Catholic Priest to Gay Couple: Get Divorced & You Can Have Communion
    http://www.bilerico.com/2014/09/catholic_priest_to_gay_couple_get_divorced_you_can.php

    ------------------------------------------------------------------
Two men who were married to each other and Catholic were told by a young new priest that they had to get a D-I-V-O-R-C-E in order to receive Holy Communion. For the Catholic Church that is so against divorce to suddenly make an exception because of a same-sex couple is sheer hypocrisy. That is the greatest over-reach of that particular denomination. It has even caused an uproar in that parish and many have left due to the priest's decision and the backing of the bishop there.

In light of the fact that even the pope has taken a more liberal approach to Gays in the church this priest comes along and tries to break up a perfectly good and loving relationship between two very distinguished people in their community who are in love. Isn't that something. Is it any wonder why people are leaving by the droves from the Catholic Church that still maintains such draconian attitudes and beliefs that literally can only serve to push otherwise good people out of the church not to return. Best thing in this case is for the two men to seek a more loving and accepting church such as can be found in the Christian Protestant denominations. But one just has to wonder how the church feels overriding God as far as telling people that they cannot receive Holy Communion when it is God who leads them to receive it in the first place.

What do you think of the following?

"Pastafarians demand that gay unicorns renounce leprechaun worship in favour of honouring the tooth fairy, who led them to receive blessings from Odin in the first place"

I should think the Catlick church wouldn't recognise such a marriage in the first place, making a divorce entirely unnecessary since, in the church's eyes, there is no marriage to be dissolved.

They didn't mary in the Church, so right then and there, the marriage isn't valid. As such, the church probably wants them to have an annulment, not a divorce.

Not if it's a known fact. They shouldn't take Communion, but then again, neither should the married gay couple.

How can they do that? I understand that divorce is forbidden in the Catholic Church?

Unless it was done in a Christian church, the marriage is just viewed as invalid, with no need for an annullment. The same applies to a heterosexual justice of the peace wedding. If a Catholic gets married in a JOP wedding, and then divorces, then remarries, the Church doesn't require an anullment for the second wedding to be a Catholic wedding. If the first marriage was one by a Christian church, then an anullment before a Catholic wedding is required.

That said, staying publically married in a same sex marriage and acting as if married, is pretty much poking the eye of the Church's rules. The divorce is needed if these guys want to be practicing Catholics.

Divorce isn't forbidden. It's remarriage after divorce that's forbidden. ALso, since this marriage isn't recognized by the church, the requirement for the divorce for the same sex marriage would be for appearance's sake. I

They shouldn't. They certainly can if they nobody knows about his sins. Nobody will try to stop him if no one else knows.

Getting a divorce does not mean their relationship would have to end. They can always become Catholic Lites i.e. Episcopalian I suppose.Just because they have a piece of paper on the wall does not mean that people who wouldn't accept them are suddenly going to say, "Well now, in that case..."

Beyond that, last I heard, the Catholic Church still considers homosexuality a mortal sin and before receiving the Eucharist one must confess and repent their sin, so, to borrow a sports phrase, "Ineligible players down field. Repeat third down."

It isn't a perfectly good and loving relationship, it is a perversion and abomination, according to God. Either the gays will have to change or God does. Very few Christians numerically worldwide buy into this nonsense of gay is OK, the ones that do are dying.

To me the answer is simple... that religion is the construct of man and that man sets the rules... not God.

Really, one Christian's opinion here, many times life would be much easier without the rules, that pesky stuff about forgiveness, the Golden Rule, etc. Rather than being man-made, I would describe the Bible as an account of a rejected God who wouldn't go away.

And that's why the number of their parishioners continue to go down and Down, and DOWN.

    - - - Updated - - -

That is blatantly obvious in the Catholic Church and why their numbers continue to dwindle.

Us skeptics follow many of the same rules as Christians except we do not need the threat of hell to entice us into doing the right thing. You against rape? Me too. I never needed a God to tell me that as it was immoral as its just self evident to me.

Forgiveness is awesome and a requisite for a happy life... Christians have no monopoly on forgiveness.

The Golden Rule is flawed as it assumes that humanity is one dimensional in that it assumes that all others want to be treated as I do... which is just factually incorrect. Again Christians have no monopoly on the Golden Rule as iterations of it predate Christianity.

I personally practice the negative of the Golden Rule, that being: If I would find a thing harmful to me then I should not do that thing to another.

Who wrote the Bible... God or man?

This story is a lie because in the eyes of the Church those men are not married anyway, so how can a priest tell people who are not married to get a divorce? This whole story is fabricated.

Men, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It would have to be quite a coincidence for dozens of authors from many cultures writing over thousands of years to write such a coherent, not to mention prophetic, book.

"In argumentation theory, an argumentum ad populum (Latin for "appeal to the people") is a fallacious argument that concludes a proposition is true because many or most people believe it. In other words, the basic idea of the argument is: "If many believe so, it is so."

There is no doubt Christianity is in decline in the dying West, but it is growing tremendously in many other areas of the globe. It is estimated Christianity will grow 50% from 2000 to 2050. Note I am not using the above false argument, just stating a fact.

    Not really. From Tim Chaffrey:

The Bible is unlike any other religious book. Despite forty authors writing from three continents over nearly two thousand years, it maintains a perfect consistency of message. Its words point unerringly to Christ, whose work on the cross was ordained by God—the true author of the Bible—before the world began.

Among all the books ever written, the Bible is absolutely unique. Actually, it is not just a book—it’s 66 books. And one of its most remarkable qualities is the complete unity of the overall message despite having so many different authors writing over many centuries on hundreds of controversial subjects. Natural explanations fail to account for the supernatural character and origin of Scripture.

The Bible was written over a period of roughly 2,000 years by 40 different authors from three continents, who wrote in three different languages. These facts alone make the Bible one of a kind, but there are many more amazing details that defy natural explanation.

Shepherds, kings, scholars, fishermen, prophets, a military general, a cupbearer, and a priest all penned portions of Scripture. They had different immediate purposes for writing, whether recording history, giving spiritual and moral instruction, or pronouncing judgment. They composed their works from palaces, prisons, the wilderness, and places of exile while writing history, laws, poetry, prophecy, and proverbs. In the process they laid bare their personal emotions, expressing anger, frustration, joy, and love.

Yet despite this marvelous array of topics and goals, the Bible displays a flawless internal consistency. It never contradicts itself or its common theme.

From Genesis to Revelation, we see man’s repeated rebellion against his holy Creator. God made a perfect world, but mankind has continually rejected His authority and sought to decide truth for himself. Nevertheless, God promised to extend His love, grace, and mercy to unworthy people who deserved to be cast into the lake of fire for all eternity.

Early in Genesis after Adam and Eve sinned, God made known His plan of redemption, which He repeatedly promised and expanded upon throughout the Old Testament. The promises were fulfilled in a surprising but predicted way: by the Savior’s sacrificial death and subsequent resurrection, as recorded in the New Testament. The Bible then announced the future culmination of the Savior’s redemptive work in Revelation.

Both the Bible and history weave together in seamless harmony, as though the Creator ordained this plan and recorded it in Scripture even before it unfolded in history. And that’s exactly what the Bible claims took place! God says that He alone can declare the future (Isaiah 42:9), and hundreds of His prophetic predictions have been fulfilled with absolute precision, while others await fulfillment.

The unity of Scripture demonstrates its supernatural inspiration. Only the one true, holy God could provide us with such a flawless Bible that reveals such a matchless message: the Lord’s staggering love for His creation.
