Biden just gave the enemy a moral boost by stating the US is low on artillery ammunition. This is the reason according to Biden the US is sending cluster bombs to Ukraine. First why is the president giving secrets away on national television and second why is the US low on munitions? Is the US incapable of keeping up with munitions production?

President Biden sat down for a recent interview in which he said the United States is low on 155 mm artillery ammunition rounds, sparking outrage and questions of competency from conservatives on social media.

During the interview, which aired Sunday morning, Biden defended his administration for sending cluster munitions to Ukraine as a “transition period” until more munitions are produced.

“This is a war relating to munitions. And they’re running out of that ammunition, and we’re low on it,” Biden told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria. “And so, what I finally did, I took the recommendation of the Defense Department to – not permanently – but to allow for this transition period while we get more 155 weapons, these shells, for the Ukrainians.”

Reactions on social media ranged from confused to outrage as conservative pundits and experts alike wondered why Biden was announcing the U.S. shortage during a nationally televised interview that would be seen by adversaries.

 

Firstly because the fact America and it's NATO Allies are running short of ammunition principally for one or two specific weapon systems i.e. 155mmm artillery shells and HIMARs has been a matter of public debate for a considerable time now. It's literally a matter of record that the rate at which artillery rounds are being expended in this war has caught military planners on both sides short, including those in the US. So Biden is only commenting on facts that are in the public domain already. In fact he's actually using the fact the US is running low on conventional artillery rounds to justify sending Ukraine cluster munitions - because that is the only 155 system the US still has stockpiles of!

Secondly the 'running short' does not imply about to run out. US military logicians as matter of record have a lower limit imposed upon them by US military planners below which they are not supposed to allow US ammunition stocks to fall. If or when the absolute bottom limit for those stocks is reached Ukraine is the one who runs out of ammunition, not the US.

Thirdly steps are already underway to ramp up the production of shells. Contracts have already been signed with US manufacturers of ordinance to increase production and this process is underway albeit it will take a year or so before the impact is noticed. All of which is also a matter of public record.

Fourthly while there has been a significant run down in the stockpile of a few specific system's i.e mostly US artillery 155mm shells and HIMARs the vast bulk of its weapons arsenal is still intact i.e. both the US Navy and Air Force have access to their full range of 'smart munitions', everything from submarine launched torpedoes and cruise missiles, to air to air missiles and air to ground attack systems. Apart from the systems named above, stockpiles of everything else are in 'the the green', including tank munitions . This is because, with a few limited exceptions Ukraine doesn't have systems capable of utilizing them without heavy modification and for this reason hasn't been provided with many.

Lastly, because a temporary shortage of artillery ammunition does not directly impact US military capabilities in the near future unless the US anticipates fighting a major ground war in some other part of the world in the next year or two. And a war in Asia (no names mentioned) would be fought in the air and on the and below the sea long before it came to major land engagements.

Conclusion? 'Conservative pundits' should either come up with useful suggestions and strategies (including co-operating withe current Administration to fix the problem) or else just 'man up' and and admit they outright don't care if Russia wins this war and Ukraine is thrown to the wolves.

The OP's intent was to point out the President of the United States goes on national TV and tells the world the US is running out of a mainstay artillery ammunition giving the enemy a boost of confidence. That is classified information.

 

Biden giving away classified information while an ongoing war is taking place and yet the left has no problem going after Trump because he stored classified documents at his estate. More hypocrisy from the left.

 

Biden did not say that the US have run out of 155mm artillery and perhaps you could show where that the information is classified? The reserve large ammo the US have is probably more than the rest of the world combined. The US do not fight on the ground anyway

 

Release of military information like that would have gotten some president impeached, a special counsel, and thrown in jail.
Remember, another president is being dinged for waving a news article in an audio.

 

Biden is a Democrat; right? Then it's OK. Let's see what Democrat voters post within this thread. Will it be outrage or support of their fellow Democrat? Will they attack the thread creator or denounce the POTUS?

 

Maybe as far as you are concerned but this subject has been a regular talking point in the media and on internet forums for months now. The fact Ukraine has been burning through a prodigious amount of artillery shells and that the US and it's allies haven't been able to keep up with that usage rate has to be the worst kept 'military secret' since 'hey the Japanese just bombed Pearl Harbor'!

I'm still trying to figure out how saying something is "low" is giving away classified information. Low is a relative term. If he had given away raw numbers or percentages, then I might agree he stepped over a line.

We could be down 1 shell from the desired DOD number, and we are techically low.

Even if it was … MAGA has been telling us for YEARS ( at least since trump blurted classified information to Lavrov in a WH private meeting) that the President has an absolute right to declassify anything.

 

You can play dumb all you want, there's a reason why you don't tell the enemy your running low on something. Yes, we report production and other things if you believe the numbers. No, you don't hear wartime leaders saying you're running out of a particular weapon for f'ing obvious reasons. This I assure you, Zelinski didn't like hearing this and hated Putin hearing it, but keep that nose up that Biden butt, it's not the end of the world.

 

As president, he has the authority to do this. Whether it was smart to tell the whole world is another matter.
