Interesting you mention the difference between the two calendars - I was just reading about that in Alexander Vasiliev's History of the Byzantine Empire. It's too bad that kids out here in the West aren't taught more about the history of the BE and neighboring peoples in school. What little I know about the history of the region I've had to learn entirely on my own.
