area, city or state would be your first choice? I assume many people in Eastern Europe live in small apartments, so would more of you want to still be in an urban setting, or try a more rural one?
It's a million dollar question, Greataxe. Based on what I know, Slavic ppl like Chicago land area but it's not exclusively. I don't think so... 'Fobs' ( no offense here intended) prefer to be in the urban area no matter of their backgrounds; only later, after decade, they would settle for 'less'. I hope this helps
The urban is the only choice for non farmers. Canada is considered as Slavic country (see any map) wherever you go you will meet Macedonians, Serbs, Croatians, Polish, Russians which are very helpful.
If I was a new immigrant, I'd probably go for New York or California... welfare packages are the best in the country
I don't think if I was emigrating I would chose the US as my destination. However if I was to move there (the situation under which this arises escapes me). I would probably choose Chicago. I do not know if it the best place to emigrate to but I have extended family there with whom I am on fairly good terms.
I would not recommend US to immigrate at all. But if you really want to, I would definitely not recommend New York city or Californian big cities, like SF o LA. Don't look at the high salaries, they will take a lot from it with taxes, like 1/3, plus cost of living is very high there. Pace of life is very high there as well, you will get constantly upset with traffic, parking, you car can be towed or something, people drive rude and don't notice each other at all. Bad schools or you have to pay a lot for a good school. Why do you need this kind of life? The good thing about big US city is that you can find a Russian community or all kinds of communities. The good thing about California is a good mild climate, no hurricanes, no tornado, no snow(expect the mountains). I would choose North Carolina, Triangle area. There is nothing bad, like what I specified above. But it has a poor Russian community and they are mostly very snobbish. It's also pretty boring place. No so much is going on here. I lived there for a few months. I guess I would tolerate that in exchange of all negative things I have in California. I also find American people nicer in Triangle then in California. In California there are a lot of snobbish people, especially women. After living in different states I came to conclusion that Bay Area is worst for finding women. Their attitude sucks. They are femino-fascists here. No matter, Russian, American or any other women. This is why there are so many gays.

Last Thursday I sat out on the deck of the Crow's Nest, drank premium tequila, chased it with premium lager, and watched as Brown Pelicans and Humped Back Whales worked an Anchovy Baitball: http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/ci_19234964?source=most_viewed
Santa Cruz is my favorite place to go for all these reasons you stated, although, job market is no good(unless you want to drive for an hour one way to Silicon Valley) and is has expensive real estate.
Bigfoot "lives" in Humbolt county---as most of the "witnesses" are high on the organic products grown there where they see him.
